Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted October 8, 2023 Posted October 8, 2023 The Moreno trade where just doing what the rays would have done and trading Jansen would have made way more sense. Just imagine how different things would have been had we signed one of Nimmo or Bellinger. Probably no KK or Varsho. Gurriel would have stayed. Lineup would have been completely different. Sigh

L54 Old-Timey Member Posted October 8, 2023 Posted October 8, 2023 Yup. Like… did he miss the entire 2021 postseason? The braves won because of those trades. 2015 Mets with Cespedes?? 2016 Cubs with Zobrist?? 2018 Redsox? Does Atkins even watch baseball? Tommy Pham was pretty much given away. He could’ve been our Steve Pearce
hanton Old-Timey Member Posted October 8, 2023 Posted October 8, 2023 Tommy Pham was pretty much given away. He could’ve been our Steve Pearce Pham doesn't get alot of love around here but I've always been a fan, too bad we didn't pick him up I think he would have helped
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted October 8, 2023 Posted October 8, 2023 Good thing Ross traded the best young catcher in the game plus a contract year in Gurriel for Bradley Zimmer on roids. Ross is just too f***ing savvy for us common folk.

The braves won because of those trades. 2015 Mets with Cespedes?? 2016 Cubs with Zobrist?? 2018 Redsox? Does Atkins even watch baseball? I don't accept Atkins has no culpability for this year because 2 overweight guys and an aging Springer under performed projections. He chose not to add lumber at the deadline. This was a key window year for us and who knows who was really available behind the scenes, maybe at a premium. We'll never know. Who actually moved is not conclusive on who could have moved. Watched Pham get 4 hits last night. Pieces. In 2021 ATL added Soler who had 48 HRs and a 136 wRC+ in '19 and Pederson who is a 130 career wRC+ bat vs RHP. Rosario. Good pieces with experience/track record that were not that expensive who got hot/lucky at the right times. But you don't win without making those moves. The other examples you mention are indicative of just about every post season. Steve Pearce stands out.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted October 8, 2023 Posted October 8, 2023 Why did the Phillies start Ranger Suarez in game 1? Who'd you have started, Sanchez or Walker? I was thinking it'd be Sanchez, worked out for them.
BTS Community Moderator Posted October 8, 2023 Posted October 8, 2023 Who'd you have started, Sanchez or Walker? I was thinking it'd be Sanchez, worked out for them. I was thinking Wheeler was on 4 days rest, but I guess it was just 3. Suarez makes sense now.
deanmike Verified Member Posted October 8, 2023 Posted October 8, 2023 As an anti-3 fatties guy, I always wanted Kirk to be the catcher moved last offseason. I remember looking at that embarrassing poll this board had up seeing ******** arguments saying Jansen or Moreno should be gone. They always should have sold high on the fatty. I'm still a pro-Varsho guy and like that we have him, but I never wanted to lose Moreno. I would have preferred getting the best OF available for Kirk as opposed to losing Moreno to get Varsho. Anyone who tries to argue that Kirk would have returned more than Varsho, stop right there. The BTV value rankings at the time of the trade are seared into my memory. It was 1) Moreno, 2) Kirk, with a huge gap between Kirk and 3) Jansen. If we were trading Kirk to the DBacks it would have been for one of their lesser OFs like Alek Thomas or Jake McCarthy and probably another asset from their end instead of just Varsho.

I don't think the DBacks liked Kirk From the actual trade you can assume the DBacks were offering Thomas for MORENO and Toronto had to add a kicker to get Varsho
Dagagad Verified Member Posted October 8, 2023 Posted October 8, 2023 I don't think the DBacks liked Kirk From the actual trade you can assume the DBacks were offering Thomas for MORENO and Toronto had to add a kicker to get Varsho I think the thought process of which catcher gets more is flawed if that is how the FO approached it. Moreno obviously has a ceiling (and to me it was obvious at the time) that could effect a teams window. A long term under control elite catching prospect is a prize. If the front office went into it thinking who is available that fits what we need, and will they take one of our catchers.. that’s already a weak bargaining position. I think they overrate control except the one time it absolutely really matters. I’m not even saying that Varsho is a bad player. He’s obviously very valuable but Moreno isn’t the kind of chip you use there. It also violated just the rule of common sense that trading for a guy right after a big breakout season for a top prospect who just had a little shine taken off by his first exposure to the bigs….might end up backfiring.
Laika Community Moderator Posted October 8, 2023 Posted October 8, 2023 I get it But the trade definitely looks worse in hindsight because at the time Kirk looked a lot better. Kirk's combination of hitting skills (elite elite contact with decent power) with plus framing and blocking just looked so so good. He looks worse now because the power cratered. Like, if Kirk still looked like a sneaky star the trade does not feel as rough.
hanton Old-Timey Member Posted October 8, 2023 Posted October 8, 2023 Strider getting heated, wanting to go back out there. And Charlie Morton looking on
Omar Old-Timey Member Posted October 8, 2023 Posted October 8, 2023 Does Grayson Rodriguez get lit up by the Rangers today? Baltimore could be in a world of hurt going into game three vs Eovaldi in Arlington.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted October 8, 2023 Posted October 8, 2023 Lol of course its Aaron Hicks
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted October 8, 2023 Posted October 8, 2023 Texas rallies back in the 2nd to make it 4-2 This might be a long one

Anyone passionate about the playoffs would’ve been pissed. “Teammate” my ass. Passionate players want to help their team win

What are you on about??

Just saying he gave up the ball pretty easy. It’s in contrast to a lot of these other pitchers we’ve seen these last couple years when their managers go to pull them. In much less controversial situations mind you.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted October 8, 2023 Posted October 8, 2023 Especially if it’s true that it was not predetermined, like many assumed

connorp Old-Timey Member Posted October 8, 2023 Posted October 8, 2023 Like try to take that ball from Manoah if he’s good. But that same confidence goes sour fast when you suck. I was rooting for fatty until he bitched out like this
