Key22 Verified Member Posted July 29, 2024 Posted July 29, 2024 There are things the GM can control, injuries are not one of them. The reality is that the free agent market SUCKED. There was exactly one difference making bat, Ohtani. We tried but pretty much anyone would rather play forbthe Dodgers. A consistently winning team with the deepest pockets in baseball. Every other bat, aside from Teo, was meh. The Jays had some players you were not expecting to be this terrible to start the year. Ross also hit a little but too. Yariel looks pretty good, IKF was solid where no one saw that. The farm looks worse because everyone got promoted or hurt. KK and Turner were meh but meh was the free agent market.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2024 Posted July 29, 2024 I mean Tiedemann Manoah Barriera Maroudis Romano Bo's calfs Votto's ankles Springer for 3 years Orelvis being stupid Andres Arias At some point they have to be doing something wrong lmao On the other hand, the starting rotation has been remarkably healthy for the 2nd year in a row. Other than Manoah of course
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2024 Posted July 29, 2024 Even being an elite bat this year he's likely going to be a 3.5 win player because everything else is so bad which is a bit disappointing. He was a 6.3 win player in 21. Give me a break.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2024 Posted July 29, 2024 Always believed in him and even Springer while most ppl here were writing him off. Feel good about that one Hah... https://www.bluejaysmessageboard.com/search.php?searchid=4920195&pp= Didn't even bother checking Vlad, it'll be the same BS.
Sorrow Verified Member Posted July 29, 2024 Posted July 29, 2024 He was a 6.3 win player in 21. Give me a break. He was also a better defender and base runner in 2021. He’s f***ing garbage at both today. If the ball isn’t within 3’ of him he is quite literally the worst defender at 1B in baseball. I don’t think he ever gets near 6 wins again unless he somehow becomes an average defender or ends up at 3B and is somehow not the worst at that.

RIght now Juan Soto is on track to out-war Vlad 10-3, but their traditional stats may end up in the same ballpark. If Vlad ends up .300 30 100 with 3.5 WAR his arb award will probably be 35 million and contract demand the same as Soto's. But his fWAR 1/3 of Soto's.

Vlad has been playing at approximately a 5 win pace over the last 3 months since he heated up with the bat. I'll agree he's not likely to end up at 6 wins again but 5 seems eminently possible with a tad more consistency.

WTF are you talking about?

Soto's traditional stats are WAY ahead of Vlad - so are his advanced stats. They aren't in the same area code this year, which is reflective in their wRC+, WAR, etc.
Funky Verified Member Posted July 29, 2024 Posted July 29, 2024 Would love to see Soto hitting behind Vladdy for the next 10 years. No matter how stingy defense is, pitchers still will get hit off of and if we can’t score runs we are not winning Don’t care about their defence. Having elite defensive gems like Varsho help take the sting out of Soto’s defence. Move Vladdy to 3rd and get an elite defense SS to help. Bring in a slugging 1B or DH to make a murderers row like we used to have.
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2024 Posted July 29, 2024 (edited) I think there is a possibility the Jays could win one or both of the double header today. The Jays just saw Eflin and Povich is an emergency start up from AAA who got hammered last time by the Jays. Having said that, I don't think any lead is safe with our pen. They might be able to pull off game 1 if Green is still available., but by game 2 with O's last ABs, be a stretch for our pen to save two game on the road. Edited July 29, 2024 by Carlos Danger

Soto went 8/17/23/31, Vlad so far 7/15/20. 35 isn't a stretch at all depending where he ends up. If he ends up .310 30 100 I could see him asking for that. OK. Maybe it is a stretch but not much of one. He'll ask for 30 I bet. If his numbers look flashy maybe a bit more.

Lol imagine if they do all the fanfare like they did for Romano and Yimi *Jays up 3-2 entering the top of the 9th *the lights go dark *AC/DC starts blaring through the loud speakers, lights start flashing blue *Zach Pop jogs in from the dugout *promptly gives up a walk, 2 doubles and a bomb and the Jays are now down 3 as Schneider calls for a pitching change

If you pro-rate Soto 2020 his fWAR 2020-22 was 7.5/6.8/3.5 = 18 Vlad's 21-23 was 6, 3, 1 = 10 so he's at about 55-60% of Soto's fWAR but 85% of arb Salary. Even if he has a great 2025 that ratio will probably stay just about 50%. Soto is going to go about 10 fWAR with a .300 40 100 season, and Vlad would be about 5 fWAR with that season (if walks/defense/baserunnign are at his current level) So can easilly see Vlad hitting free agency with "the same" avg/hr/rbi stats but half as much fWAR. Will be interesting.

Today could be a massive drain on the pen as Francis has generally been rocked as a starter and Rodriguez hasn't typically been given very large pitch counts.

You said "RIght now Juan Soto is on track to out-war Vlad 10-3, but their traditional stats may end up in the same ballpark." Given the WAR values, I assumed you meant for this season...in which case, Vlad's traditional stats aren't very close to Soto's.

It's all really irrelevant. Outside of Green - the arms in the pen are all disposable.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2024 Posted July 29, 2024 It's all really irrelevant. Outside of Green - the arms in the pen are all disposable. Some of these guys will still be needed next season if the club actually intends to take a shot at competing. It's already a tall order to build back a decent leverage bullpen, and if all of the potential middle relievers are also destroyed that leaves almost no building blocks at all.

If we're relying on Pop, Little, Burr, Cabrera, etc. to play key roles in our pen next year, we aren't competing. Personally, I don't think competing in 2025 is going to be feasible either way.
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2024 Posted July 29, 2024 Probably going to be some crooked number in todays double header. Rodriguez at 38 pitches in the 1st, 3 nothing, bases loaded.
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2024 Posted July 29, 2024 OMG- Rodriguez just hit McCann in the face with bases loaded.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2024 Posted July 29, 2024 OMG- Rodriguez just hit McCann in the face with bases loaded. Fortunately it looks like it just got his nose and brim of the hat. Clearly unintentional, but this has to be the end for Rodriguez.
The_DH Verified Member Posted July 29, 2024 Posted July 29, 2024 Looks like it's just a sauna down on the field so you just can't get a proper grip/release on the ball.

Clearly unintentional, but this has to be the end for Rodriguez. I wonder if we shutdown Y-Rod soon anyway. 60+ innings on the season now after throwing 0 last year. Maybe he has a couple more starts in him? Good day for Clement and another utility guy or 2 to give us some innings.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2024 Posted July 29, 2024 Turner removed from the game... traded?
Rimar Verified Member Posted July 29, 2024 Posted July 29, 2024 Yes traded to Mariners for irrelevant returns, like all the previous trades the duo Shitkins did and will do this month before trade deadline end.
Rimar Verified Member Posted July 29, 2024 Posted July 29, 2024 We need to first get rid of Shapiro, Atkins, Schneider and pitching staff. And then be patient and do what Orioles did, and draft early in the drafts for the next 3 years. We should trade Vlad, Bichette and pitchers for the best prospects clubs have.
Rimar Verified Member Posted July 29, 2024 Posted July 29, 2024 Ah and don't waste money on free agency. Better keep that money for when we will have great young players on rosters and for international drafts
