BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted May 10, 2024 Posted May 10, 2024 Kooch and Jano costing us $17.2M AAV in 2024. Kooch has a 2.33 FIP and 1.4 WAR in '24. Making the big assumption he and Jano continue to perform, what do they cost us or their next team (s)? Jano is scorching hot over performing and will come back down to earth. 200 wRC+ Kooch is a Boras client so we aren't getting any adopted new home town discount because of Pete Walker, or any of that nonsense the media likes to talk about. $28-30M AAV minimum 3 year term combined?

Between the two, Jansen seems more signable assuming he's open to staying, but it probably won't be cheap if he stays reasonably healthy this season. He really should have been extended already. Tough to say with Kikucki. He has a very middling track record prior to 2023 and will be entering his age 34 season next year. Snell won the Cy Young and had the same agent, and had trouble in free agency. Really depends on the market, I guess.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted May 10, 2024 Posted May 10, 2024 I agree with both of you on ^. There was a paradigm shift in the FA market valuations last off season. Makes it more of a crap shoot. I was just noodling it around in my head this am. But until we gets some “actuals” in the current market everyone is just guessing out their ars.

Kikuchi went through a lot of anguish in Seattle and in his first year in Toronto. Since the start of 2023 he has probably felt the best and happiest he ever has, as an MLB pitcher. Have to think he would take SOME sort of hometown discount. He is also 33 in two months so a big contract is probably not on the table for him, especially with his track record being spotty. The comps from last year would be Sonny Gray and Seth Lugo, I think. Two 34 year olds coming off of good years wire to wire, and projecting decetly. 3/$75M for Sonny Gray 3/$45M for Lugo In both instances the signing team was aggressive. Stroman last year is sort of a comp but he had such a brutal second half in 2023.

wilko Old-Timey Member Posted May 10, 2024 Posted May 10, 2024 What's everyone's thoughts on oft injured Jansen? Should they resign him? How much do you think he could/should get?
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted May 10, 2024 Posted May 10, 2024 Wish they would’ve extended him like two seasons ago

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted May 10, 2024 Posted May 10, 2024 What's everyone's thoughts on oft injured Jansen? Should they resign him? How much do you think he could/should get? It's a good question. He'll be 30 next year with a lengthy history of injuries. Catchers often die in their early 30's, so there's a lot of risk involved. I mean if he'd sign a 2-3 year deal with a reasonable AAV ($12M +/-), then sure. But I certainly don't want him for 4-6 year deal. This team is headed into a rebuild, so I'm not sure he'd want to sign here anyway. If he's healthy and playing great this year, you probably trade him while you can. And I love Jano...
mphenhef Verified Member Posted May 10, 2024 Posted May 10, 2024 I wonder what the market for Jano would be. A lot of the contenders are already set with young guys they like or options they would likely stick with over Jano. Taking a quick look I see Giants (maybe but hard to see them picking Jano over Bailey) Rays (But Jano doesn't strike me as the player they would spend on) Tigers, Reds, Padres Cubs (I could definitely see them making a play for him)

glory Old-Timey Member Posted May 10, 2024 Posted May 10, 2024 It depends on what kind of year Jansen has. If it's another good offensive season with 250 PA because he couldn't stay healthy, then he'll definitely have suitors but it won't be a huge bidding war. If he finally gets 450-500 PA and hits like he has since 2021, then I'd imagine it would be a reasonably high AAV with a 3-4 year term. Hard to say. His injury history definitely complicates things. The Jays really should have extended him after Moreno was traded.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted May 10, 2024 Posted May 10, 2024 I really don’t think Danny Jansen will be overly expensive to sign. I can see them getting him done for like 2 years and 25 million or something along those lines. No team is giving him 3 or 4+ years with his injury history.

I feel like more would be on the table. 2/$24M was the Mitch Garver deal this offseason and he was also a C who never put up playing time, and looked more like a 33 year old DH. Maybe same AAV with couple more years though? There are not really any comps I can find in the last 5 years in free agency.

I can see them getting him done for like 2 years and 25 million or something along those lines. No team is giving him 3 or 4+ years with his injury history. Over the past few years we've seen Christian Vasquez and Yan Gomes get 3 year deals and James McCann get a 4 year deal. Perhaps those guys had proven to be more durable, but they also aren't anywhere near the caliber of player that Jansen is. I could probably see Jansen sign a 2 year extension in TO simply because he loves it here and if the team was a contender, but we're not. He's should get a minimum of 3 years on the FA market - probably 4 unless there's some bizarre FA market.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted May 10, 2024 Posted May 10, 2024 To the position that Jansen should have been signed a few years ago, I agree. I was pushing for it. But by the same token, last year or two years ago, Bo would have been at the top of the list for an extension, not Jano. We haven't seen much in the way of extensions by this FO (Berrios, Grichuk, is that it?) which makes you wonder about the philosophy i.e., is it fine/less risk to let the player go to FA and compete for their services then along with all other FA that are available?
MikeM3 Verified Member Posted May 10, 2024 Posted May 10, 2024 How well did Boras do this past offseason? Well Montgomery still got 25 million. I think Kooch gets that.

I can see them getting him done for like 2 years and 25 million or something along those lines. No team is giving him 3 or 4+ years with his injury history. Most of Danny's injuries have come from breaks from being hit by pitches. I don't think that's going to scare off a lot teams. He hasn't had a lot of soft tissue injuries, ligament injuries. He's had the 2nd best wRC+ of all catchers in the league since 2022. He's fast for a catcher and he's very solid defensively. I think you're selling him short. I think he deserves and will get a lot more than 2 and 25.
