Have you heard of something called "balance?" It's possible to put together both a formidable offense and defensive team on the field rather than ignoring one area.

 

Can't you recognize that's exactly what they tried to do? Give up some offense to improve the defense? We still have a hit first SS on the team - whom most of you complain about every single game because he defense is s***. Most of you complain you don't want Vlad playing 1st base because he defense is s***. Everyone complained about Teo in RF, most complained about Springer in CF and his declining defense. Most people though Gurriel was a joke defensively in LF. But right now you'd jizz your pants if we had Gurriel in LF and Teo in RF.

 

We had lots of offense first players during the Atkins era and it never took us anywhere. We still have some and people can't shut up about how bad their defense is. Bo Bichette should be the #1 fan favorite on this board right now. The guy rakes in his sleep. But most people on here seemingly don't like him because his DEF value is between 1 and 3 every year.

 

Some of you are just miserable people. Explains why you're on a message board so much - nobody would want to be around you.

Am I supposed to be happy that they missed out on all the big free agents? When half of them signed for well below market value?

 

I'm not even sure adding Ohtani would have been enough to fix this offense. Bo and Ohtani can't carry a team that's rolling out the ghost of George Springer, overrated Vlad and the cast of useless ****s like Varsho, Kirk, Biggio, IKF, KK, etc. There's a STRONG possibility that we'd still be 3-4 and have been no-hit and 1-hit and the sky would be falling if we signed Ohtani - AND we'd be stuck with that massive contract with a team headed nowhere. Thank god Atkins foresaw this disaster and aborted the mission.

All they did was trade Teo and LGJ for defense and pitching, that's it. Unfortunately nobody saw Vladdy, Springer, Kirk all forgetting how to hit a f***ing baseball at the exact same time that they removed Teo and LGJ.

 

If those bats don't fall off a cliff the Jays are pushing 95-100 wins last season.

 

So they tried to bring in the biggest, and only real free agent bat available. When that predictably didn't work they shored up the defense and are now hoping for a bounce back from those same bats because, going back to my original point......there WERE NO PROVEN SURE THING DIFFERENCE MAKING BATS LEFT ON THE FA MARKET after Ohtani.

 

If this doesn't work they are probably going to have to retool/rebuild this offense going forward, and that should be easier to do without a bunch of s*** bag albatross contracts on the books like the one they would have to have given Bellinger to "land" him.

Punting even league average 3b was completely unacceptable for a team that just went into the playoffs limping on offense, and not bounced for the same reason. Most GMs react by improving the roster how they failed there. Jays absolutely doubled down.

I mostly get where you're coming from.

 

My wife is an import. Granted I didn't look for here in advertising mediums, but it wasn't even that long ago that advertising for brides was commonplace in Canada and the US. There was entire magazines that showed off young single women from eastern europe, russia etc who were all ready to pick up and move to the prairies to marry some single farmer and it wasn't considered crazy or weird.

If someone takes the position that Toronto NEEDED to put Varsho in CF and bring in a LF that can hit, these are the actual options:

 

- Pay 3/$45 for Gurriel/Soler or 1/$25 for Teoscar

- Pay $5M for Pham or Renfroe or someone like that and have a player who could be replacement level in LF. Would need to sign a backup CF too in this scenario.

- Stick Schneider in LF and role the dice on him. Would also have to sign a 4th OF who can handle CF in this case, not sure who that would be

- Trade for a LF. And sign a backup CF.
