Manoah has Ricky Romero 2013 vibes. Was a pretty good SP, had a fantastic season by ERA which the underlying numbers suggested more number 3 than number 1 type. Had a dreadful year after, then came into camp as the "number 5" and proceeded to suck/be injured.

Sometimes pitchers just become ineffective... its the nature of the beast.

What do you mean? He's came to camp in much better shape, according to data his stuff was good, the command was horrawful, hopefully he can figure it out, there's time. 1.2 innings doesn't tell the tale.

Thank you for rejecting that trade in the DDL haha.

mechanics are still very clearly out of whack. THe command was nowhere near this bad even in his "results beating peripherals" year

1st start of spring so not ready to throw out Baby Huey with the bathwater but... as a continuation of last season its certainly worrisome. I'm just surprised all the weight loss didn't instantly fix all of his problems.

At least Romero had the excuse of chronic knee injuries/pain.

Could be with the body changes and such that he hasn't yet adjusted to the changes. I'm hoping.

he should put the weight back on, looks a little too slim ;)

After the Tyler Ward incident last season and now 3 batters hit by pitch in less than 2 innings, it's getting to the point where the guy needs to find a new career.

his career is on the line, people need to realize Manoah and Jays started ramping up for yesterdays start - at least weeks ago if not months; it's not like he's Gausman just getting in some reps. Phyiscally he looks great and I'm sure he feels good. Guessing here but maybe they have him back off a little in his next start - instead of trying to air it out; see if that helps his control.

You think he looks great? He looks like a fat man that starved himself for a few months to me. Love handles, bitch tits, and no muscle mass.

ST results should be taken with a grain of salt. These guys don't care, they are working on specific things. If in a few weeks Manoah is still ineffective, then it's a concern.

George Kirby got knocked around yesterday too. I doubt the Mariners give a flying f***.

While I agree that you need to take ST results with a grain of salt, you can't compare Kirby to Manoah. Kirby is an established stud, coming off a great season. Manoah is trying to resurrect his career. Manoah's STing results matter more IMO.

LATEST NEWS

Feb. 28: LHP Ricky Tiedemann (left hamstring/calf inflammation) playing catch

This isn’t believed to be a serious issue for the Blue Jays’ No. 1 prospect, but Tiedemann continues to play catch to keep his arm moving, and the Blue Jays should have a clearer plan in the coming days. As long as Tiedemann doesn’t need much longer to ramp up, this should not impact his readiness for the season. The organization is eager to see what their top young arm is capable of after he packed on muscle and drew rave reviews (and crowds) after his early bullpen sessions.

Feb. 28: UTIL Cavan Biggio (left shoulder tendinitis) getting closer to game action

Biggio has been hitting off the machine at high velocity, which is an encouraging sign. This issue still isn’t considered to be major by any means, so as long as Biggio is able to continue ramping up at this pace, this shouldn’t get in the way of his readiness for the season.

Rogers mouthpieces are starting to ramp up the narrative that Bowden Francis maybe earning a rotation spot out of camp, is one of the sneaky storylines of spring.

Interesting timing, because all I was seeing from the Rogers mouthpieces up until after Manoah's first spring start was it's still Manoah's job to lose. I swear one of the mouthpieces even threw out some crazy hyperbole like "Mitch White would have to allow only 1 run in spring to take Manoah's rotation spot"

The mouthpieces also seem to have finally realized Clement is out of options, so they are finally starting to respect him as a possible 26-man guy to start the season.

I think if the Jays don't end up needing to move Espinal's 2.7M to clear AAV for another add, they might just option him to Buffalo to start the season and Clement takes his roster spot to avoid losing him for nothing. Unless of course, the pseudo-vet treatment for arb guys with options is a real thing.

He hit 3 batters. In 2 innings. In spring. That’s extremely alarming since it points to him having the same issues as last year.

Now lets see if 4 weeks of spring is enough time to work out the issues.

Its really early though. Not "extremely alarming" by any means. He's most likely working through some delivery adjustments.

not the same at all, one is fighting to save his career the other is just getting reps in; the two aren't the same

Maybe it's a good thing that Tiedemann wasn't traded for Soto after all. There aren't a lot of silver linings to the lousy spring debut but at least the velocity was up a bit compared to last spring's first start. The velo numbers are right in line with his numbers from the 2022 regular season. Of course none of that will matter if he doesn't get the command squared away.

2023 First Spring Start

Sinker Max 93.6 Ave 92.1

Slider Max 82.6 Ave 81.1

4 Seam Max 94.4 Ave 93.1

2024 First Spring Start

Sinker Max 94.4 Ave 93.1

Slider Max 83.4 Ave 81.5

4 Seam Max 95.5 Ave 93.7

2022 Regular Season

Sinker 93.3 Ave

Slider 81.5 Ave

4 Seam 93.9 Ave

Manoah should have come into this game ready to go, he's not a veteran just getting reps, this is it for him.

What do you mean? He's came to camp in much better shape, according to data his stuff was good, the command was horrawful, hopefully he can figure it out, there's time. 1.2 innings doesn't tell the tale.
