Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 2, 2023 Posted August 2, 2023 I dunno. I know his xwOBA this year is better than last year and his profile looks solid in most ways. Maybe it's bad luck, maybe it's the new home park dimensions. But offense aside he's still hitting bottom of the barrel talent projections when it comes to baserunning and defense. He is probably one of the stupidest baserunners in the game. He's just not a special talent and it seems obvious. The offense may still project well but it's highly subject to BABIP risk because of his swing tendencies. His peers are like... late career JD Martinez, Josh Bell, and Rowdy Tellez. I certainly agree about the baserunning and defense. Why can't he just be David Ortiz FFS. I can live with him being Big Papi.

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted August 2, 2023 Author Posted August 2, 2023 From the article itself: DeJong is in the final guaranteed year of his contract, though the Blue Jays will have the choice on his team options for 2024 at $12.5 million and 2025 at $15 million. There are $3 million in total buyouts for those two years, and it's common for teams to factor that into the cash they receive along with the player. The Cardinals are paying those and half of DeJong's remaining salary, per a source. So the Cardinals are paying half of what he is owed for the remainder of this year and then they are paying any buyouts should they arise. If the Jays want to exercise any of his options, the Jays will be responsible for paying the full amount on this options? That's how I read it.

That's what it sounds like, yes Hoping he plays well enough to justify the options but they're 12.5M so we'll see

The Jays are only covering half of his remaining salary for this Season. They will likely buyout his option and the Cardinals are covering that amount.

But now that it's a straight up 12.5 he's going to have to ball out these two months to make me want to do it.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted August 3, 2023 Posted August 3, 2023 That's what it sounds like, yes Hoping he plays well enough to justify the options but they're 12.5M so we'll see I don't think there's anything DeJong could do to justify picking up the option, which is fine as he's only a placeholder for Bichette for as long as he's out (hopefully not long).

Really he's just a massive upgrade on Espinal for the rest of the year
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted August 3, 2023 Posted August 3, 2023 Really he's just a massive upgrade on Espinal for the rest of the year He’s exactly what they wanted Espinal to be. But Espinal had grand ideas of turning himself into more of a power threat and ended up nerfing himself into the ground.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted August 3, 2023 Posted August 3, 2023 Really he's just a massive upgrade on Espinal for the rest of the year Definitely lots of things to figure out with the infield next year. Likely need to fill 2 spots (3B/2B) and that’s assuming Bichette will be 100% I totally think we’ll go after Anderson on a cheap 1 year deal. He can start at 2nd and backup SS much like Semien did. 3B may be a rotation of guys from Buffalo all year, Barger/Orelvis/Otto/Ernie/etc.

mphenhef Verified Member Posted August 3, 2023 Posted August 3, 2023 I miss waiver trades I think Jerry Dipoto does too (or perhaps doesn't realize they are gone) based on his lack of Teo trade.

Hicks gives them a potential late inning weapon out of the bullpen with high K upside. DeJong gives them a stopgap until Bo returns and an extra infielder/RHB with some pop. Wonder if DeJong hits well enough with the Jays, he becomes their 2B or 3B option for next season. Cabrera gives them another lefty with great stuff. The lineup could have used another big power bat but was going to be tough. The Jays are going to have to improve significantly from within. Vladdy has to be a monster power bat, Springer needs to hit better, Kirk needs to hit better and for more power, Chapman needs a hot final two months, Varsho needs to stop hitting like crap, and gotta hope one of their SPs like Bassitt, Ryu or Manoah can be a solid No. 3 guy in a Wildcard matchup. A lot of their core pieces have underperformed and you gotta hope they figure things out. On 8/2/2023 at 8:52 AM, jaysblue said: Yeah as much as I would have loved to seen a bat like Teo, at the end of the day he's isn't going to carry this lineup on his shoulders. The Jays need their core pieces to start contributing like Springer Vlad and Kirk. That will make the difference. And if the Jays could get any positive contribution from Varsho with the bat over the final two months, even better! On 8/2/2023 at 9:49 AM, Brownie19 said: I know what you're saying, but Teo certainly has the ability to put an entire team on his shoulders and carry them for a month. We all saw that multiple times over the past 3-4 years. I'd love to know what the price was to get Teo. There was no guarantee he'd come in here and get hot - but there was a chance - and when he gets hot, he gets really hot. I thought that was a chance worth taking (provided the asking price was reasonable). On 8/2/2023 at 10:03 AM, jaysblue said: Yeah he can get hot for an extended period for sure. But at the end of the day, the Jays need guys like Vlad, Springer, Kirk and Varsho to start becoming productive offensively. Not sure Teo could have saved this team all on his own. The only way this team gets to the next level is if those core players improve. I wonder the price for Teo as well. It would have looked weird trading back Teo to the Jays maybe from the Mariners perspective lol. So far Swanson/Teo has been a wash this season in terms of value. The plus is Swanson is under club control for two more seasons. I would be open to bringing back Teo as a FA in the offseason. He might look to sign a 1-year-contract to build up his value again. Hahaha... bumped into these nuggets. 😂🤪
