Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted July 7, 2023 Posted July 7, 2023 What do you figure it would cost…even assuming Chicago would move him…which I doubt…but just for kicks I would imagine both Orelvis Martinez and Ricky Tiedemann would have to be in the deal. They will probably want a young controlable OF to put in CF so likely Varsho. And than a few secondary pieces.

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted July 7, 2023 Posted July 7, 2023 Lmfao what That would be the only starting point the Jays have in that kind of trade. You think you're getting him for less lol?
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted July 7, 2023 Posted July 7, 2023 That would be the only starting point the Jays have in that kind of trade. You think you're getting him for less lol? The starting point is Tiedeman + Martinez + Varsho??
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted July 7, 2023 Posted July 7, 2023 The starting point is Tiedeman + Martinez + Varsho?? To be clear that is what I would believe the White Sox would ask for. I'm not suggesting we make that trade or want to do that trade. But he asked me what do I think it would take. It's going to command 2 top 5 prospects and and a player they can put in their lineup. Jays don't have any Outfield prospects to trade away. At least none with any significant value.
Laika Community Moderator Posted July 7, 2023 Posted July 7, 2023 It's just a jarring package Jays could get more bang for their buck by trading Tiedemann or Orelvis for other needs
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted July 7, 2023 Posted July 7, 2023 It's just a jarring package Jays could get more bang for their buck by trading Tiedemann or Orelvis for other needs Jarring is right. We just traded Moreno to get Varsho only to move him...and then to throw in Orelvis and Ricky. I get Jonn isnt saying we would go for it. So there isn't much point discussing it then. Varsho plus one of those two probably does it. Still not sure its worth it for us if Varsho can ever get back to 4 WAR player.

Actually a very good chance Varsho out-WARs Robert over the next 3.5 seasons (considering injury history too)

Yeah, I think the Jays could swing the trade without including both Tiedemann and Orelvis, but then again i think if they really wanted to go all in...get Giolito and Robert, give them whatever they ask for, get a couple relief arms somewhere and then let the chips fall where they may. In that sense he would basically be repeating AAs last season by further gutting the system, but would still have multiple years of window left rather than everyone being a rental.

Of course, I just find it boring to discuss whatever "tweak" trade they're going to end up doing...I'd rather discuss wild hypotheticals that could actually make impact, no matter how wild. Kinda like it's way more fun to talk about a hypothetical Ohtani trade rather than knowing Moreno is getting a comp pick and nothing more.

Agreed I think if they engaged the White Sox on that kind of deal it would be apart of a bigger deal especially involving our top prospects. Its all hypothetical. But if the White Sox were shopping Roberts for any reason they would be looking for a trade to really jump start the rebuild in a big way. I do think they will be very active on the trade market.

This current team isn't anywhere near the quality of that team. That 2015 squad was the best team in baseball.

Smaller trades for someone like Hunter Renfroe or say Lance Lynn will be their wheelhouse. Adding depth where needed

BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted July 7, 2023 Posted July 7, 2023 Not sure what Hunter brings. Aside from the hose, he adds little D value and hasn't exactly raked LHP. Useful piece I suppose depending on price.
Laika Community Moderator Posted July 7, 2023 Posted July 7, 2023 Not sure what Hunter brings. Aside from the hose, he adds little D value and hasn't exactly raked LHP. Useful piece I suppose depending on price. His career splits are all that matter. Single season L/R splits have no meaning. The current roster has two starters that are hopeless against lefties (Varsho and KK). Renfroe is probably a better option against LHP than Belt, as well. The only RHB to replace or pinch hit for those 2.5 options is the second catcher. Replacing Clement on the roster with Hunter Renfroe would be a big deal IMO.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted July 7, 2023 Posted July 7, 2023 Tommy Pham should be looked at as the Mets stink and he's having a very good season. Mostly red statcast page and he crushes LHP.

They probably inch closer to the last WC spot and decide to just stay the course.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted July 7, 2023 Posted July 7, 2023 Just for fun not that they would do it, I'd trade Swanson and his control years, and his 4 FIP and 0.3 WAR to SEA to rent Teo to DH and improve our chances vs LHP. Surely as a reliever Swanson is replaceable at the deadline or with Greene. He has been fine but he isn't an elite pen arm. Plus Schneids used and abused him lol.

wilko Old-Timey Member Posted July 7, 2023 Posted July 7, 2023 Ya Id rather look at him for sure than Renfroe. Someone will have to let the Jays know not to join a fantasy football team with him.

If you thought Stroman was bad… I dunno if it goes that far for Pham He's a bit weird, sure but he has also been well liked on past teams. When the Rays traded him their players rioted.

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted July 7, 2023 Posted July 7, 2023 Jays badly need a right handed hitting OF. Which is crazy because we apparently use to have to many. But Varsho can't play everyday agianst lefties anymore. That's gotta nipped in the butt. Like his OPS is not impressive in the first place but it takes an absolute nose dive against them. I'm confused they opt to use him in CF vs lefties instead of just Kiermiaer.

Merrifield and Springer would have been enough if Espinal had held on the the primary 2B job and Merrifield was used mostly in the OF Espinal's suckage early on was a problem

As good as KK has been offensively, his bat is going to regress closer to his norm, and Varsho’s greatest asset is his defense in CF as he may not (likely won’t) be able to hit well enough to justify a corner OF spot. Platooning both is certainly an option, but the offense around those two isn’t good enough to compensate for having two 90 wRC+ bats in the OF. Either Varsho has to have a monster 2nd half (which is possible) or they need to trade KK and add a LF who can hit.
