Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2023 Posted July 3, 2023 Ross had a window of opportunity to trade Kirk when his value was high after making the ASG. Spanky is now officially in full blown clown mode. He should have traded Vlad after 2021 and Manoah this past offseason too. What a f***ing idiot.

gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2023 Posted July 3, 2023 A lot of morons in here who never heard of selling high on a player. Sorry, I shouldn't have assumed.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2023 Posted July 3, 2023 A lot of morons in here who never heard of selling high on a player. Sorry, I shouldn't have assumed. Sure. But ya cant do it with everyone, nor do you have any idea if they tried to and there were no takers. So whining about a non move is stupid when you have 0 clue of anything behind the scenes. Stuff like this is just hindsight "they should have forseen everything that could possibly go wrong and make sure they took steps to prevent that at some arbitraty point in the past that would assuredly make things better for today"

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2023 Posted July 3, 2023 Yeah, I'm mainly pissed at losing Moreno. Based on the results to date, perhaps we sold high on Moreno...
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2023 Posted July 3, 2023 Based on the results to date, perhaps we sold high on Moreno... Elite defence never slumps, and behind the plate is a prime position. I know Varsho can play a decent CF but Moreno is elite behind the plate. Varsho is not elite in CF imo, he's above average. Offensively, I think I'd prefer Moreno's bat to ball skills vs Varsho's power advantage. Moreno's base running is nothing to frown on either.

Jesus - it was a joke (although it may end up being true). I believe Moreno is a poor framer (35th percentile), so I'm not sure he's currently elite defensively and his base running has been awful this year also FWIW. Maybe he finds some Viagra for that limp dick bat at some point, maybe not.

Its just that Kiermaier is beyond elite to the point of ridiculous.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2023 Posted July 3, 2023 Pisses me off framing is even a “skill”. A by product of human umpire error and clusterf***ery. Robo umps and/or a robo ump number of appeals per game should make that skill metric like the dodo. Can’t come soon enough. yup, though that makes a catcher's arm and pop times even more important, as does a pitcher's delivery motion when it comes to trying to stop the running game. Once robo umps start being a thing, and it is 100% coming, framing goes away and everything about catcher's defense will become about all the unmeasuables and their arms. If anything right now, the Jays and other ors should be drilling every single one of their pitchers to minimize their delivery times with runners on base, and making pop times and throwing the centre of everything as a catcher. Pitching deliveries probably being even more important.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted July 4, 2023 Posted July 4, 2023 I've never seen so many people heated over a Blue Jays trade like this before. Seriously, Moreno and Varsho get mentioned like everyday almost. Or things like "we should have traded Kirk instead."

Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted July 4, 2023 Posted July 4, 2023 Moreno isn't even that good of a blocker either, he's only at 1 Blocks Above Average on baseballsavant, 27th in the league. Ol' Kirky on the other hand continues to be a complete vacuum, 2nd in the league with 8 despite not even having as many opportunities as anyone around him. He's an excellent thrower, but that currently appears to be his only measurable plus-plus skill, which certainly isn't a bad one to have, but there's more to catcher defense than throwing out runners.

Running game is more controlled by the pitchers anyways. I wonder how front offices measure game calling abilities. I think for the Jays it feels like Jansen calls a better game, but i would have no idea how that is is quantified.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted July 4, 2023 Posted July 4, 2023 Source: trust me bro So I guess you would put Varsho defensively in the same category with KK or Pillar(prime)?
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted July 4, 2023 Posted July 4, 2023 So I guess you would put Varsho defensively in the same category with KK or Pillar(prime)? He's absolutely on par or better than Pillar prime. He's a tier below KK
Laika Community Moderator Posted July 4, 2023 Posted July 4, 2023 A lack of diving catches does not make Varsho any less impressive. His abilities in tracking balls, taking perfect routes, cutting off gappers, etc. are very impressive. Pillar was probably about as good during his defensive peak but he broke down a bit after 2016 and was just good from then on. No longer great.
