I have a serious question coming from someone who is more of a casual baseball fan, only watches Bluejays, but do catch most of the games. I know there is ups an downs in a baseball season even for the best teams. But do the legit playoff and world series contenders have periods of being this bad for this long?

1989 Jays started 12-24, 92 and 93 teams had slumps, the year Washington won the World Series in 2019 they started slow. 2015 Jays started 21-28 or something so were worse at this point.

The reason a lot of people are more worried this year is because Jays seem to be all of a sudden way behind the curve in player development, analytics and high performance.

Jays now are basically eliminated from the division, and very unlikely they get a homefield wild card series unless you think the Jays can outplay the Orioles by 7 games the rest of the way.

They are 2.5 games behind a playoff spot and will have to fight with 3 or 4 teams for that. So not really the slump that is the problem, but the slump in context with major improvement by other teams.

Talking Wild Card May 22? I thought someone said anything but a division clinch would be considered a failure.

I hope they get the 2nd WC so we can play the Twins. :P

Fangraphs has our odds at making playoffs under 50%. Oof.

The Orioles and Rangers got better, and the Red Sox, Mariners and Angels are right around where the Jays are with similar or better run differentials. Probably says more about the improved competition than the Jays themselves, but clearly the Jays aren't helping their cause with the way they've gotten their asses kicked by the AL East lately.

I actually like when there are more competitive teams. It makes the season a bit more fun (if not stressful) but the added competition, assuming it stays this way, is only going to make it harder for the Jays to make the playoffs.

Perfect - I hope the casuals and trolls lose interest in the team and find something else to fill their time with.

Hoping for a split... at least we miss Glasnow, he's back on Saturday. :P

They'll now no longer need an opener and Fleming, which has worked admirably for them. The error by Vlad today was a killer, our defense cost Bassitt 4 unearned runs, man. Although, Bassitt gave up 3 dingers, poop!

I'm hoping to avoid a sweep but I like your optimism.

Lol so let me get this straight. You would rather the Jays be trash so that the casual fans lose interest and you along with the other 14 or 15 regulars can have the forum all to yourselves again over the Jays being good? I think I have to agree with the sentiment of a post I seen in another thread (cant remember who), but at this point why is this forum not just private for the 15-20 regulars who are here everyday and seem to not want anyone else involved.

Really?

Usually the trolls disappear when the team is doing well.

And we should welcome casual fans who want to learn more.

Nah, just wish the people would quit the insane daily bitching when the team is in a slump, then disappear for weeks at a time when the team is good. If all you do is bitch publicly when things are bad, but don't celebrate publicly when things are good, you're an assclown.

I think there is a mixture of I guess for lack of a better word "trolls" who do as you say say, only show up to bitch when things are bad, and casuals who are trying to dip their toes in, maybe have a mixture of questions, positive posts and a little negativity as well. I think the casuals are getting lumped in with the trolls, probably not on purpose by "most" forum members.

This is a better description of the people I hope lose interest. I will call them ass clowns from now on to avoid confusion. I don't think all ass clowns are trolls though - I think a large % of them are just casual fans who get upset when the team loses, but they are so under educated, that they can't form any rational opinion or view and thus add nothing to the forum. They just say things like "it's over, this team doesn't have it" or "Atkins is stupid, everyone he brought in is terrible".

It's been my observation that these posters typically hover around here early in the season and throw s*** around at every sign of weakness. Every lost game is someone's fault, someone is s***, someone should be fired - like they expect the team to go 162-0. I find they typically lose steam as the season goes on (because they are casual fans) and then they f*** off until late March the following year.

I think the team has fallen so far that they will soon lose interest and piss off soon enough. I hope I'm right. That's certainly not to say I'm happy the Jays are slumping big time right now - nor to say I don't enjoy new posters who contribute to the board in a positive manner. Jays333 - you'd generally fall into this category. I think you've adjusted well after a rough start here with some odd opinions.

We have posters bitching about Varsho hitting a home run because it is “low leverage”. Like, my God man, what can you even say to that?

Nothing. It's the perfect illustration as to why their opinions are akin to the brown stains on their underwear.
