So far this season

Still think 5 yrs/$90M was a pretty big gamble

The bat looks EXTREMELY legit.

But so far the defense and baserunning look horrible. That contract is good for a viable outfielder but if he is closer to a DH it's not good.

They list him at 5'8'' 176 but he seems closer to 200 than he does 175. Stocky and not a very fluid athlete - he looks very slow. The statcast numbers back this up in both sprint speed and defense.

They got roasted for his deal but even with the defensive concerns I think they have to be pretty pleased with it. That dude can flipping hit.

left field in fenway... defense is relaly kind of .... whatever. Good place to hide that deficiency

He's favourite for AL ROY at 4.50 in Vegas.

But yeah still a big gamble IMO.

I find it odd that 29 year olds who played professionally in Asia for years are eligible for ROTY awards.

agreed, They actually changed the age related rookie rules in the NHL due to Sergei Makarov winning the Calder at age 31. now anyone eligible for ROY in the NHL must be under 26 or under.

This is a good lineup. We could argue about the order but this is our best 9.

Agree

Only change I would make is Varsho 7 and move Merrifield and Kirk up

Yeah I'd probably flip Kirk and Varsho in the order but that's a relatively minor gripe.

Yeah, Kirk and Merrifield should be ahead of Varsho, but regardless the right players are playing. Making the lineup "more lefty" hurts the offense because Belt is washed and Biggio stinks. The two catcher lineup and Merrifield playing everyday at 2B should be the most used lineup unless/until they replace Belt with a better bat.

It sucks

I *WANT* Varsho to be a solid LH bat in the 5 hole after our best hitting righties

But he hasn't been. Hopefully figures it out sooner than later.

I would make sure Kirk is two batters ahead of Varsho so he doesnt clog the bases. But then he slows down Merrifield.

Yeah, Varsho is right now the best baserunner on the team, just ahead of Chapman and Merrifield. Varsho's baserunning value is the only thing keeping him at replacement level since his elite D hasn't really been needed yet.

Vlad is getting under these pitches.

Vlads launch angle right now is either straight into the ground, or straight up in the air. Timing is just off
