Sorry if I'm ignorant or naive here - but did Ivan Prieto just quit, run away and hide in Miami? Are Cuban players guarded or something while they're in the US?
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted March 20, 2023 Posted March 20, 2023 Sorry if I'm ignorant or naive here - but did Ivan Prieto just quit, run away and hide in Miami? Are Cuban players guarded or something while they're in the US? They used to do that. In this case I understand he didn't show up at the airport. The way these regime's control defecting and have indebted servitude etc in most cases is threats against family members remaining in Cuba, China or wherever. If this guy didn't have any family in Cuba to use as leverage then lucky him and you think they would have kept a higher vis on him...

glory Old-Timey Member Posted March 20, 2023 Posted March 20, 2023 It's a shame Sasaki won't come to MLB until about 2027. He'd probably be an ace now.
Stottlemyres_Bloody_Chin Verified Member Posted March 21, 2023 Posted March 21, 2023 Arozarena is the king of taking s***** routes and making catches look harder than they are. Even the HR he brought back wasn't an overly difficult catch. Settle down Randy.

Even the HR he brought back wasn't an overly difficult catch. Settle down Randy. The catch that everyone is raving about from last game wasn’t that great… he took a terrible route and almost missed it. A better OF makes it look easy. I think the over-the-fence catch tonight was more impressive. That being said it seems like Japan is hitting everything to LF and he hasn’t f***ed anything up yet. Making all the plays so can’t complain about him
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted March 21, 2023 Posted March 21, 2023 Some bad OF defense by Japan on both hits there (Arozerena and Verdugo)
JFD Old-Timey Member Posted March 21, 2023 Posted March 21, 2023 Are we outfield defense snobs now that Teo and Pineapple are gone? I'm ok with it.

Lol idk but that Arozerena hit probably could have been caught or at least held to a single. The Verdugo double was more about positioning, they were playing way too shallow there

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted March 21, 2023 Posted March 21, 2023 It's almost comical how dismissive America is about the WBC. I tuned into sports radio today and they were cracking jokes the entire time by asking if it was being televised, etc. Having it compete with March Madness isn't ideal. But it's clear it's having a big impact internationally. I think baseball really needs to think long and hard about expanding it as well as figuring out a way to juice the Olympics some.
