Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 So back to non-ohtani budget. How much you think Atkins has to spend this season (including trade deadline). 50m? Well they spent like $246 million last year, and with arb estimates they are set for about $214 million as it stands, so yeah I'd say $50-60 million more tops.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Trade Vlad while he has two years of control left. Very serious. Our best options for 3b and even OF are via trade. Sign Hoskins or trade Vlad to Mets for Alsono. Use FA to replenish any arms we might lose to trade. Vlad should not be in the conversation for an extension. Read about Prince Fielder. Prince Fielder had a degenerative neck condition condition that forced him to retire. That was zero to do with how heavy he was unless you think he was carrying an extra 50 pounds of weight in his cheeks or something. That has zero to do with whether to sign Vlad to an extension or not. I'd also be worried as hell signing Vlad to a long term deal given the downside he's shown for much of his career, but if he tears things up the next few seasons on another roster I'd have a really hard time forgiving the front office for trading him away for what is likely to be pennies on the dollar.
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 If you are going to have to go find and pay 20M a year to put up numbers less than Vlad, paying Vlad 200M for 10 years is a steal

I doubt his fitness improves after he gets paid so not a no brainer.

Masterbather Verified Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 As much of a kick in the nuts as it feels to get turned down by the prettiest girl in school, there's no way that would have ended up being a good contract. Not even a decent contract. We just wanted the feeling of victory on a major free agent, but if we had come close to those dollars and term it would have been a disaster. There are far better ways to spend money, I just hope Rogers allows the Blue Jays to spend the money despite today's news. Double down on spending on great pitching, trade for a bat and get Bellinger.

There was a very vocal crowd cautioning Texas about taking on that contract for a guy with a body type like PF. One thing to live a normal life with that body weight/type, another to perform as a high level professional athlete. Whether it be neck, knees etc, PF retired from baseball at 32 years old and was only really worth something until he was 30 give or take. There is no way in hell we should give Vlad a 10-12 year contract which is I am sure what it will take. There are teams right now who still think Vlad has tremendous upside. That with two years of control at an relatively decent amount is more valuable than a guy with one year who puts up the same numbers as this year and we shouldn’t plan to extend. Not to mention sub par D and base running.

Yes, it's possible he would have started to drop the next season even if didn't have the neck thing, and IF that happened, the body is likely to have played a role, but it's not as simple as just pointing to a fat guy and stating "everything that goes wrong with you is cuz you're fat and stuff"

Especially playing on turf. You are absolutely turning the odds against yourself. Injuries are difficult enough to avoid as it is in sports. You don't bet on a young man in this mid-twenties who's a professional trying to make bank and can't motivate himself to get into reasonable physical condition while having unlimited professional resources at his disposal. It's f***ing embarrassing for him or anybody else.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Always say no to fatties... if they can't take care of their bodies in their 20s then they're f***ed in their 30s. The least u should be able to do is take care of your bodies as a professional athlete. If you got motivational issues to do that then u got motivational issues in other facets too.

max silver Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Today I learned obesity has nothing to do with spinal injuries Explain to me how this would lead to a chronic neck condition.
Pinkfloid Verified Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 I hope there is a great player out there to trade for. Would help get rid of the second fiddle stigma. Make the team more attractive before going after FAs. Hopefully Mark and Ross were keeping some fires going on the back burner - not much time now that the dominos will start falling.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 T4T Trade 4 Trout Have you looked at that contract? Discounting the covid shortened season Trout has only averaged about 100 games a season since the start of the 2017 season, and only 79 games over the last 3 seasons. He's due to be paid $35 million a season for the next 7 seasons. Maybe the Angels would agree to pay half of his deal or something, but aside from that acquiring this guy would be like Tulo level of complete breakdown risk x infinity.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Explain to me how this would lead to a chronic neck condition. Obesity + millions of max intent rotational movements Now explain to me where C4 and C5 are located

Pinkfloid Verified Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Without Shohei fever gripping the team, I'm honestly ok with wholesale changes in the roster. Not interested in tanking, but a significant overhaul would be welcome. Not sure I could be happy with losing out on Ohtani and then suffering another abysmal, boring (though playoff bound) season.
