Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 The Gausman tweet sounds like it’s about the Harper/Arcia ordeal. Can you explain that? I haven't been paying much attention since the Jays got bounced.
Laika Community Moderator Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 Arcia made fun of Harper's baserunning error (getting doubled off to end the game). Harper heard about it and then hit two homers and stared him down. But apparently what Arcia said was in his own clubhouse, to his own teammates. Something benign like "attaboy, Harper". So a reporter must have over heard and like, told the Phillies.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 Can you explain that? I haven't been paying much attention since the Jays got bounced. Harper got doubled up at 1st base to end Game 2, and there was a quote from a reporter saying that Arcia was mocking Harper in the clubhouse after the game. That pissed Harper off and he went ballistic in Game 3, staring at Arcia when rounding the bases during both of his home runs. So I’m guessing the Braves (and Gausman apparently) are mad that something said in the clubhouse was made public. Of course that’s what I’m assuming Gausman is talking about, and not something Jays related.

Most reporters are scum.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 Gross. Embarrassing. The sideshow is gonna be front and center this season, jist watch. I'm afraid of that, lets hope not.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 I wonder if Atkins is interested in Jorge Soler in free agency. Atkins likes guys who hit the ball hard and Soler fits the bill there. I actually kind of like that he's a DH too. Mainly because he still fills our needs (power) while bringing down his price down significantly. But he also doesn't have any sort of DH penalty when he's hitting like a lot of other guys do. Another guy that would be cheap who provides power is Hunter Renfroe. He's not great in the field but he's passable in a corner OF spot. He's always cheap but given he's coming off a down year he's probably really cheap this year. One problem with them is that they both bat right handed and we are more in need of lefties.

I think he had the second highest xwOBA of all free agents. Ohtani .428 Jorge Soler .376 JDM .370 Joc Pederson .368 Mitch Garver .363 Tommy Pham .361 Andrew McCutchen .351 Donovan Solano .349 Gary Sanchez .342 Chapman .339 Belt .337 Teoscar .336 Lourdes .326 Candelario .319 If I am Toronto I am probably just waiting out the market again and trying to get a dude on a Belt-like deal near the end of the offseason. Pederson/Soler/JDM would all be sweet. Garver I think is legit. Pham and Cutch work but preferably they are in a platoon or your ostensible 4th OF. Solano is a sneaky good fallback option on the infield.

Yeah - Solar's name was tossed around my house the other day (smart teenager) as an option. I was going to ask what the board thought, but didn't get around to it. He's an interesting option. Seems quite volatile year to year.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 Jake Mintz from CespedesBBQ is the guy that leaked the clubhouse chatter from Arcia, revoke his credentials ... Gausman is a MLB hero, and most reporters think Mintz broke decorum and should be let go from Fox at the very least.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 With that crop, MILB influx at 3B, 2B, LF, DH is probable I say they go with org guys for 3B and 2B… guys like Barger, Orelvis, Biggio, Schneider, etc. I think they’ll sign 2 of the bats on that list, one OF and one DH. Could also see a trade happening somewhere. Tim Anderson could also make sense on a 1 year deal at 2B.

Nah f*** this s*** If he was truly "cackling" it repeatedly while walking around the clubhouse with reporters in there, then there is no reason to keep it hush If you overhear a stray thing from a player sure, don't report it, but if a guy is acting like THAT then he is definitely signalling that it's fair game

Agree with all of it They HAVE to sign someone who can maybe have a strong offensive year but it's probably an OF/DH I'd rather watch Tim Anderson try to remember his name all year than watch Biggio and Espinal platoon and combine for 11 home runs. Babe can be the presumptive starter at 3B with Orelvis and Barger waiting for their shot around the IF.

The CHW team let him get his ass beat because he was a POS lmao

Solano is a sneaky good fallback option on the infield. Good list. Garver is pretty damn good. If they made him solely a DH perhaps he could stay healthy. Candelario is actually a pretty sneaky good player too. Good defensive 3B and is a switch hitter without much of a split. He's put up a ton of WAR the past 4 seasons with one of them being pretty bad. 20: 1.9 WAR in the shortened Covid year 21: 3.8 WAR 22: -0.1 23: 3.3 He might be looking for a multi-year deal though and I think we probably only need a stopgap at 3B.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 I like Jake Mintz a lot. One of the few likable media guys who tries to inject a lot of fun into the game. Give him a pass.

I don't know if Babe can handle 3B...I might pencil him in at 2B and try and find a stopgap at 3B to go along with finding an OF and DH.

So Vlad is gone then in this Soler scenario? He's a full time DH moving forward (absolute turd defensively at 1B), and pretty much a replacement level one at that, who will also make 20M in arbitration lmao.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 Who plays 1st then, Dean? You rolling with Spencer Horwitz?

deanmike Verified Member Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 (edited) Who plays 1st then, Dean? You rolling with Spencer Horwitz? I'm about to give an admittedly vague answer here, but pretty much anyone who can provide at least 0.5 fWAR over a full season at 1B who makes considerably less than 20M would be more preferable than Vlad for me. List of options should be pretty long with these parameters, and yes probably includes Horwitz as one of many options. Edited October 12, 2023 by deanmike
