jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted September 13, 2023 Posted September 13, 2023 I don't understand how most regular people can go to a game. If you're a 9-5 jobber in Toronto, how do you do it? Take half a day off? Do businesses allow people to duck out early for a Jays game? It must be mostly retired/slush fund yuppie kids, and people coming from out of province for a visit. Yeah would be better if the games started at 7:35 PM or 8:07 PM. Since games now are moving at a much faster pace, wonder if Shapiro pushes for later start times. Wouldn't be a bad idea. Tough to make it downtown if you finish around 5PM. Plus mostly after a long day, people are exhausted. Going to a Jays weeknight game, you won't be home till at least 11PM haha.

Then watched video of him in Sep 2021 and it was clear he had gained some weight. Then watched video from April 2022 and he had put on more weight.

You seem like an angry little guy. Yes the team sucks but the name calling gives you the appearance of a 14 year old Here’s some advice. Don’t let a sports team dictate your mental health

I just look at a video from summer of 2021 compared to July 2023 and wow - he put on alot of weight Had a little success then got lazy and thought this would last forever - some blame on the Jays here - they have a s*** ton of resources to help, they failed him

jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2023 Posted September 14, 2023 You finish work at 5 and you walk/subway/streetcar over to the dome, not that hard lol. If you're downtown sure. What happens if you live and work outside of the downtown core? Easily 45 mins to an hour commute each way. As well, factor in the cost to watch a game live now. Not like it was used to if you purchase from the Jays box office or from people outside of the Rogers Centre. If you want to purchase decent seats, buy food and have one or two beers, easily $100. Tough for people given the high cost of living and everything now to just do that a couple nights a week, unless they're running up a balance on their credit cards.

BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2023 Posted September 14, 2023 I think games pretty much started around this time always and in the past when we were in the hunt we drew better and a lot more excitement. I just think this team has ground its base down with the perceptions of them. For a 90 ish Win team it sure seems to be a brutal grind of a season. We have done better than the SDP, Mets or Cards but it doesn't feel like it most days. My bud was at the gm last night. He has 4 season tickets in TD Clubhouse and he texted me it was "depressing". I had to dig these probabilities out to remind myself if we win only tonight we are still in ok shape for a PO spot: Blue Jays postseason probabilities based upon Texas series (other games simulated): TEX sweeps: 37% TEX wins 3-1: 59% Split: 80% TOR wins 3-1: 97% TOR sweeps: 99.3%

They shouldn't be rewarded for being so s*** (in this series...and offensively overall).

It never turns out to be as "interesting" as you'd hope though. Between the s*** minor league season and this excruciatingly painful season to watch, this organization has really taken a lot of the wind out of my sails. I was so excited about this season starting...and now I can't wait for it to be over.
Laika Community Moderator Posted September 14, 2023 Posted September 14, 2023 I dunno. Toronto is f***ed. Seattle probably goes 10-6, Texas probably 10-7.

Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2023 Posted September 14, 2023 The numbers suggest this isn't really true. It may be true for you, but there are tons of people at the games. But there are not tonnes at the game in September which is the point. I live in a lower cost of living region (sort of upstate NY), my wife and I are both professionals and since we live in a lower cost region have lots of spare money and can travel for games in the summer. However there is no way we could afford to live in Southern Ontario. All my friends are professionals and the determining factor in their ability to survive in Southern Ontario was whether they purchased a house 20 years ago. If yes they have a home and maybe some spare money. I have friends who through divorces lost their home. They remarry to other professionals earn great money, yet tell me there is no way they could get a home within 250 km of Toronto, unless they essentially wanted to have no spare money at all. This is what they tell me. Not unique to Toronto obviously. NY, Boston, Bay area in the US similar. Difference I think is that in the US there are still affordable towns 2 hours from the big cities. I don't know. Getting political here, but from what I hear people who have chosen to live not just "in Toronto" but within a 250 km radius, don't have any extra money, unless they are priviledged enough to be totally loaded, but like Computer Engineer and Teacher can't afford a house AND recreational activities like baseball games. Now if your job is 'Wall Street bro' or s*** like that you can probably afford all that stuff, but like if it regular professional, no can't afford s*** near Toronto. Just what I hear, and makes sense that the September games have lower attendance, because those of us who live in affordable places can't travel in, in September.

I bought myself a beautiful new Samsung 77" OLED TV with a soundbar, woofer and rear speakers. Its an awesome setup. No need to spend money on expensive tickets and expensive food and drinks at the Rogers Centre unless there is a particular matchup or player I want to see. I'll save my money and plan a weekend trip in October down in the States to see a DS or LS series. Get to experience a better ballpark and better teams at least!
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2023 Posted September 14, 2023 Shapiro - Atkins, why is attendance so low in September? Atkins - I don't know sir. The games are cheap. Only a couple of hundred per person with good seats and beer. Shapiro - Is it the start time? Atkins - Well, if you are like me, and work 10:00 to 4:30 you have plenty of time to get there. Shapiro - Yes, I work 11:00 to 3:30 which gives me too much time to get down to the ballpark. Atkins - What is cost of living like in Toronto? How much extra money to these Canadians have? Shapiro - I'm not sure. Have not been down to Toronto, at least not lately. But they have credit cards and we installed credit card machines. So they can just use their credit cards. They do have credit cards in Toronto right? Atkins - I don't know sir. I have not been down to Toronto in a few years either.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2023 Posted September 14, 2023 Its so f***ing over lmao. Wow. Should be an interesting offseason to say the least. Yeah the Jays really needed a split with the Rangers at the bare minimum. Losing 3, possibly all 4, is putting them in a very difficult position. Losing today might be the nail in the coffin since the rest of the season is all AL East teams who the Jays have bent over for all season. Thankfully I enjoy watching playoff baseball even when the Jays aren’t involved (lord knows I’ve had a lot of practice with that over the last 30 years), and the 2023 Jays team is so boring to watch that missing the playoffs might be doing the fans a favor from an entertainment standpoint.
