Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted August 29, 2023 Posted August 29, 2023 What was "nice" about the depth he provided? Defense.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted August 29, 2023 Posted August 29, 2023 A solid defender, a bat who has had success against lefties and who has some pop. Weird that the Blue Jays acquired him to begin with as insurance for Bo. Tells you how much confidence they had in Espinal a couple of weeks ago. Yeah DeJong's OAA is much better than I thought. Would probably have been better than McCoy. I think DeJong is about replacement level and the change in scenery seemingly f***ed him at the dish. Dude was completely lost. Hopefully they give Clement a chance as I think he's better anyway.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted August 29, 2023 Posted August 29, 2023 I agree with this wholeheartedly. I wonder if there was more to this in the background as that's unlike Atkins. There definitely could be. Weird how Atkins acquired DeJong at the trade deadline mainly for the purpose as insurance for Bo and then after two weeks gets DFA'd when you could have still kept him around and have Espinal join the roster again on September 1st. Hope someone in the media does ask him that question.

Yeah I hope Clement does get a chance as well and could contribute over these next couple of weeks until Bo gets back. Some players do struggle for a period of time right after they're traded. DeJong is a replacement level player and sucks but he was brutal during his time here (3 hits in 44 ABs).
MikeM3 Verified Member Posted August 29, 2023 Posted August 29, 2023 We're going to stumble into Clement. He's got a different stance than last year and more line drivey
BlueJays Verified Member Posted August 29, 2023 Posted August 29, 2023 Why is Espinal still in the roster? Why the management is so damn high with him?

jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted August 29, 2023 Posted August 29, 2023 Why is Espinal still in the roster? Why the management is so damn high with him? All-Star season in 2022!
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 29, 2023 Posted August 29, 2023 All-Star season in 2022! Buck Martinez for the next 10 years, even after Espinal has been punted around by 5 teams: "He was an All Star for the Blue Jays in 2022!"
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 29, 2023 Posted August 29, 2023 Tonight's lineup: 1. George Springer ® RF 2. Davis Schneider ® 2B 3. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. ® 1B 4. Danny Jansen ® C 5. Whit Merrifield ® LF 6. Alejandro Kirk ® DH 7. Ernie Clement ® SS 8. Santiago Espinal ® 3B 9. Kevin Kiermaier (L) CF
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted August 29, 2023 Posted August 29, 2023 Okay yeah apparently there is no plan really lol Probably should have kept DeJong.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted August 29, 2023 Posted August 29, 2023 Okay yeah apparently there is no plan really lol Probably should have kept DeJong. He got 3 hits in his Giants debut. And has went 0-16 since.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted August 29, 2023 Posted August 29, 2023 He got 3 hits in his Giants debut. And has went 0-16 since. Yeah he his horrible. If you go back and read I've been harder on him than anyone. I think him at SS and Clement at 3B today with Espinal on the bench instead of McCoy would be a better lineup though.
deanmike Verified Member Posted August 29, 2023 Posted August 29, 2023 I don't know if Lantigua is good at defense. He doesn't play SS a whole lot and it's hard to believe that a midget like him would have good range/arm. Plus, he's actually turned himself into a guy that should be playing everyday. My guess is McCoy isn't going to play much at all and if he does it's because he's good at defense. There actually is an everyday spot open for him as long as Bo or Chapman remain out. Lantigua's bat is like a Schneider-lite in the sense that it plays better vs RHP than LHP despite Lantigua batting right. Clement hasn't hit righties well so far in his career. Should be lineup vs RHP: RF Springer DH/1B Belt 1B/DH Vlad 3B Schneider 2B Whit LF Varsho C Jansen/Kirk SS Lantigua CF KK Should be lineup vs LHP: RF Springer 2B Schneider 1B Vlad DH/C Jansen LF Whit C/DH Kirk 3B Clement SS Lantigua CF Varsho/KK And with 6 of the next 8 games projected to be against LHP starters, the team could have even called up Orelvis for this stretch to see what he's got instead of continuing to DH Kirk vs LHP on non-catch days even though he has a sub-100 wRC+ vs both lefties and righties this season.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted August 29, 2023 Posted August 29, 2023 DeJong sucks. He was a -1.0 WAR player in like 2 weeks. You can't keep throwing him out there hoping he corrects things when every win matters. He was depth but s***** depth, which the Jays don't need. Of course, that same logic applies to starting Espinal, but Schneider keeps playing him.
deanmike Verified Member Posted August 29, 2023 Posted August 29, 2023 Okay yeah apparently there is no plan really lol Probably should have kept DeJong. Yikes. Espitrash and McTrash is definitely weird lol.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted August 29, 2023 Posted August 29, 2023 Wow that lineup is looking like the Cleveland Guardians lineup
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted August 29, 2023 Posted August 29, 2023 So Bo was out yesterday against a righty and a lefty today so we can kind of see what the plan is already and John Schneider is right, it is crazy with a lot of moving parts. vs RHP/vs LHP C: Jansen 1b: Vlad 2B: Whit/Schneider 3B: Schneider/Espinal SS: Clement LF: Varsho/Whit CF: Kiermaier RF: Springer DH: Belt/Kirk McCoy, Biggio and the other Catcher look to be more full-time bench players
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted August 29, 2023 Posted August 29, 2023 I cannot wait to start the Extend Ernie Clement thread after tonight's game.
Masterbather Verified Member Posted August 29, 2023 Posted August 29, 2023 Some team is going to pick up Espinal on the cheap and get solid value out of him for a couple of years.
wilko Old-Timey Member Posted August 29, 2023 Posted August 29, 2023 Some team is going to pick up Espinal on the cheap and get solid value out of him for a couple of years. Well he is a former All-Star.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted August 29, 2023 Posted August 29, 2023 Maybe the Jays have some big brain strat that they don't want to call up Martinez yet and waste his rookie eligibility so he can start the Season on the roster next year and get us a first round pick for winning Rookie of the Year!
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted August 29, 2023 Posted August 29, 2023 Varsho should be starting over Espinal. Even against lefties. Whoever is deciding he starts should be fired.

BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted August 30, 2023 Posted August 30, 2023 ...It's gettin' dark, too dark to see. Feels like I'm knockin' on heaven's door... Seems like only a month or two ago the board was “we are on a X win pace” and “it’s early” and “we are coming into a softer schedule” dominated the board after pissing away yet another winnable game. Been a tough year. Ain’t over yet but it’s getting tougher with every L. Shame if we waste such a solid pitching season.

He would still retain his rookie eligibility. Corbin Carroll was a September call up last year
