jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted July 23, 2023 Posted July 23, 2023 Last night shows we need another bat for the bench. Kirk has a 90 wRC since June of 2022 and Espinal 93 since the start of 2022 and I don’t think his defence is as good as it was last season. I Yeah Kirk has been awful for over a year. I think its time we accept he's maybe just a .250/.340/.330 type bat. He needs to start hitting for some average power. Ideally we want to see .270/.380/.400 from Kirk.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted July 23, 2023 Posted July 23, 2023 Good Pearson sucks I guess he ain't being used in a deal for Bellinger lol
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted July 23, 2023 Posted July 23, 2023 They should probably DFA Yimi soon to avoid his option for next Season. Not sure why they would want him on the books for 6 million next season. I feel they could bring in 2 similar relievers for that price. What an amazing BP built by Atkins! Bass DFA, Cimber sucks, Garcia sucks. These guys were supposed to be good lol.
JaysAllMighty Old-Timey Member Posted July 24, 2023 Posted July 24, 2023 Hah... an IL lister. When I made the GDT the other day I cleared my IL, now they are all going back on the list because they are still posting stupid s***.

Yimi has actually been good since he fixed his issue with tipping pitches. Since beginning of June he's got a 2.16era/2.26fip with a 18/1 K/BB.
Laika Community Moderator Posted July 24, 2023 Posted July 24, 2023 Didn't catch much of the games over the weekend but I saw one inning from Manoah and his slider kind of seemed... back? It looked like a plus pitch

It looked like a plus pitch Yeah, it looked real good after the 2nd inning, spotty command on the FB though, he got real lucky early and then looked like the Manoah of old after, until he walked a guy and gave up a basehit in the 6th, not bad. If he gets his command back on the FB(again it was spotty), with THAT slider, we might not be in such a dire position.

It looked like a plus pitch It was better, but still very inconsistent. One hitter he’d have the plus, next he’d be putting it in the LH batters box.
hanton Old-Timey Member Posted July 24, 2023 Posted July 24, 2023 Please start Ryu against the Dodgers - that would be kind of exciting to watch

Here's a list of RP who signed this past season and their AAV. I left out some of the big names obviously, but all these guys ranged from 0.3 to 1.3 WAR in 2022 (Yimi was at 0.9). Matt Moore - $7.55 Adam Ottavino - $7.25 Andrew Chafin - $6.25 Jesse Chavez - $1.2 David Robertson - $10.0 Craig Kimbrel - $10.0 Brad Boxberger - $2.8 Robert Suarez - $9.2 Michael Fulmer - $4.0 Shelby Miller - $1.5 Matt Strahm - $7.5 I don't think you're getting 2 quality arms for $6M this offseason. Yimi is perfectly fine and has pitched great as of late. Don't be fooled by an inflated ERA - it's not 1997. He's not getting DFA'd and he'll be part of the pen next year.

But with the plus break though, that's what had me giddy, he certainly found it. I think he threw only one slider in the 1st if my memory is correct.

BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted July 24, 2023 Posted July 24, 2023 Yimi has been better lately and given the price of established RP I don't fret too much about a year of $6M with the upside he brings. I think he was used incorrectly a lot sitting between innings. He doesn't seem to to perform as well in those situations.

You can find this information under the pitch modelling tab in fangraphs when viewing a team's overall pitching stats. This can be sorted by date in order to isolate an individual start. Manoah's second start back doesn't seem to be available in the Stuff+ rating on Fangraphs. Vs Tigers 4 seamer 85 Sinker 83 Slider 88 Changeup 49 Stuff+ 82 Location+ 112 Pitching+ 109 Vs Mariners 4 seamer 92 Sinker 72 Slider 99 Changeup 47 Stuff+ 86 Location+ 79 Pitching+ 75 Before Demotion 4 seamer 92 Sinker 95 Slider 96 Changeup 71 Stuff+ 91 Location+ 95 Pitching+ 93 After Return 4 seamer 88 Sinker 79 Slider 94 Changeup 48 Stuff+ 84 Location+ 95 Pitching+ 92 The stuff+ numbers are unfortunately worse across the board since he's returned from the minor leagues.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 24, 2023 Posted July 24, 2023 yikes...what type of sample size is needed to make judgements? It's pretty small isn't it?

Thanks for that, I was going nuts trying to find it on FG and gave up.

jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted July 24, 2023 Posted July 24, 2023 You've turned into a bloody troll. Lmao. I won't spam the GDTs ever and while I'm criticial of this FO maybe a bit too much, I do give praise when due. When three arms like Bass, Cimber and Garcia who are supposed to be important parts of your middle relief corps, are all pitching below average on a team with Postseason aspirations, thats not good. Relievers are volatile yes, but start having to asking questions why this FO can't complement this roster with a solid pen.
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted July 24, 2023 Posted July 24, 2023 The pen is like top 5 (ish) in MLB in most key categories. That's pretty solid.

He needs to be just used as a 6th/7th inning guy and should only pitch one inning max that's it. Who do we place blame on though? Schneider or the FO brains pulling the strings upstairs?

Man the numbers show that before the Mariners series we had the number 1 bullpen in the league since June 1st

There's nobody to blame for Yimi unless you want to blame the team for not identifying that he was tipping his pitches sooner. Other than that - blame variance and bad luck? This is a good pen that's about to get better when Green returns.
