That friend was offered the job and later told they ignore AA's references as they are all bad on anyone under 30. This was confirmed later by the Rays as he did the same thing to someone who applied with them.

No one hates AA more than me, and I still think he is a terrible person. However, he has learned a lot as a GM. He added by subtraction losing some voices that influenced him far too greatly. Two years in LA and the Sabermetrics program enrollment obviously helped him out. Still think he has trouble building a 40 man roster. He is a top 10 GM in baseball. Still wouldn't hire him, and would never cheer for the Braves because of him (and their fans) but he is good at building a 26 man roster which is probably pretty important

 

All internal politics and personal opinions aside. AA became one of the best GMs in the fall/winter of 2014. It took him some trial and error to get to that point. We were probably a healthy Bret Cecil away from a WS birth...

 

Point being he was a very good/solid GM before he went to the Dodgers, regardless of the level of Sabermetrics he applied to his decisions. He rightfully earned the name the Ninja prior to Atlanta and they even changed the claim and comp rules after AA pulled that awesome s*** with the Rockies catcher...

 

AA had a better all around base to work with in Atlanta and he just continued on from what he started in late 2014.

Clark Schmidt pitched better than Manoah did this year and is a solid SP to keep you competitive in a game. The Padres are apparently asking for Thorpe, King and Schmidt, plus two other pitchers.. Insane high ask at the moment..

Manoah and Schimdt are similar assets to be honest. Teams might prefer one or the other depending on what they think they can do with them.

Lol I'm watching him on youtube , May highlights. The command is really off but from what I saw down the stretch it got a little better. I was watching the games in hospital when he threw that really bad Taylor Ward pitch. Hopefully both recover. Manoahs pretty much gone though and still has nice value to the Pads and other teams. Wish him well, great future ahead.

Let's say you're a good team and have 45 players that could reasonably make the 40 man roster on most teams. Then let's say you're a trash bag team that only has 35 players than some other team would want. Which team did the better roster management? The Braves aren't an 85-90 win team with a roster crunch like the Jays were under AA. They are a 100+ win team with a roster crunch. There's merit to complaining about AA's roster management while here because the Jays consistently gave wasted PA to riff raff on the 25 man while also having issues with the 40 man. Braves sending a bunch of guys to the WS where they will be nurtured into a black hole as opposed to watching them maybe land on NL teams and bite them in the ass is the best move he could have done given the situation.

While I would agree, it should also be noted it’s certainly not the unknown gamble it was years ago. There’s at least been some sample size now to see how they translate.
