What a strange trade. I don't follow the minutae of 40 man roster stuff etc but could someone give me the Coles notes on why either team did this?

Soroka and Lopez both have limited control left and will cost $3M+ in arb so with Atlanta's MLB depth they were probably considering non tendering them both. Almost no value.

Shuster and Shewmake have cheap control but their numbers are not great. They are name brand prospects in a bad system. They don't project well.

Bummer is a reliever with a few years left of getting expensive control on a horrible team.

Great trade for White Sox to be honest.

Understandable trade for Atlanta but I bet AA is frustrated he could not make better use of these assets. He traded them all at rock bottom values in a roster crunch context. Kind of a late night, capitulation dynasty baseball trade lol. f*** it I'm sick of negotiating fine

Why do Canadian pitchers always get hurt? Does it have anything to do with not pitching during the winter months when they are a kid/teen and then the increased work load or what?

Possibly (needs a stats study to confirm), but 90% of Canadians live within 100 km of the US border so the same would apply to any pitcher from the border, northern states.

I doubt there's much of a causation link between geographic origin of a pitcher and their subsequent injury rates.

f*** the A's have zero class.

They probably got a really good deal on that advertising. I read that sphere thing is bleeding money so far

I don’t really understand why anyone is crying about it. Oakland didn’t want to support the team, so owners didn’t invest. Let’s see what happens in Vegas. I’m sure Vegas wanted to know it wasn’t going to be a s*** team like it’s been. So if the team is better, it’s better for baseball.

Feels like the green will go dark grey ish to mimic the Knights if I had to guess. A modern rebrand

If the A's drop the green - that will be super depressing. The Oakland green is some of the best threads in all of baseball.

Not sure why the Jays would trade assets for India, when he’s projected to be a minimal upgrade on Biggio.

I think it really depends on the cost. He's a guy with a good pedigree, is entering his physical prime and is statcats numbers were a lot better last year (similar to 2021) and they were in 2022 (despite there not being a lot of change in the results). Obviously no guarantee you'll get much more than he provided last year, but I do still think there's some upside there and we do need another infielder. At the right price, I'd bring him on - my hesitation is that he can't play 3rd and Babe Schneider (or Biggio) probably can't either...

Pretty crazy we were just 2 Blake Snell votes away from having unanimous winners for the MVP, Cy Young and ROY in both leagues (has that ever happened before?). I'm pretty shocked the voting was so unanimous for the NL Cy Young award. I guess ERA still holds a ton of weight with voters.

The term, a cold state player, is definitely a thing in the MLB draft.

Yes I think the workload is not conistent throughout the year, specifically pitching in games during the warmer months and going 100% indoors in the winter. The better prospects will go down south to compete in the winter but then it's back fully indoors when they return. Guess that's where the term "cold weather prospect" comes from. There's probably other factors...training related...etc

I do think there's also the counter effect for pitchers in warm weather states who play baseball year round - the overuse of arms, especially at younger ages causing issues.

It's a bit ironic that in Ontario, we have pitch count rules, designed, through the use of studies, to prevent injury and promote growth and development - yet when we go down and compete in US tournaments, there is almost no rules (if there are, they are miles away from our rules) to protect arms. Most Ontario teams that have success at US tournaments run out of pitching on Sunday (where in some tournaments, may require you to play 3-4 games on the Sunday to win the tournament). I'm not sure if the "cold weather" states use different pitch count restrictions simply because we don't throw/pitch/compete year round or not.

Yes in the sense these players may need more development time, not higher injury risk.

lmao horrible landing spot for Quantrill

well, I guess he'll take MLB Colorado over AAA anywhere

I think Colorado is a horrible landing spot for any player in baseball.

USA most definitely has pitch counts for as young as 10 for sure. Maybe earlier

I believe they use innings and not pitches. Like for U13 baseball in Ontario, you can throw 85 pitches and then you need to rest for 4 days. That typically get's a good pitcher through 4-5 innings, 6 if you're getting a lot of quick outs, but that's very unlikely. In the US, they'll say you can only throw 7 innings in 1 day and then you need 1 full day off before you can throw 7 again (I'm 100% guessing at this, but it's nowhere near as restrictive as it is in Ontario).

11-12 year old kids will throw 7 innings (with probably 100+ pitches) on a Friday night of a tournament and then throw another 7 innings on the Sunday without anyone blinking an eye.

They use either one depending on the tournament rules

Rockies extended Charlie Blackmon for another year and then traded for Quantrill.

That should do it for the Rockies this offseason. Dick Monfort is probably already tanning his cheeks down in Mexico.

Self high five.
