connorp Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2023 Posted October 20, 2023 brother, Kim f***ing Ng turned them down the Boston Red Sox are almost the connorp of MLB baseball maybe they can find a nice Morrocan GM or something Explain why it wouldn’t be a premier spot. High salary, large payroll, some decent building blocks, tons of money for analytics, scouting, etc. The last guy got plenty of rope. The only downside is the pressure of a big market
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2023 Posted October 20, 2023 There are 30 GM jobs in all of baseball. Getting turned down multiple times is ROUGH. I mean Ng took the Marlins job for crying out loud and that's got to be one of the bottom 10 of the 30. But she's too good for the Red Sox? The Red Sox are either a dumpster fire or there is industry chatter that they already have their man and people like Click and Ng don't want to waste their time. Or perhaps it really is just unique personal decisions from Click and Ng. But I prefer to ignore that and dunk on the Red Sox instead it's more fun.

Must be something ugly in there that people know about, or something bad about the position. I am pretty f***ing sure that Kim Ng and James Click are not turning down the interview because of the "pressure of a big market."
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2023 Posted October 20, 2023 I can totally understand why Click wouldn’t want to go be in the spotlight somewhere. Makes a lot more sense to be under the radar for a bit longer

connorp Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2023 Posted October 20, 2023 Someone like Click gets hired, it might not last the first week of intense media backlash. Kim Ng would be the progress the AP wants

The only downside is the pressure of a big market Owner interference seems to be a factor and is often cited as the main reason GMs don't want to go somewhere. I remember when Keith Law turned down the Astros back when they were the Lastros and he cited owner interference. They are perennial contenders now but it seems like the owners do in fact interfere there as evident by the Click situation. I thought he was crazy but in hindsight it is best for all parties involved because it would have been hilarious to think of Keith Law and his brand of outspoken far-left SJW politics (reported myself already don't worry) running a team based in Houston, Texas. lmao With the Red Sox it seems like the team was forced to trade Mookie Betts and then just a couple of years later it seems like they were forced to spend money. That kind of yo-yo'ing has to be extremely frustrating for a GM.

It doesn’t mean it’s a white flag for a rebuild, sometimes it’s debatable what’s best. Keeping Betts seems to have been the move there though
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2023 Posted October 20, 2023 But to your point, I could agree ownership could be a factor. Though I’m not saying it’s the case with Boston, idk
glory Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2023 Posted October 20, 2023 Dave Dombrowski with the Red Sox... 2016: 93-69, lost in ALDS 2017: 93-69, lost in ALDS 2018: 108-54, won World Series 2019: 76-67, 3rd in AL East (fired prior to end of season) I don't recall the circumstances of his firing, maybe due to sign stealing stuff going on with the org at the time, but something like that followed by hiring Chaim Bloom to wreck the team for 4 years is probably not the most appealing recent track record. Keep in mind the new GM is going to inherit some bad contracts and will likely have to keep the team competitive. It's not a job that someone with options would leap at unless it was a dream job.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2023 Posted October 20, 2023 My brother was a Sox fan Any Canadian who cheers for the Red Sox should be deported immediately.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2023 Posted October 20, 2023 Any Canadian who cheers for the Red Sox should be deported immediately. Born/raised in NY. It’s the Socks or Yankees. The fact I was a Bluejay fan was a red flag early on I guess you could say
Laika Community Moderator Posted October 20, 2023 Posted October 20, 2023 Any Canadian who cheers for the Red Sox should be deported immediately. Many east coast Canadians cheer for the Red Sox. Sadly.

Yeah and it seems like a lot of the bad contracts came at the directive of ownership though I don't know that with 100% certainty. There doesn't seem to be a long term plan where they are building for something. It's an aimless organization with a good but not great payroll and the expectations of winning. Bloom seemed to be doing ok, even with one hand tied behind his back. But he was shown the door.
Laika Community Moderator Posted October 20, 2023 Posted October 20, 2023 I'm not sure ownership meddled or if Chaim Bloom just sucked. Like, a team with their resources should be able to remain somewhat competitive while they rebuild the system. They axed Dombrowski specifically because they just thought a rebuild was needed and he was not the right person for it. So that alone is owner meddling, I guess. The owner thinks they know exactly when a full rebuild is needed? That's a high level baseball decision. I suppose the Mookie Betts trade would have more or less been a directive from ownership... they probably poo poo'd the possibility of extending him.
Omar Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2023 Posted October 20, 2023 Lmao hilarious. First Click now Ng. Ng probably did not want to face the inevitable racial back lash that is embedded in the Boston fan base.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2023 Posted October 20, 2023 I don't remember this all 100% clearly but it seemed to me that ownership was clearly involved in the Betts trade as they attempted to tightly control the PR of it. They made the trade but got a ton of backlash on it so they waffled on Brusdar Graterol's medical records. They got a slightly better version of the deal but everyone on all sides were pretty pissed about. Then a bunch of crap happened with Verdugo (he was hurt and had some off field stuff). If ownership isn't involved in baseball decisions then why are they making public comments on everything all the time? Henry has also consistently bundled the PR around payroll. Saying it's going down then claiming her never said that and then claiming it was going up again and it didn't really. There is no real reason for that team to have to yo-yo payroll like this (they were 13th last year) unless ownership is directing it. I guess that's what ownership does but that team should have consistently strong payrolls. 13th highest is embarrassing for them. It all just reeks of ownership meddling.
wilko Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2023 Posted October 20, 2023 Many east coast Canadians cheer for the Red Sox. Sadly. Shitloads of Sox fans there. Boston has a weird relationship with the east coast. Every Christmas they deliver Boston a huge ass Christmas tree. I think it has to do with the Halifax explosion.

When you talk about not extending a player like that, you’re crossing lanes from “meddling”, to something that of course the owner is going to have a huge say in.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2023 Posted October 20, 2023 I wonder in Toronto ownership is meddling in trying to extend Bo and Vlad for blank checks

Every Christmas they deliver Boston a huge ass Christmas tree. I think it has to do with the Halifax explosion. There is 100%. Nova Scotians could travel to watch the BoSox relatively easy. Lots of the fishermen I played baseball and softball with were huge BoSox fans. They loved YAZ and Fred Lynn. I never really was. I got into the Expos young - Rusty Staub and Jarry Park. It is why I'm a Bruins fan though. As a kid I used to listen to games on my am radio in bed. The radio waves would carry across the water in and out from Boston Garden. Orr and Espo, Bucyk etc. Its probably changed a lot with the media explosion. I left in '86.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2023 Posted October 20, 2023 Any Canadian who cheers for the Red Sox should be deported immediately. For some folks they could swim to Boston faster than to fly to Toronto. Make sense especially the old timers that existed before Canadian MLB teams. Would rather than TBH than a bunch of Canadians that s*** on Toronto for whatever reason but then cheer for the sports teams. PS. I know I usually come off as rah-rah pro-Canadian because I cheer for all Canadian NHL teams, but that's more my hatred for Gary Bettman and wanting him to get an ulcer with an all Canadian Stanley Cup. Places like Detroit and Winnipeg are equally depressing winterized shitholes no matter what side of the border. They deserve and earned NHL hockey. Phoenix? f*** you and your 18 degree Celsius January evenings. Get your own form of mild winter entertainment.

It doesnÂ’t mean itÂ’s a white flag for a rebuild, sometimes itÂ’s debatable whatÂ’s best. Keeping Betts seems to have been the move there though I'm at the point now where as long as a deal made sense, I am absolutely okay with dealing anyone off the team (or walking as an FA). Hope most Jays fans over the age of 12 feel the same. There is nobody lovable on this team. Back in the day I was upset at the way Delgado left, plus there was some sensitivity around the Expos and some douchebag commentators trying to lump the Jays in with that in contraction talks. But Rogers isn't like those days. $200M+ payroll regardless.

In the 80s the blue collar BoSox fans in the area I'm from in NS didn't fly much. They drove to Boston 7-8 hours less time than Toronto. Or get their vehicle on a short ferry ride to Maine and up from there. Also...this was early-mid 80s and TOR was just building as a legit team....mind you the BoSox kinda sucked for a lot of that same time too. Most of them would be TOR bound now.
leaffie Verified Member Posted October 21, 2023 Posted October 21, 2023 very first mlb game I ever saw was in Boston. I was just a little girl and fell in love with baseball and have loved the game ever since.
