Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted October 18, 2023 Posted October 18, 2023 Gold Glove nominees are out. 5 Blue Jays (Berrios, Chapman, Varsho, KK and Kirk). Biggest shock is Arenado wasn't nominated this year, after winning it for 10 straight years. Riley nominated over Arenado is a joke, although Ke-Bryan Hayes should win the award anyway (and he may for the foreseeable future). and yes, Moreno was also nominated in the NL.

People keep talking about how she is "qualified twice over" to run a team but really very little she has done with the Marlins demonstrates that she is an upper half GM.

Doesn't excuse you when your #2 choice falls flat on his face like Segura did. Did she also prefer someone else to Avisail Garcia? Both were awful signings.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted October 18, 2023 Posted October 18, 2023 Lol no s***. No mention of the massive deal she gave a corner outfielder who I presume sucks at D and has 15 HR upside. Pretty sure it was a 4 year deal too. Was a real head scratcher then and looks terrible now
glory Old-Timey Member Posted October 18, 2023 Posted October 18, 2023 That "Ross Atkins preferred Cody Bellinger to Daulton Varsho Last Off Season" article is going to be incredible. What an oddly specific and pointless thing to write about. Ng made some decent moves (Luzardo being the best one) but also had some stinkers in there (Garcia contract). If they wanted to write an article detailing every move, then that might have been an interesting read, but just singling out that Segura/Turner move is strange.

Luzardo for Starling Marte was a great move good call. The A’s are so bad

Didn’t her drafting suck huge and they wanted someone to help with that and she bailed? She’s below mediocre.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted October 19, 2023 Posted October 19, 2023 I'm curious what the board thinks about Arenado. Are we firmly in a decline now? I was prepared to give him a pass in the COVID 2020 season, but he hasn't been great with the bat in 2 of the past 3 season - albeit the sandwich season in between was his very best! Is he going to rebound and cruise into the HOF? or is he going to end up like Longoria and limp to the finish line, falling just short of a HOF career?

Of course wRC+ last 4 years is 76 (sss), 112, 150, 107. that's after five straight prime years of 121 to 133. it's probable that he is done being an elite defender his under the hood offensive numbers don't show any drastic drops but you can see small things like uptick in chase rate the last couple of years, trouble getting the ball in the air this year. very much feels like Evan Longoria circa 2017/2018 probably at the stage of his career where a 3 WAR season is close to as good as you can hope for
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted October 19, 2023 Posted October 19, 2023 Arenado will probably have a resurgence in NY. If there’s any nerds running StL that believe in WAR, it’s pretty clear Walker needs to be a 3b
BTS Community Moderator Posted October 19, 2023 Posted October 19, 2023 I think the 10 straight gold gloves gets him into the HoF unless he completely falls off a cliff next year. Probably finishes with 400+ HR, 55 fWAR and a run of 10-straight gold gloves.

The 10 GG's probably help a lot. Looks like Longoria will fall short. I was always such a huge fan of Longoria and David Wright back in the day. Arenado just needs to start drinking whatever Adrian Beltre did in his early 30's.

Definitely many writers will blow their load over 10 straight GGs. But Wright - Longoria - Arenado will be a fascinating group to watch slowly be voting eligible as they are so similar (assuming Arenado is done being a star player). Like if David Wright doesn't get in how can you argue for either of the other two? None of them are Hall of Famers to me. Actually, I'll walk that back a bit. Arenado might get there.

Man I thought Longo was going to be an easy HoFer. 45.7 fWAR through age-30, then just 9 in the 7 years since. Another 3B in a similar boat is Jose Ramirez. 46.7 fWAR through age-30. He's like two-more 5-win seasons from getting to slam-dunk territory, and can also get in if he has a run of good but not great seasons into his mid-late 30s. Probably helps if he plays his whole career in Cleveland.

Wright is tough. Didn't even hit 300 HR, 1000 R or 1000 RBI. 2 gold gloves. Never led the league in any major categories. No major awards outside of the gold gloves. Arenado is going to end up with a more impressive resume, even if only because Wright's career was derailed by injury.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted October 19, 2023 Posted October 19, 2023 The following people are nominated for the HOF through the committee HOF vote: Cito Gaston Davey Johnson Jim Leyland Ed Montague Hank Peters Lou Piniella Cowboy Joe West Bill White Without looking (I don't even know who a few of these guys are), I'd suggest Piniella and Leyland deserve some consideration. If Cowboy Joe West gets in, does that pave the way for Angel to get in?

Was a huge fan of both Longoria and David Wright back in the day as well. Wright was one of my favourite players. Sucks injuries derailed and ended his career early. I think Arenado still gets into the HOF. As long as he doesn't turn into a pumpkin offensively and continues to post a couple more 2-3 WAR seasons, he should get in. I still think we could another bounce back elite season from him.

There are reasons for Arenado’s underperformance this year. He experienced a dead-arm sensation for the majority of the first half of the season and didn’t feel like he fully regained his strength back in his throwing arm until mid-July. Arenado also experienced back spasms throughout the second half, which grew so severe that it ultimately ended his season. The Cardinals placed Arenado on the injured list with 10 games remaining in the regular season. https://theathletic.com/4974733/2023/10/18/mlb-gold-glove-finalists-list/
