I hate the challenge system, it feels like a half-assed "solution" to a very, very real problem. There's no need to appease the umps.
Laika Community Moderator Posted January 13, 2023 Posted January 13, 2023 I like the challenge system because it's better than the current system

Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted January 13, 2023 Posted January 13, 2023 I think we're going to see a lot of these type of comments coming from Acuna. My guess is that he has a bit of a chip on his shoulder from the contract, sort of like how Bautista did when he wanted his ridiculous extension. If you're getting paid $300 million from your club, you shut up and come to work lol. If you feel you've been underpaid, you're going to speak up and know you can get away with it. Or hope the disruption causes a rift which ends up with you going elsewhere and getting a sweet extension in the process. Someone in Acuna's position coming back from injury knows damn well why he hasn't been "invited" to participate.
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted January 13, 2023 Posted January 13, 2023 I'd rather have the challenge system than the current one. Sure, but why not FIX the problem rather than slap a coat of paint on it and pretend you've fixed the problem?
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted January 13, 2023 Author Posted January 13, 2023 Sure, but why not FIX the problem rather than slap a coat of paint on it and pretend you've fixed the problem? Baby steps. First they needs to run the challenge system for a few years to really show the umps how useles they are at calling balls/strikes compared to ABS.

Wasn't Bautista also not granted permission to play for the DR in the WBC one year?
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted January 13, 2023 Posted January 13, 2023 Re: Challenge system. They also need a few years to work out the kinks IIRC. It should be the other way around. The roboumps call it but the umpire and/or teams reserve the right to overturn or challenge an obviously glitchy or wrong call. I honestly don't see how the union would have a problem with this. Literally taking the worst/hardest/most dangerous part of the job out of their hands and leaving it to machines. The farmer is tilling the land with a tractor instead of by hand. But you still need the farmer.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted January 13, 2023 Posted January 13, 2023 Soto agreed to $23M Ohtani and Soto both likely to hit free agency after this season.....

Will make the this year's insane deals look small Also Machado when he presumably opts out Edited January 14, 2023 by G-Snarls
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted January 13, 2023 Posted January 13, 2023 Yeah... Wasn't Bautista also not granted permission to play for the DR in the WBC one year? Yeah he had some wrist issues in 2012 including a season-ending surgery. Didn’t play in the WBC 2013, though DR ended up winning
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted January 13, 2023 Author Posted January 13, 2023 Will make the this year's insane deals look small Smaller pool of high end free agents. These two will stand head and shoulders above anyone. Also Machado when he presumably opts out I think Ohtani starts at 12 years 45 per year (540m total) and goes up from there. It would not surprise me to see him end up with a 600 million dollar deal next offseason.

Ray Verified Member Posted January 14, 2023 Posted January 14, 2023 Soto agreed to $23M Ohtani and Soto both likely to hit free agency after this season..... Ohtani is, but Soto won’t be until after the 2024 season. Upcoming free agency class is looking a little thin. Ohtani, Machado, and that’s kinda it.

Merrifield could be, they have an 18 mil mutual option but just an 850k buyout. Gurriel Jr… Winker Bader Berlinger Teoscar JD Martinez Yeah, not exactly a load of top star power past Machado and Ohtani.

Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted January 14, 2023 Posted January 14, 2023 Was reading on a Yankee site that they came very close to trading for Varsho. I knew they were in the mix, but not that it ended up being close to going the other way. That is worth a lot in itself, keeping him away from the Yankees and giving them plus D and a left handed bat with power at Yankee stadium 81 times a year.

Yeah, Varsho would absolutely crush in that shitbox of a stadium.

The Jays have made him literally cry before. Dude is emotionally stunted crybaby and has meltdowns all the time.

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2023 Posted January 15, 2023 I don't think I could come up with a more mediocre offseason if I tried. They've made a ton of moves and spent a lot of money but I'm not sure any of those guys are actually any good.
