If a guy is 95 wRC+ in the regular season, it would stand to reason he wouldn’t be as good post-season. Obviously there’s complete outliers with great hitter being terrible and terrible hitters being awesome.

 

But generally speaking the reasoning is pretty sound

Blue Jays could still add to the 2023 roster so we'll see what happens.

 

The lineup could be better in 2023 if Vlad returns to being a 5-6 WAR player. We need the Vlad of 2021 to return in 2023. Varsho with the bat will contribute solid power as well, similar to Teo or even better IMO.

 

Defensively, this team is greatly improved. Adding KK, Varsho to the outfield is a huge upgrade.

 

Rotation: I think is the same. Bassitt replaces Ryu. Lets see if the Jays add more depth, which I think will be the important factor.

 

Bullpen: Adding Swanson was nice, but overall I don't see much of a huge difference. Maybe one of Pearson or Merryweather break out and that could definitely change things.

 

Like Laika said earlier, this roster is more diverse and in better overall shape given the defensive upgrades.

I think the rotation and pen are slightly better+deeper going into 2023 but that's splitting hairs. Like, Ryu pre-2022 would project like Bassitt pre-2023 but Bassitt is not that kind of injury risk so that's an upgrade but seems cheap to account for it.

 

So I think they might be 2 or 2.5 wins better, on balance.

 

But I think the improvements can be described in different terms. I think they have built a more diverse team that should be more resilient to bad luck or negative events. Should be more consistent?

I think what you’re trying to get at (terribly…) is that power can play up in the post season because it’s harder to string together enough consecutive walks and non extra base hits off of elite starters and back end relievers, so if they do make mistakes it’s better to have power guys that can damage them with a long ball.

The only argument for elite hitters becoming disproportionately valuable once the playoffs begin would be something like:

 

1. There is more elite pitching

2. Elite pitching means elite stuff

3. Elite hitters are the only ones who can hit elite stuff

 

This seems true but there are lots of holes in it. Like, generally s***** hitters who make contact like Tapia can actually have a better chance at putting elite stuff in play than many good hitters. Also elite hitters are very diverse - some feast on bad pitching, some murder fastballs, some are plate discipline and spin recognition superheroes, etc.

 

If you want to roster an elite hitter specifically to win in the playoffs you probably want the guy who can turn around triple digits and hit the 98 mph fastball at the top of the zone.

 

But we are pretty far removed from what connorp has been saying for weeks which is a more generalized “offense is what matters in a short series”

Nah man. I was sharing advise because it’s really sad people can get duped. It’s not not just international. Haven’t you read the domestic scams sometimes? Match.com and that sort of thing. Like I’ve read about women giving men 100’s of thousands of dollars, and Vice versa.

 

I’ve never been scammed, no. It does happen where you’ll text with with someone for a week and then they’ll be like “I need money for something” and you just block it.

 

Truthfully, unlike most here, I became a nerd only in adulthood. I always dated the hottest girl in school kind of thing. While other people have essentially settled since they’ve been in junior high, I always got to pick from the best.

 

Now I’m a 40+ guy that has no business getting a smoking hot 20-something and even if I did, I couldn’t keep up with the lifestyle, bars etc. so the whole thing is a calculated decision. Make fun of me all you want, but compare some pics with what you guys have at home and you’d understand
