connorp Old-Timey Member Posted June 11, 2023 Posted June 11, 2023 His FA status seems almost cemented.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted June 11, 2023 Author Posted June 11, 2023 Isn't he controlled for one more Cots contracts has him as a FA for 2024, Sportrac has him as a super 2 getting Arb 4. Looks like cots is wrong since his service time at seasons end will still be less than 6 seasons. Weird they have a basic mistake like that
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted June 11, 2023 Author Posted June 11, 2023 Yeah but he has options no? He’s past 5 years of service time now, he could refuse being optioned to the minors at this point even if he does have options left.

Weird they have a basic mistake like that I stopped using Cots ages ago, Spotrac is much more accurate and easier to use

max silver Old-Timey Member Posted June 11, 2023 Posted June 11, 2023 4 years 156 days right now, I believe he can be optioned next season. We've gone over this recently, Cimber indeed has enough accumulated service time to decline being optioned to the minors.

max silver Old-Timey Member Posted June 11, 2023 Posted June 11, 2023 Was it Cimber we were talking about? Haha. Yeah it was Cimber. I recall he was just over the service time threshold earlier in the season. I wonder if he would decline being optioned to the minors given how poorly he's pitched this season. The club would likely be a lot better off with Jackson as he actually appears like he can retire major league hitters. Once Pop is ready for action that will be yet another challenge for Cimber to keep his position in the pen.

Buster Verified Member Posted June 11, 2023 Posted June 11, 2023 If I got to choose whether Atkins or Schneider gets fired, I'm going Atkins all day. This team has no minor league assets, nobody ready to take on opportunities when there are injuries. No assets to trade. A bunch of fat players. And not winning.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted June 11, 2023 Posted June 11, 2023 If they were saying he’s only allowed x pitches or x batters that tells me Schneider doesn’t make the calls at all and it comes from up top. I agree I would give Atkins the Dubas treatment (they’re eerily similar) and hand the reigns off to Click.

Would suck if Click ended up leaving before Atkins
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted June 11, 2023 Posted June 11, 2023 Hilarious how so many posters are saying Fire Atkins now when they were the ones defending him all this time!
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted June 11, 2023 Posted June 11, 2023 Click is not taking over Okay then hire someone else. Toronto is certainly a desirable location Shapiro has been great. Atkins is replaceable.
WryNGinger Verified Member Posted June 11, 2023 Posted June 11, 2023 Agreed on a lot of takes here regarding Atkins. Shapiro's patience with his lack of results is curious in a lot of ways. This past off-season they clearly veered off their previous course with a new direction of more defense and clearing out of some established players. Also the Montoyo -> Schneider ->? thing. Part of what they are doing seems like they are focusing on a chance at a title and part is giving a rookie manager a chance to prove what he can do... Not that they are diametrically opposed goals, just unlikely they can do both.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted June 11, 2023 Posted June 11, 2023 Hilarious how so many posters are saying Fire Atkins now when they were the ones defending him all this time! Yup.. Everyone was telling me to give the Atkins bashing / firing posts a rest the past three years. Look at them all now. Atkins and Dubas are of the same cloth, stat hoarding nerds who don't know a f***ing thing about building a championship roster. Anthopoulos has more pedigree in his baby toenail than Ross has in his whole arsenal. It's getting f***ing embarrassing.

BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted June 11, 2023 Posted June 11, 2023 Never understood the adulation for Atkin's performance. He has been ok. I seriously can't stand listening to one word out of his Ned Flanders sounding mouth, but performance wise I've been ambivalent to leaning "wouldn't miss him". Comments criticizing AA for selling the farm, and their talk of bringing up new "waves" of talent from their farm routinely to augment the roster cost effectively, defy credulity at this point. You can make a pretty credible "glass half empty" concerning case about where the team is at now and what the future looks like. Alas. Admittedly you can also spin something rosier. Time will tell.

AA has signed up all his young players to team friendly extensions, Atkins has only extended Berrios and Grichuk in his time here lol. He's failed to get Vladdy & Kirk to lose weight and fix their swings even with the best performance complex in the league. He's struggled developing pitching whether it be SPs or RPs. His pitching management decisions feeding into the clubhouse cost us games and make no sense to 100% of viewers and analysts.

The only way it can be spun rosier is if the Jays get some massive internal development and soon. If Orelvis is a top 50 prospect again, then that's a start. The way Atkins has built the team is the exact opposite of the sustainable talk that him and Shapiro were saying years ago. You don't build a sustainable winner by never extending any young talent, exclusively using expensive FA deals to fill holes, and swinging and missing on almost every draft since 2017. Atkins' one strength is building a solid MLB roster. He usually does well with trades and free agent signings (for the most part), but without the other parts of the equation, it's hard to see that strength being able to compensate for what he lacks. I think overall he's a solid GM but not one I'd miss if he were replaced. As long as it's Shapiro picking his replacement and not Ed Rogers.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted June 11, 2023 Posted June 11, 2023 AA's teams in 2015 and 2016 (roster wise) at least looked like World Series contenders. The Postseason runs under Atkins so far have been a disappointment (only 2022) and you get the sense even with this group if they make it this season won't go on a deep run.
