I'm going back to the top of my Jansen hill.

Since May 1st of 2021, f*** the SSS, leads MLB catchers with 350+ PA at a 144 wRC+ and is 8th in fWAR at 4.5 (ahead of Kirk). He has 45ish% of the PA of the leaders. If somehow he stays healthy there is a good chance he is the best offensive catcher in baseball in 2023 and a 5+ win player.

After the Moreno trade, I would look to extend Jansen this offseason before he does just that and prices himself out at Realmuto levels.

Extend the man. 4/40M buying out his next two years of arb. Two years of free agency for 20M. Dan’s a team guy let’s get it done

With FA prices, I think it would take more. Would you do 4/52?

I think we could get him for 5/40. He’s projected for only 3.7M next year. His current career earnings is extremely low, and he didn’t get a bonus.

That would be buying his two free agent years at 20M each. That’s next off season’s price.

Wouldn’t he get like 7/10 in arby 2 and 3 remaining you think?

Math error on my end. I meant more like :

4/42 would be 7/10/13/13

Having 2 Catchers is “cool” but not that practical. That was where the “trade two” philosophy came from.

Come playoffs, one C can start every game. Having 2 limits what you can do with the DH in terms on matchups. So having a little more position flexibility is better

Even during the season when Springer DHs 15 games and all the other times the Jays give a position player a day off on the field, one of the C doesn’t get in

Seems wise for a non-spend heavy team to allocate the money somewhere else. Also, a Jansen extension will be there next year or they want it. If Jansen has a legit year and Kirk takes a step back, it may make more sense. I think Captain is legit though. We’ll see

I always really liked this Jansen guy.

Sure he has a glass body and him being legally blind presents it's challenges but he's as strong as an Ox so if he manages to run into a fastball he can really put a charge into the ball. He's much better than that 160 pound slap hitting prospect we just gave up.

I see what you are doing, and I don't like it.

This would be the cherry on top of a great off season. My wish list at the start was:

1- Kirk or Moreno for a long term Arizona OF.

2- Non tender Tapia to free up salary.

3- Trade Teo and Gurriel to free up salary and get something back.

4- No QO to Stripling. Use the $20 to get someone better.

5- Get 1 or 2 more good BP pieces.

6- Extend Jansen.

FO and I have been on the same wavelength. They ignored all the mediocre OF trade targets and went after the right long-term solutions. Love it!

Pretty impressive 5/6 so far - and pretty specific wishes. Just need the Jano extension for a perfect off-season.

10 million over the next 2 years is probably a decent estimate for Danny's arb years(3.7 projected this year, 6.3 seems reasonable for 2024). Does 3x10 tacked on get it done(40/5 total), or would 4 x 12.5 be required(60/6 total).

Jansen can and will get more if he stays healthy and plays well, but turning down 40 to 60 million dollars in hopes that happens with history might be something he'd rather not do.

Jansen won’t be extended imo. As good as he is, his money would end up eating into the other areas of need and they’ll still have a completely capable catcher in Kirk. In the next offseason, Jansen will be the Teo of this off-season, he’ll be the guy they move to save a few million and plug a different hole.

This line of thought makes 1 assumption, continued health and productivity of Kirk.

Extending Jansen at a reasonable price gives the Blue Jays more flexibility, not less. You can easily trade him for even more return if that is needed. In an age where teams are paying Vazquez $30 over 3 years, and Hedges $5M for a year, it is easy to imagine how you can get premium returns for 3 years of Jansen at $12M a year. Extending Jansen also allows the Jays to have a safety net if Kirk becomes less productive for whatever reason.

How much do you guys think Jansen can bench press? I bet you he could put up 350 easy.

Yeah but he'd probably end up on the DL for doing it. :-)

Does he have an agent? If not I bet we could slip some fine print past him in the contract due to his poor eyesight. Like maybe tack a cheap team option on there or something like that.

There's no way they're planning to go from 3 catchers to just Kirk within 2 years. There's not a whole lot in the upper minors at C either besides Zach Britton who, like Varsho is a OF/C. I also don't anticipate Varsho being the backup catcher/OF in years 3 and 4. He's too valuable in the OF to be playing 30% of games at catcher. Kirk is good but catcher is the 1 spot where you need 2 guys and while the 2nd one doesn't have to be Jansen caliber, to go from 3 to needing to sign some s***** backup catcher in 2025 doesn't seem like something this front office would plan for. Jansen might not sign it,but they've absolutely discussed internally trying to get Jansen extended.

If having 2 star Catchers was something that made a lot of sense, other teams would be seeking it out. It’s not practical. That doesn’t mean you just give one away but there’s no need to cry if it goes to 1

It makes sense when your one catcher is a rolly polly.

This. Also when the catcher you're signing is one of the best hitters on the team. You can give him reps at 1B and DH and he would still be very productive.

Too bad Kirk is like 5ft nothing. If he was like 6ft you think he would also get some reps at 1B when Vlad needs to DH
