I missed the game, which play was he referring to when he said "“Vladdy flat-out needs to run harder … that’s inexcusable.” Adds: “He’s still young, he’ll be fine … but you’ve got to leave no margin for error.”

Vladdy hit a laser down the left field line and started a home run trot on the way to first. It hit the warning track four feet short of the fence so he had to turn on the jets to make it to second. Hicks gunned him down at second easily. Totally embarrassing. Also killed what looked to be a rally that inning.

It wasn't a lase. He missed it. 92 off the bat, 330 feet. It was down the line which meant Hicks couldn't get it.

I think Vlad has some serious character issues. Becoming less of a clown would be a good first step in the right direction.

Give him a break. Vladdy hits so few flyballs he probably has trouble judging them. Even though it was off the end of the bat and only 90 mph, he was so proud he hit it at 27 degrees that he celebrated. (even his homeruns are usually like 18-21)

He missed it, but didn't realize he missed it. If he hit a line drive down the line he would have hustled, he almost always does to get a double. He thought it was a no doubter.

As far as baserunning goes... yeah Toronto is like bottom 4 in the MLB.

Thing is, 3 of the top 4 teams aren't even playoff teams. Baserunning is a good thing to be good at, but if your offense as a whole sucks it doesnt really matter that much. However, if you already have a great offence like the Jays, every baserunning blunder is magnified since youre taking outs off the board with hitters in the box that can do damage.

It hit the top of the fence. Like one foot from being gone.

yeah he thought it was gone. No one said otherwise.

baserunning tweet

Vlad + Gurriel + Kirk are like -15 combined, just the three of them.

Yeah Vlad is a bonehead but for the most part these guys are just SLOW. They can't do much better at baserunning.

The guys underperforming on BsR are Teoscar, Bo, Tapia, and Espinal. In my opinion.

Teoscar, Bo, and Espinal are like -6 combined and there is no reason for them to not be at least neutral.

And Tapia is only +1. He should be +3.

Those four are the players who reasonable should all be doing better in the BsR category.

Player ; Sprint Speed Percentile ; BsR ; Conclusion

Springer ; 75th ; +4.6 ; smart

Chapman ; 78th ; +2.8 ; good

Biggio ; 80th ; +2 ; good

Jansen ; 53rd ; 0 ; as expected

Tapia ; 72nd ; +1 ; could be better

Bichette ; 52nd ; -1.4 ; could be better but he is slower this year! yikes

Espinal ; 42nd ; -2 ; could be better but he is slower this year! yikes

Hernandez ; 83rd ; -2.3 ; this is horrible and unforgiveable

Gurriel ; 48th ; -4 ; he could be better

Vlad ; 34th ; -4.6 ; as expected

Kirk ; 3rd ; -7 ; as expected

Exactly

Poor judgement

Same ball off Springer's bat and Springer is full tilt running until he either sees it clear the fence or sees it fall short and into play

That's what you want to see as a a manager from every player

What is this for? It hits the fence then the warning track. Look at the video on mlb.com

It's higher quality. You can slow down at the point of contact.

I remember looking at sprint speed in feet per second and noticed that Espinal is barely faster than Vladdy.

Yeah. I was just going by memory from last night.

this is my house of mistakes!

Fuk. I mean walk the talk. Saying "my house" and "this year is the movie" is fine by me. Any decent fan won't expect you to hit a walk off every time you get a chance. Thats ok. Its baseball.

But enough as a team with giving the opposition extra outs making our own on the base paths so much...and hustle 100%...especially now when home field is at stake every play. The end is in sight. There is no acceptable excuse, and the "they're young" line is a joke. ITs easier to hustle when you are younger. Trust me I know lol.

Light went off in my head last night while thinking of the simplest way to get Vlad to be elite again

"swing less"

that's all they need to say!

simply put he is swinging too much

If he swung less, a bunch of positive things would flow out

it might not even be about pitch recognition or swing plane or any of that more specific stuff

just swing less, bud

watch Aaron Judge this year (42.6% swing rate)

just never swing

swinging is bad

just stand there, most of the time

But what if I like swing wooden stick

Is the relationship extremely strong? No. It's baseball. There are different ways to be good. You can swing a lot and be very good. You can be passive and be below average at hitting.

BUT it is clear that the uber-elite hitters swing less. And it is clear that if you swing a lot it's hard to be an uber-elite hitter.

That's because swinging is bad.

This is just qualified hitters in 2022 by the way. Feel free to expand the sample.

From a different thread a while back about Vladdy…

Someone (Laika?) posted an article on here a while back about the benefits of not swinging, or something along those lines. There is a direct correlation to hitting pitches up in the zone and barrel % and LA. I'm sure the Jays' hitting gurus are aware that anything low in the zone and Vladdy tops the ball resulting in him being the gidp king. Being selective to pitches up in the zone may result in more strike outs for Vladdy but the benefits would out weigh the cost. Why doesn't he make the adjustment? Who knows, but I bet he is aware of all this. Hitting is just really hard.
