The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted September 2, 2022 Posted September 2, 2022 Didn't we have to clear one to re-add Bradley Zimmer? They had an open spot at that time.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 2, 2022 Posted September 2, 2022 Lawrence is likely going to get a spot start against the Pirates which means during the Oriole's doubleheader we don't need to call anyone up from AAA for that. Double headers against Orioles and Rays coming up Need an extra guy for sure
Ehjays Verified Member Posted September 2, 2022 Posted September 2, 2022 No, I never said that. But you said they literally make the team worse. That's dumb. No, thats not what I said, don't change my words, I said One could argue after this call up, our team is worse. Its not dumb, they are both brutal, s***, garbage etc.. Pop and Moreno would have helped, not these two, especially Zimmer. Anyway, lets keep an eye on these call ups and see how they help on our drive to a championship.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted September 2, 2022 Posted September 2, 2022 Which of Pop or Moreno are going to start the extra game? If you used Pop as an opener for 2 innings, that's probably how long Lawrence is going to last in a spot start.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted September 2, 2022 Posted September 2, 2022 Which of Pop or Moreno are going to start the extra game? If that's the intent, why do that now? He could just be called up to pitch in a DH on that day.

Smart play is to have Lawrence pitch against the Pirates, they have the 2nd worst offense in the league. That way we have 4 of our main starters for the Baltimore series.

mellowgold Verified Member Posted September 2, 2022 Posted September 2, 2022 So what are we looking at pitching-wise for the Pirates and O's series? Manoah tonight, which lines him up for Wednesday's finale against the O's. You definitely want Gausman in the O's series. He last pitched Tuesday, so he likely gets one of the games on Monday on five days rest. Berrios last pitched Monday, and although he's been completely unreliable, you probably still want him vs. the O's over our other terrible options, so does he get the other Monday game on six days rest? Stripling last pitched Sunday so he probably goes Saturday vs the Pirates which leaves us a Lawrence/bullpen game on Sunday. So I guess White gets Tuesday vs. Baltimore? Not ideal, but there is literally nobody else. Vs. Pittsburgh: Manoah/Stripling/Lawrence Vs. Baltimore: Berrios/Gausman/White/Manoah Does that look right?

Where'd I say that? Has Lawrence been announced as the SP against the Bucs... I'm not assuming anything.
mellowgold Verified Member Posted September 2, 2022 Posted September 2, 2022 https://www.fangraphs.com/roster-resource/probables-grid Has there been an official announcement? Looks like they're just plugging in whoever's turn it is that day.

Whether it hurts or not is semantics. It doesn't help. Even if you use Zimmer as strictly a pinch runner/defensive replacement, they already have JBJ on the roster. They don't need two of the same thing. But this is a team that voluntarily will give Tapia 400 PA in a season they want to contend, so I'm not sure they even realize that the guys they called up stink.

The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted September 2, 2022 Posted September 2, 2022 Zimmer over Moreno is idiotic. Moreno should still be getting everyday at bats. It's not like he is tearing the cover off the ball either. He has an OPS under .800 in the minors, and struggled when he was called up earlier this season.
bones10 Old-Timey Member Posted September 2, 2022 Posted September 2, 2022 The difference between Zimmer and Moreno in a bench role for a month is probably negligible the guys whk we used all year have to get it done like they're projected to. It's annoying that the teams depth is so piss poor we have to start a mid 30s career minor leaguer in September but it's still the right move to line up better against the Orioles.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted September 2, 2022 Posted September 2, 2022 Hmm. Kind of scratching my head here. We seem to have a lot of really mediocre players taking up a lot of this roster. This "wave" has been more of a garden hose trickle. JBJ Zimmer Tapia (has turned 334 PAs and those OF starts into -0.4 WAR) Merrifield Biggio Lawrence White Kooch Interchangeable s***. Biggio has been useful. Merrifield should be useful but has sucked for us pretty much so far. Not everyone is going to be a 2 WAR player on a roster.I get that but this volume of s*** depth, no matter the role or use, seems pretty unimpressive.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted September 2, 2022 Posted September 2, 2022 Lots of time for this discussion probably but Chappy's 122 wRC+ is the same as his career now. With his D it makes him a valuable asset to extend beyond '23. Or does it? Has his offence really rebounded 18 and 19 levels or is this a mirage? His D metrics this year don't match the eye test, or he would have better than 3.4 WAR.

JBJ Zimmer Tapia Merrifield Biggio Between these 5 you could probably squeeze out an above average major league CFer over the course of the game. Imagine a player with the CF defense of JBJ/Zimmer, and the strong side splits of Biggio/Tapia/Whit at the plate. It's 2 elite defensive CFers and 3 pinch hit options, one righty and two lefties. Start JBJ and then pinch hit for him as early as his 1st AB of the game if the situation calls for it. Then just keep subbing based on the situation until the game ends. If you played it right you could get 3 to 5 innings of JBJ and Zimmer CF defense without either recording an AB. lol

As we saw in 2020 (and some of 2021) if he loses the bat speed he becomes a much worse hitter. It just feels to me like he is a guy that would age badly with the bat. Give him the QO in 2023, if he takes it that’s fine.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted September 2, 2022 Posted September 2, 2022 Lawrence is just a AAA innings eater guy. He can pitch in garbage time and eat up 3-4 innings. When he does that he can be sent back down.

He'd get plenty of playing time down the stretch, can run, hit, spell our catchers defensively, plenty of reasons to have him over Zimmer.
