Solaxys Old-Timey Member Posted August 18, 2022 Posted August 18, 2022 lets sweep the Yankees. Jomboy was showing off some stats on twitter the other day saying the Yankees have been very suspectiable to the slider with recent injuries to key players. Manoah, Berrios and Gausman hopefully can take advantage of that. White is pitching as well who also has a kick ass slider.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 18, 2022 Posted August 18, 2022 Stripling should be ahead of Berrios (at this moment) but I doubt they’d actually do it. If the Jays make the Wild Card game and it goes to game 3, I think the team gives the ball to Berrios. Atkins "I feel great every time Berrios goes out there" Interview last week
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted August 18, 2022 Posted August 18, 2022 Atkins "I feel great every time Berrios goes out there" Interview last week He must have been high during that interview.
AMS528 Verified Member Posted August 18, 2022 Posted August 18, 2022 I think absolutely he should. And... probably would? I think the only justification they could have for Berrios starting, outside of a strong turnaround over the next one and a half months, is that he has a good track record and its important to show confidence in a guy you just signed to a massive long term deal less than a year ago.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted August 18, 2022 Posted August 18, 2022 Atkins "I feel great every time Berrios goes out there" Interview last week Exactly why i just cant listen to his phony pablum. Has he said the same about Kooch and his 3/36? Are we going to take some risk and buy a bit high on Strip extending him? Whats it going to take? 3/30 ?? At this point at least he is definitely more reliable than Berrios. Wouldnt it be nice if a miracle happened and Kooch became another in a long line of failed starters who wakes up in the pen and becomes a wipe out pen lefty. Hope springs eternal.

I wouldn't mind a small extension for Stripling. I'm thinking they have another version of him in White.

Interview's are stupid to begin with. Nobody should listen to any of them and if you do, don't believe anything that's said. Comments like he's high or phony are dumb because obviously he's just giving you the PC answer. Strip has been amazing this year and it's become obvious why Atkins wanted him. I'd certainly be speaking with his agent about an extension, but it's going to be tough the way he's pitching now. This will be his last time to get paid and I suspect he'll want to get every last dollar he can. I understand the frustration with Berrios, but even the most pessimistic fan must have some confidence that he'll return to his 2017-2021 form at some point, although he may need the offseason to correct it (his xFIP of 4.17 this year is already in line with his previous success). He's the right age, there's no apparent injury and his track record is too long to not be optimistic. But for this year, it's Strip over Berrios for sure (baring some major turn around over the next 6 weeks)
Laika Community Moderator Posted August 18, 2022 Posted August 18, 2022 Strip found a plus changeup and is throwing it 25% of the time with good results it's making his FB more effective too, for obvious reasons he has FIVE usable pitches now: 4S, CH, SL, CU, and the sinker he doesn't throw a whole lot at 32 years old with a spotty track record for health and innings he should not command big money but he is positioning himself extremely well for free agency would love to have him stick around. kind of insane that he probably walks and gets an AAV at or less than Kikuchi's for the next couple of years while Toronto may end up releasing Kikuchi mid 2023... sigh

Mostly they the equivalent of hockey interviews "Get more pucks on the net - take it one shift at a time - keep the puck down low - try to keep it simple and help the team) Mostly I skip them for reasons a chimp would know and you allude to. I find his a particular phony variety of GM speak. There is lots of GM speak he could source that doesn't bury Berrios, but doesn't sound like 100% complete f***ing ********. Thats just my view. Berrios? Ya, sure. I hope he rebounds of course. Mostly about FB command. I think Eno Sarris has Strip's change ranked #1 in the AL now

Could Atkins improve on it? Sure, but that's super low on the priority list for me.

What's wrong with admitting "the results haven't been there in some of starts this year but we have the utmost confidence that he and Pete Walker can figure it out and get him back to top tier starter we know he is" (and I paid top prospects and 100s of millions of dollars for - inner voice) Does it really matter what he says? No Does it annoy me as a smart fan that he makes it sound like he's unaware of how mediocre Berrios has been? Yes Does he know how bad Berrios has been? I certainly hope so.

But for this year, it's Strip over Berrios for sure (baring some major turn around over the next 6 weeks) Geez man get a sense of humour. Stripling with the Dodgers was always a decent back-end starter who could work between the rotation and bullpen and provide a team with rotation depth if someone went down and not hurt the team by being in the rotation for a month or two. He definitely has earned the opportunity to be a full time starter moving forward after the season he is having. Don't make it seem like Atkins pulled a miracle by trading for the guy. I'm all for giving him a reasonable extension for 2-3 years as a No. 4 or 5 starter, though nothing crazy. I bet if Stripling was on another team, you would be saying his season has been a fluke thus far. Your Mike Wilner homer side is showing well yet again!

jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted August 18, 2022 Posted August 18, 2022 I'm totally down for some more Chicken Strip!!! Could be the next Marco Estrada for the Jays. If you can get 2.5 WAR from Strip every season, that's great!

It has to be command, you've mentioned this to me before, the ball leaks over the plate too much, hence all the bombs.

GM speak has little to do with the catch all meme "PC", in my view. Some are better at communicating with the public/fans that others and it does help. Lots of other metrics to judge Atkins by, but thats a whole other discussion.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted August 18, 2022 Posted August 18, 2022 So is Kooch going to be the long man? We could use him in lower leverage spots where he can work on things I suppose. But if he can barely get through 3 or 4 innings as a starter I'm not sure he'll do any better as a long man. What if they just let him dial it up for an inning at a time? Could he succeed as a high-K high-BB reliever?

I want to see him as a one inning RP, dialing it up to 98 I think they want to keep him stretched out though But on the other hand what's the point of that? If he starts any more games this year the team is f***ed.

If that flops revisit it again in the offseason.
