Statistically he’s a very good 3SP borderline 2 SP in his career. Six/18 poor quality starts doesn’t change that.

Statistically perhaps; I don't know if a 4 ERA guy (career wise) is good for a 3rd in the AL East though (at least not this year)

I think he's a fine 4th, but the contract doesn't justify that he's a 4th.

Can you elaborate? You think based on his performance this year that he'll be a solid #4 for the Jays this year? or you think if he returns to prior form that he's just a #4 pitcher? or you think ideally he's our 4th starter?

He gives up 2-3 runs on average in his career over 6IP consistently. There aren’t many 3 SP that can boast that. I do get the ALE argument when we’re watching the Rays seem to pull aces out of their ass every two months and with the Yankees rotation this season. But there are probably five to seven teams in all of baseball who have as good a pitcher as Berrios in the 3 spot. And maybe four of those that have better when fully healthy. Obviously the numbers this season don’t agree but I’m thinking those poor starts were outliers for Berrios.

For me, I think the context of starting pitching (or what 'slot' they should supposedly to go into) should come down to what your immediate opponents are fielding (might change next year cause its going to be a balanced schedule)

Your top 3 for Yankees are Cole (3.05), Cortes (2.74), Severino (3.11); all with 1 WHIP and under 4 FIP (only Cortes is above 3.5 FIP, at 3.62 FIP)

Your top 3 for Rays are McC (1.73), Kluber (3.58), Rasmussen (3.11); all with 1.1 WHIP or less and under 4 FIP (only Rasmussen is above 3.3 FIP, at 3.7 FIP)

Sox are injured, I don't even know what their starting rotation is going to be once everyone comes back lol - Sale, Wacha, Eovaldi would be their top 3 I guess?

That'd make Severino (I think Cortes but we'll just go with stats), Kluber, and Eovaldi (3.16 ERA, 4.53 FIP, 1.1 WHIP) the 3rd starters?

---

Berrios' 5 best years (so ignoring this year): 3.74 ERA, 3.79 FIP, 1.15 WHIP

He's close (at least in a sense better than Eovaldi) and I remember Twins fans saying that when he's off, he gets blown out - so maybe he does get QS with most games, but the one or two odd starts, he completely unravels.

So if he gets to that level again (where he reduces his FB rate and increases his GB rate back to norms, HH% drops back to norms - his HR/FB is up 4%, oof), he can be a definite 3rd.

This year, I am not sure yet. He needs to put up a string of QS to even sway the needle. He's probably the 4th this year at this moment (I trust Stripling more than I trust Berrios).

Also, keep in mind, his confidence completely dives into the abyss when he's crumbling. He looks lost and can't seem to reel it back in.

He isn't like Kikuchi where he straight up doesn't trust his stuff anymore, but when he's giving up hits/runs/walks, he starts taking ages between each pitch like he's just not sure what to do.

Maybe we do need someone like Jansen with him to anchor him when stuff is going south, but that trepidation would suck as your #3 in postseason.

His average release point was higher than his season average, but it's not like it was his max this season or anything.

I don't really see anything popping off the page, just a bunch of tiny improvements. Release point was not super low, his zone% was solid... the only things jumping up that I see were chase rates and in zone whiff rates but those are results not causes.

I agree with the above poster.

Tiny improvements + a swing happy opponent.

I actually thought he hung several curveballs early on and was perhaps lucky not to give up a homer.

Sarris was saying on their podcast that drop off

release point can indicate that someone is carrying an injury sometimes. It would make sense that someone like berrios who is never out could be practiced at playing through issues that would sideline other players.

On the Jansen/Moreno thing. I think that trading Jansen now at this point can’t be done. We need to win games right now with urgency. I also think you can’t trade Moreno now. I’d want to see if the power will come back the further he gets away from his thumb injury.

It doesn't seem like the manager makes the line-up, given Tapia is still in there.

At least he is hitting 9th.

and Bo still batting 2nd. Maybe John isn't the savior?

Fire 'em all!

Like the GDTs here, we make a rotation of every single poster here making the lineup card and when the team loses, the person who made the lineup card gets banned.

It is going to take some time before he can get his fingerprints on the team.

Maybe Schneider just wants to give that lineup a chance with him as skipper and everything to do with Charlie is water under the bridge

It's actually interesting now that Schneider is getting a shot at the big club as interim manager. He played his entire minor league career with the Jays (after saying f*** you to the tigers when they tried to draft him) and as soon as it was over, signed on as the jays minor league catching instructor. Worked his way up to manager at Vancouver (short season A at the time and at the time was the youngest manager in Jays history at any level). In fact he's been the manager at every level in the Jays system except AAA, and won championships at 3 of those levels.

This has Blue Jays success story written all over it.

LMAOOOOOO 10 Royals players arent vaxxed and wont be coming to Toronto for the 4 game series lololololol

All the makings of a trap series.

That's a beta move. An Alpha comes in and makes it known there's a new Sheriff in Town. Bench Vlad for showing up the coaches last night and his s***** performance overall. Bat Bo 8th, Gurriel 2nd, stop giving Kirk days off and tell the starter (in front of the whole team) he's expected to go AT LEAST 7 innings tonight because the bullpen is s***. Take away all electronics from the clubhouse and any amenities they have. Cold showers only until they start winning. Burn the HR jacket too.

We need a man to manage this team.

I dont think he should burn the jacket. He should bring a s***** straw scarecrow into the dugout that just happens to look like Montoyo, maybe with some bongos attached, hang it in the corner, and put the HR jacket on it.

Then DARE some fool to take the jacket off it and see what happens.

So Benintendi is not a trade option for the Jays. Would have fit perfectly. Need a LH bat to avoid Tapia getting 550 plate appearances.

Benintendi is an outfielder and Toronto has three starting outfielders AND the DH spot occupied most of the time

Holy s***, that list.

Taylor, Singer, Keller, Dozier, Melendez, Merrifield, Benintendi.

What the f***.

Thank God Barlow is not on that list; a prime target for us

I think in most scenarios us acquiring an OFer would mean we are trading one of Teo/Gurriel for pitching.

The player to benefits most from the way the Jays use the DH spot is Tapia, who is awful. If Benintendi were getting those plate appearances instead, it would be a pretty dramatic upgrade. The Jays simply don’t like using both catchers at the same time often enough. Replacing Tapia with a LH OF would be a nice fit.

Royals save 830k USD for all the players not coming over to Toronto and instead going on Restricted List.

All-Star outfielder Andrew Benintendi, first baseman Hunter Dozier, second baseman Whit Merrifield, outfielder Michael A. Taylor and outfielder Kyle Isbel all will miss the trip. Ditto for catchers MJ Melendez and Cam Gallagher and pitchers Brad Keller, Brady Singer and Dylan Coleman.

Guess that closes the door on a Benintendi trade, he's one of the guys not vaxxed.

That lead-from-the-front swinging dick personality is exactly what the administration hates the most. Gibbons, Donaldson, Martin, Pillar, Anthopoulos, etc. all got traded or canned. Some of them left on very bad terms.

Schneider will likely keep a low profile.
