This is a team friendly extension. Manager contracts don't mean much for the team anyway, they can easily be fired. If the team is under achieving part way through this year, I think he'd still be on the hot seat or potentially fired. There are expectations this season.

He was a lame duck heading into this season, so expected this to happen. The good news is it's only through 2023, and the club options make it easy to move on from him. We just have to hope the team is talented enough to compensate for him.

This whole you can't have a manager enter the season without a contract for next year is dumb. What's he going to do? Dumb stuff on purpose? Him trying to do dumb stuff on purpose might be better anyway since things Montoyo think are dumb is probably the correct decision.

The beautiful thing about this is that he's going to be somewhere between Bobby Cox and John Gibbons in terms franchise managerial record and possibly on par with Gaston in terms of playoff accomplishments once this is all said and done. In 2024 this whole board will be like how Olerud is with Gaston today.

To put a positive twist on this. Lots of people thought Cito was a terrible manager too... Justifiably. They won despite him. Twice.

I guess all there is to do now is hope that he somehow gets considerably better at his job... Dare to dream, folks!

What exactly makes him so terrible at his job?

That out of a bunch of terrible bullpen options in the first half of the year, he picked the terrible ones and a terrible result ensued?

When young guys were still young and developing, he gave more plate appearances to veterans so to manage their workload? Which for the most part, wasn't really an issue last year.

That once in a while he pinch hit and bunted at what armchair quarterbacks would deem inappropriate times?

In the meantime, all the young guys are developing on track. There are no Travis Sniders, no Shawn Greens, no Kelvim Escobars, no Kyle Drabeks. No one is requesting a trade. Everyone seems to be getting along. The closest to a bust right now is Pearson. I can't remember the last time the Jays had so few busts.

This board has group think where it nitpicks all these small things but fails to see the bigger picture. What were the Jays expectations heading into 2021? IIRC something like 20-30% chance of making the playoffs and low-80s in wins. They busted through that. We don't know how much or how little of an impact Montoyo had on the player development and mindset of the team. But based on results despite the difficulties this team had to overcome with the bullpen, they well surpassed expectations last year. Chances are Montoyo didn't have a negative effect on that part of the team, which is worth way more than the occasional 1980s-stlye managerial brain fart.

He was not so bad last year and is probably getting better but early on in his tenure he made a bunch of boneheaded tactical decisions and no i can't remember any of them

And I know that people will pass off a lot of what has gone right with the team (or not gone wrong) as credit to player development and the front office as opposed to any contribution Montoyo may have had. But if the front office is generally making good decisions on that front, is it not fair to give them the benefit of the doubt that they are making a good decision to roll with Montoyo for year 4 and beyond?

The four most consistent complaints on this board over the last couple of years have been: Montoyo, Buck/Tabler, Grichuk, and the dumpster fire BP. With the latter two being traded and improved starting late last season. Imagine being a Mets fan or Angels fan or Pirates fan or Rockies fan coming to this board and seeing most of the whining being about the manager and the broadcast team lol.

If Charlie starts collecting -5 in WAR by giving .280 on base guys a few hundred at bats then he'll reach Cito level. Until then bunting at the wrong time, isn't the same as... I don't know. Say giving Grichuk and Panik 500 at bats each and Socrates Brito 200, and say Tapia has a .250 on base and gets 300 at bats... mean while say Biggio and Kirk are getting and base and performing well, but Charlie sits them regularly... that would be Cito level, and I just don't see Charlie ever doing that.

My friend, sweet baby Jesus we are so blessed to have your sober second thought and relentless glass half full optimism on the Board. Have you thought about becoming a member of the Senate? Irrational anger at Buntoyo helps get me through low points in a season lol. Let me have my fun.

I'm uniquely positioned as Conservative but also hardcore optimist. I think it's a good place to be.

I mean he could still get fired if the team under performs. Not that worried about it. If it was a 5-year extension I would have been worried.

Cito: Gotta play that kid Ruben Sierra and the kid Brumfield, and Joe Carter is slowing in the outrield so trade our 57 WAR** first basemen and put him at 1st base.

Charlie equivalent would be

Gotta play that kid Dexter Fowler and the kid Socrates Brito and Grichkuk is slowin' in the outfield so trade our young first basemen put him at first.

** (Cito didn't know Oleruds final WAR total but he went 8-3-3 then sat for Brumfield)

Cito - that kid Hentgen is lookin' sharp... gonna see what happens if we let him go 140 pitches a game, 265 innings. Kid looks good.

Point is I'm pretty convinced Cito Gaston was a narcosist who cost the team 5 wins a year and stunted the development of many young players.

You often hear guys say how awesome it was to play for Cito. Those guys are named Pat Tabler or Juan Samuel or Kevin Millar who got 250 plate appearances and a final pay check because of Cito. I'm sure he seemed awesome to them, not so much to Green, Olerud, Snider and probably even Delgado who missed a few hundred at bats from 94-98 when he was obviously ready, got sent down after slumps.... compare to Guerrero who was given chance to work out of slumps.

Anyway even if Charlie is a complete idiot, there is zero chance he'll have the opportunity to cost the team any wins at all.

Charlie bunts, costing team 1/100 of a win. Shapiro and Atkins... lol... good old old Charlie.

Charlie suggest hitting Tapia 1st and giving him 550 at bats. NO. Charlie not allowed to this. Charlie suggests letting Gaussman get 10 complete games... no Charlie not allowed to do that either. Charlie suggest making Reese McGuire full time catcher cuz he looks good back there. Not allowed to do this either.

In 2022 Charlie won't be allowed to do anything stupid and impactful, only things stupid and irrelevant.

to be honest , it i am fine with this contract. really just a year extension, a year the club has no issue paying if they feel he needs to go, and the rest is club options.

cant complain about that.

Remember in 2008 when old ass Cito Gaston took over for Gibbons? Cito went 51-37 after the team started 35-39.

Cito could manage with the best of them. What a legend. Definitely deserving of the Jays Mt. Rushmore.

I’m on a cell so not easy to highlight what I object to but one is not like the other. S Greene wasn’t a total flop

The bunting, especially the keeping it on with 2 strikes crap, needs to end.

Oh Jesus. I had forgotten about the two strike bunting
