Cool story from Blue Jays third base and infield coach Luis Rivera on the type of teammate Matt Chapman is. On his first day with the team, "he already told me, 'if you feel like I need to help any of the kids that are here I'm here for them,'" relayed Rivera. "That's great."

I love elite defense. It's going to be such a joy to watch and such a departure from cringing every time a ball was hit that way when Biggio was playing 3rd.

And, as an added bonus, Biggio grades out as an above average 2B!

Also nice when Espinal is at 2nd, He has great hands as well.

A return to 25-30 HR Chapman would be the best thing in a while....

He hit 27 HR last year. It’s a pretty safe bet that if he remains healthy he’ll at least reach that range. What we really need is for him to return to his strikeout rates from 2018-19.

Worst post of the week LOL

I was about to respond to this too but the thread got locked for some reason lol.

He put up 27 in a massive park in Oakland. He'll get to 30 in his sleep as long as he stays healthy.

Wonder where Charles slots Chapman into the lineup. I’d personally like him hitting somewhere 5-7 until he’s swinging the bat like pre-hip surgery. But wouldn’t be at all surprised if he’s slotted between 2-4 opening day.

Good OBP, should bat 6th.

Matt Chapman Rejected 10-Year, $150MM Offer After 2019 Season

March 19th, 2022 at 3:16pm CST • By TC Zencka

Before hip surgery knocked Matt Chapman out of the 2020 playoffs, the A’s had offered their superstar third baseman a 10-year extension worth $150MM, writes The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal. After the hip injury, rejecting that offer was a decision that caused some second-guessing on Chapman’s part. Some two years after Oakland attempted to extend Chapman, the offer exists only as a comparative tool.

Charlie will play Grichuk instead of Kirk though

Can't blame Chapman and Semien for turning down what the A's were offering that year...

Yeah that's a pretty awful ten year deal for a player that was on the type of run Chapman was experiencing at the time.

And they wanted Semien to take 1 year 18 but with most of it deferred over 10 years or something stupid

I would do this lineup to start:

Springer

Kirk

Vladdy

Bo

Teo

Gurriel

Chapman

Biggio/Espinal

Jansen

And if Chapman takes off, you hit him 2nd and move Kirk to 6th and bump Gurriel to 7th.

Chapman will bat 2nd because he's the new toy and Charlie can't help himself.

Yeah, my guess is Chapman bats 2nd this year. He's essentially replacing Semien on the team, so for lineup consistency from last season, Chuck is going to put him at 2. Of course, that wouldn't be bad at all if we get 2018-19 Chappy. If we get the 2020-21 version, then not so good.

He's probably going to be gone after his contract but if he regains his form I hope they re-sign him. I don't have the data on this but it seems like great defensive third basemen keep being great defensively into their late 30s.

Well, in our era there was Rolen and Beltre and that was very true for both.

Call that small sample size or recency bias, but some common sense applies too --- the position is a lot of arm + sure hands, and less range dependant than other spots so it makes sense that a good defender could age more gracefully at third.

Exactly my thoughts. People had Semien batting 6th/7th before the season started last year. If he looks great in spring training, he will go 2nd. If not, he bats 5th.
