Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted March 11, 2022 Posted March 11, 2022 Those are really cool angles. It's amazing that Bo looked completely overmatched and Vlad drives it oppo with ease. When I watched Bo's at bat, I thought to myself - f*** me - this is why players struggle to spray the ball around or bunt to "beat the shift" - Romano is f***ing filthy. Then Vlad comes up and hammers 2 pitches off the RF wall. The best hitters in baseball are just on another level. Bo also just didn’t swing at the 2 best pitches of the at bat. But yeah Vlad looks locked already

I believe Bo actually got the most opposite field hits in baseball last year (as well as the most hits in the AL). I bet if you crunched the pitch selection and batted ball data you'd find the main difference between Vlad and Bo is Vlad has slightly better exit velocity and lays off more tough pitches, but both are elite at hammering tough pitches the other way.

Vlad has a significantly better barrel rate, which is a bit more important than exit velo. Also, while the max EV difference may appear sort of minor in absolute terms it might be like, an entire standard deviation better. And the outside swing % is not close at all. 28% vs 42% Basically, Bo is mildly exploitable; really good pitchers can probably get him to make poor contact outside of the zone. But he's such a good hitter that he can get oppo singles on bad swings! very different archetypes. so much fun to watch. Vlad is a hitting god. Bo is a preternatural hitting talent too but he's too aggressive to be a phenom and of course he doesn't have the extreme pop.
Laika Community Moderator Posted March 11, 2022 Posted March 11, 2022 Bo has another level though. If he can level up the PED he could legit hit like .330

I would be interested in the differences in launch angle. Especially during the period pre Vlad.2 when he was hammering everything into the ground at 110Mph..

Especially during the period pre Vlad.2 when he was hammering everything into the ground at 110Mph.. Bro Vlad's LAs were like, 4 and 6% in 2019 and 2020. Bo's were double digits. That inverted last year, Vlad was almost 10% and Bo was like 7%
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted March 11, 2022 Posted March 11, 2022 Beltre is the size of one of Vlad's legs

I...I wasn't judging Bo at all.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted March 11, 2022 Posted March 11, 2022 I...I wasn't judging Bo at all. I just think Bo is one of the best opposite-field hitters in the game. Maybe I'm wrong but didn't he lead the league in opposite field hits last year? I remember him hitting a lot of opposite-field homers and doubles. One in particular against Chad Green to win a game against the Yankees. Bo had the 4th most hard hit balls in baseball last year but was like 30th in barrels because his launch angle was down a bit. But he also used the entire field so got a lot of opposite field singles. He also had terrible plate discipline which may have something to do with the ground ball rate. So in terms of driving a pitch the other way, if he gets the right pitch Bo, I bet is as good as Vlad. It's the plate discipline that is the biggest difference, which also means some at bats the difference is Bo swing at a bad pitch and doesn't hit it hard, or gets behind in the count.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted March 12, 2022 Posted March 12, 2022 No Lambo money just yet Considering papa is loaded himself, I'm sure it was easy to spend everyone on that lol
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted March 12, 2022 Posted March 12, 2022 No Lambo money just yet That's not a base model Vette man, that's probably not THAT much cheaper than a Lambo...
King Old-Timey Member Posted March 12, 2022 Posted March 12, 2022 Speaking of PEDs they stopped testing during the lockout. Wonder how many players will get suspended for juicing.
