L54 Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2022 Posted December 5, 2022 Kershaw never seemed like the type of dude who was out to 'maximize his value' at every stop. He has more than enough money in the bank at this point, and just cares about racking up career accolades as a Dodger legend and having a shot at the World Series every year. He also might be willing to take slight discounts so the Dodgers can do other things like sign Freddie Freeman to a contract. He might've switched teams if some team was willing to give him stupid money (like the DeGrom contract), but I don't think many teams are due to his injury history (and his stuff and velo seem to be declining every year). Pretty much. He’s going to be known as one of the greatest Dodgers ever, spend his entire career there and have a chance at a WS every year. He doesn’t need 80M to move home to Dallas and play for a bad team.

Yeah. He's the Dodgers all-time leader in Ks and is a couple years from being the franchise leader in wins. Cementing his legacy as the greatest Dodger pitcher of all-time and pitching for the best team in baseball is apparently worth it to him vs. going to Texas and winning 80 games with a mediocre team. I can't imagine wanting to leave LA if I were in his shoes.
Stottlemyres_Bloody_Chin Verified Member Posted December 5, 2022 Posted December 5, 2022 Some BS that Schilling is getting the shaft. f*** him
Stottlemyres_Bloody_Chin Verified Member Posted December 5, 2022 Posted December 5, 2022 That’s not really it The guy is an insane loser and was tweeting jokes about killing journalists, saying muslims are nazis, stuff like that Agreed. Schilling can get f***ed
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2022 Posted December 5, 2022 f*** him Insightful commentary, clear rational behind your reasoning, coupled with meticulously sourced evidence. Good post!

Ray Verified Member Posted December 5, 2022 Posted December 5, 2022 Phillies getting Trea Turner according to Passan. 11 years, $300M according to Kiley McDaniel This market is absolutely bonkers....

I think he could get close to stupid money; the Rangers would probably offer even more than the 80 mil I threw out there and with a 0% tax rate in TX vs 13.3% rate in CA it works out to even more. I'm not saying he should or shouldn't I was just pointing out that the rich get richer and that he was leaving a ton of money on the table. Good for him though, it seems like 99% of players take whoever offers the most money.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2022 Posted December 5, 2022 11 years for Turner is pretty crazy. Speed is a big part of his game.
BTS Community Moderator Posted December 5, 2022 Posted December 5, 2022 11 years, $300M according to Kiley McDaniel This market is absolutely bonkers.... This feels like one of those 'mistake the moment the ink dries' deals.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2022 Posted December 5, 2022 11 years for Turner is pretty crazy. Speed is a big part of his game. I think he's proven he's a good hitter and its not just because of his speed. He can probably comfortably shift to 2B in a few years and still be above average. Definitely a risky deal for 11 years, but pretty much any deal longer than 8 years isn't a great idea.
wilko Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2022 Posted December 5, 2022 11 years, $300M according to Kiley McDaniel This market is absolutely bonkers.... That's gross.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2022 Posted December 5, 2022 Didn't realize Trea is 29 already damn. Yeah that deal is gonna be ugly past year 6ish probably
glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2022 Posted December 5, 2022 11 years, $300M according to Kiley McDaniel This market is absolutely bonkers.... I'm guessing they increased the years to lower the AAV for CBT reasons, but holy s***, 11 years for a guy about to turn 30 is crazy.
Captain_Obvious Verified Member Posted December 5, 2022 Posted December 5, 2022 This feels like one of those 'mistake the moment the ink dries' deals. He was expected to get 300M over fewer years. This might be a little more team friendly than people thought.
RobinThicc Verified Member Posted December 5, 2022 Posted December 5, 2022 Philly probably already accepted that they'll be trash in the back half of the deal anyways. Gotta take advantage of your window.
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 5, 2022 Posted December 5, 2022 Nice landing spot for Trea Turner's fantasy value.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2022 Posted December 5, 2022 Ok, so being judgmental, thinking ones opinion that is different from yours is not compatible, being a fascist about it and zero consideration given to merit. Gotcha! Why didn't you just say that in the first place!? Yeah, back to square one, let character issues come down to quantifiable things (crime, accusations of criminal activity) At least this guy can be shamelessly honest though. Can’t say the same for these d-bags hiding behind votes

Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2022 Posted December 5, 2022 The irony in this post is next level If I have a different baseball opinion then someone on this board I support it with why, how I came to that conclusion. I have already made numerous posts supporting the statistical merits of Schilling. Toddlermeyer just slings F-bombs and sound like some unhinged loon. By his own admission, his hate is opinion based and nothing to do with merit. Every time I have gone after you for something it has been a counter argument supported by facts or experience. Nothing to do with your personal opinions not related to this board.

Yea don’t get me wrong great player. He could go back into the Outfield as well. I just didn’t see the 11 years coming. He just won’t be the level of player he is not in the final 4-5 years of that contract. Good for him though.
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2022 Posted December 5, 2022 Back to Turner. People were gasping when Diaz got his deal. It is the new market folks. You either go that extra $$ or term or someone else will. Similar to the housing market in desirable locations... .. Insane prices but unless you want to rent the rest of your life (not cheap either), you need to pay or someone else will. Really it comes down to not what someone is worth or longevity of the contract. It is what someone else will pay to obtain the same thing and if you want it, or want to deprive someone else (competition of it) you need to pay.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2022 Posted December 5, 2022 All I think about when I hear these deals is how it will impact the Jays ability to sign anyone of significance. They're not going into luxury tax territory... Trades it is.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2022 Posted December 5, 2022 Schilling has some offensive views but what makes him worse than Kirby Puckett, Roberto Alomar or even a drug addict like Roy Halladay? Those guys are just off the top of my head I'm sure there are guys in there that are much worse.

This is the Toronto Blue Jays after signing George Springer and Kevin Gausman, two top of class free agents. Remove your whiny, second tier loser fan head from your loser fan anus.

Ryu was signed the year before that too. We basically sign one top tier FA each year now. We aren't LA or the NYY but are otherwise considered a big market team now.
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2022 Posted December 5, 2022 Another way to look at an 11 year deal where everyone knows the last few years are a sunk cost is this. Instead of a higher AAV, you get to spread that out for tax and budget purposes. Also, if they have insurance like the Ryu contract, and TT is hurt the last few years, maybe they can recoup some with insurance...?

Maybe he would have been given a pass if he pretended to apologize for the hanging comment and kept quiet, but he kept saying things that he knew would not be taken well by the voters. That said he deserves to get in on merit.
