Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted April 25, 2022 Posted April 25, 2022 So we're in agreement. This is a job that a human cannot do properly. This is why technological advancements are made...To help us with things that are too hard or take us too long to do on our own.

I hated it and I made some bad calls myself. Everything happens so fast and you have to make the correct call right on the spot.
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted April 25, 2022 Posted April 25, 2022 Buxton is really good when healthy 1.3 WAR in 10 games, lol.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted April 25, 2022 Posted April 25, 2022 I can't wait to see the umpire scorecard from last night's Brewers/Phillies game. Curious to see what % of calls that Angel got right. By eye, it looked like maybe 32%
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted April 25, 2022 Posted April 25, 2022 Buxton is really good when healthy 1.3 WAR in 10 games, lol. I would love to see what he can do over a full season as a baseball fan and as a Buxton owner in the LOD. Buxton can be a 7-8WAR player easily if he's on the field.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted April 25, 2022 Posted April 25, 2022 Wasn't even his worst call of the night. LOL at Hader's smug smirk after the call.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted April 25, 2022 Posted April 25, 2022 Thanks! I mean apparently he wasn't as bad as the eye may have suggested. It would be interesting if they just tracked the calls on the 'edges' (while establishing what they consider the edge). If pitchers are rutting balls all day, then obviously their accuracy will improve. It's the edge calls that make or break the game.

He called 11 of 48 called strikes were actually balls. Almost 25%! Brutal
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted April 25, 2022 Posted April 25, 2022 I think Angel called a good game. Yeah, but you're a sadist and enjoy other people's misery.

Humans aren’t equipped to make the precise calls required to be 100% effective with the strike zone. The job has only gotten harder in the last 30+ years due to increased avg velocity around the league. Its time for the computers.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted April 25, 2022 Posted April 25, 2022 The first one didn't miss by much, especially slinging in from a lefty, that's a tough margin call. I think sometimes people expect too much. The second one...yeah that was crap. I think they were egregious. Buts its all beside the point. There is or very soon will be a much better technological solution that will bring unparalled consistency and accuracy to calling balls and strikes. I'm done with Ump Shows and old fashioned elements of the game like moronic varying zones from different umps. Cost us 2015. I've been done with it since Eric Gregg completely changed an entire playoff game/series himself for Livan Hernandez. '97 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=59YiY0SKM1A Implement robo umps ASAP. Enough already of the Nelsons and Hernandezs show.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted April 25, 2022 Posted April 25, 2022 Do they track the run factor cumulatively? Would be curious to see which teams get the most runs and which get screwed the most by year end...and by how much.

Plus to be fair to umps (something very few of us want to do during the game), technology is at the point where each pitch can be scrutinized with great detail. There are multiple angles showing the strike zone, the pitch (showing its movement) and how it may catch a corner of the zone before it drops out of the zone and into the catcher's mitt...and these people are supposed to be able to discern this (in a microsecond) with accuracy. These umpire report cards were never available before either. Technology has advanced to the point where their performance receives instant feedback and we can see just how "bad" humans are at calling balls and strikes consistently, with accuracy.
BTS Community Moderator Posted April 25, 2022 Posted April 25, 2022 They do on the website yeah umpscorecards.com Toronto has actually fared quite well for the most part. Russell Martin was a king. 2021 23rd 2020 19th 2019 11th 2018 6th 2017 7th 2016 1st 2015 5th

I just wonder how much age correlates to good and bad strike calling skills. And really, it is the called strikes vs called balls that are much worse in the accuracy dept. I'd also love to get into the real data and find out where the majority of missed strike calls are vs missed balls. My suspicion is that more strikes are called that should be balls on the width of the zone, and more balls are called that should be strikes on the top/bottom, moreso the bottom.

So good in so many aspects of the game. 55 career WAR.

That game yesterday was the first game of the season that Houston had a run impact that was in their favour.

Dodgers and Yankees are #1 & #2.

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted April 25, 2022 Posted April 25, 2022 i dont care if the umps get some calls wrong, as long as the distribution of both the number of wrong calls and the severity of impact of the wrong call is equally distributed among teams the evidence is the Jays are getting royally screwed
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted April 25, 2022 Posted April 25, 2022 .248 191hr won’t move the needle, even for a C. But Yadier is somehow considered a slam dunk hall of famer. People are weird. Martin hit better, ran the bases better, and defended at an elite level. Has more WAR per season than Yadier. Afterthought HOF? Yadier blew chunks with the bat, didnt run well, and was otherworldly on D. Slam dunk HOF?
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted April 25, 2022 Posted April 25, 2022 It seems to me that MLB has clearly communicated to the umpires that they need to impact Jays games to some degree. MLB knows that Jays playoff ratings aren't ideal and the idea of the Jays in the WS is a nightmare for American viewership. Being able to swing even 3-5 games against the Jays could be enough to keep them from playing in October.

Posey had more uber elite seasons. But a Catcher should be rewarded for durability and consistent value in the hardest position to play. I've heard more people say Sal Perez should be in the HOF than Martin. I agree Martin will be passed over, which is a shame.

Sal Perez making the HOF would make everyone forget about the Harold Baines induction. In fact - may be it was Harold Baines telling you Sal should be in the HOF?

I dont even know what kind of argument could be made for Perez. He was at one time half decent at defense, but isnt anymore. When he was good at D, he was bad at O, now it's the reverse. Like there's no argument to be made for Sal Perez at all.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted April 25, 2022 Posted April 25, 2022 3 of the 4 worst called games (as far as accuracy goes) have been Jays games. The one that favored the Jays only gave .17 runs, the other 2 nearly 3 runs negative against.
