saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted February 7, 2022 Posted February 7, 2022 You don't have a luxury tax if there is no season. Fair point. I think June is the optimistic start date. A lost season is entirely possible.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted February 7, 2022 Posted February 7, 2022 I don't know what this really means, but I'm posting it https://bleacherreport.com/articles/10026155-report-mlb-stops-testing-for-steroids-after-drug-agreement-with-players-expires
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted February 8, 2022 Posted February 8, 2022 While I'm not a big fan of mediation, there is no downside to it for either side. Not understanding the player's stance.

But for now there is no testing. So if a player wanted to he could do a few cycles, gain the benefits over the course of a few months, assuming he started right as the CBA expired back in December, and then have it completely out of his system by the time the new CBA is signed and testing is happening again. Im gonna guess quite a lot of guys did this, especially the fringe major leaguers.

Maybe, but it would be a pretty big gamble as an agreement theoretically could have happened quickly (you know, if idiots weren't in charge of both sides). I would guess most of the guys likely to attempt it would be ones needing to recover from bad injuries.

Yeah, they're still testing in the minors though as 5 MILB guys were caught the other day, one was Dalton Pompeys brother. I think thats his second time caught.

John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted February 8, 2022 Posted February 8, 2022 Hey, you learn something new everyday. I was not aware it was the owners who had originally pushed for arbitration, and it used to start after 2 years, with no limits on how often if could be gone through. https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/mlb-lockout-examining-baseballs-precedent-for-arbitration-eligibility-after-two-years/?fbclid=IwAR1lyjOCc0ruztSmMzGLqbViJ6fuIYcqHtr6j2jeyZLUIdYTUwS90N6TgtQ

I feel like that's a rather important part as well. I suspect they probably wouldn't.

Stupid how they still test for that in the MILB while in the MLB they dont test for any recreational drugs. They got rid of weed as drug of abuse for minor leaguers a long time ago. Marijuana use no longer banned for Minor League Baseball players | Las Vegas Review-Journal (reviewjournal.com) It's likely coke.

The_DH Verified Member Posted February 8, 2022 Posted February 8, 2022 Yes. I remember when he was finishing school that we should try to get him, then I thought about Pompey concussions. Oh well.
jerb Verified Member Posted February 10, 2022 Posted February 10, 2022 Jon Heyman @JonHeyman MLB is planning to make a new proposal following the owners meeting which ends tomorrow. It is expected to involve core economic issues, and hope remains that it could trigger something to get a deal done on time for the regular season to begin as scheduled, or close. Jon Heyman @JonHeyman MLB and the players union are to meet Saturday so presumably the new MLB proposal will be unveiled then

JaysAllMighty Old-Timey Member Posted February 10, 2022 Posted February 10, 2022 Summary of the owners new offer: We’ll fill all the Coke machines, for free. Deal? Players must stop their greed. Bunch of spoiled millionaire brats.

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted February 10, 2022 Posted February 10, 2022 Even with 200,000 cases a day and 1000-2000 deaths per day, most parts of the the US are dismantling restrictions. Unlikely the pandemic is a consideration of the owners at this point.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted February 10, 2022 Posted February 10, 2022 Unlikely the pandemic is a consideration of the owners at this point. Yeah I think the only MLB market with any real restriction is Toronto. Owners would be making money in ST and regular season mostly like normal, I would imagine. I guess the owners are ready to take that hit.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted February 10, 2022 Posted February 10, 2022 Yeah, that drove me to hell and back crazy, the bastards. Also, this dude is PIST!!! He must be one of the reps on the Union team.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted February 10, 2022 Posted February 10, 2022 I mean you're probably right - but shouldn't the response look at the average return for all MLB teams over some random duration? Cherry picking 1 team for 1 duration is weak.

Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted February 10, 2022 Posted February 10, 2022 That's an incredibly stupid argument, even if it was true. Billionaires don't put ALL of their money into the stock market. They put it into alternative assets to stocks like art. And some of them baseball teams. They even accept lower rates of returns in exchange for diversification of asset classes to guarantee a minimum level of wealth.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted February 10, 2022 Posted February 10, 2022 I mean you're probably right - but shouldn't the response look at the average return for all MLB teams over some random duration? Cherry picking 1 team for 1 duration is weak. AVERAGE: In 2000, the average value of an MLB team was $238 million. In 2019, the average value is $1.735 billion. This is an increase of $1.4097 billion (728%). Even cherry picking what's probably the lowest valued teams (Tampa, Oakland, Pittsburgh, Cinci)... They all show pretty nice valuation increases: https://www.statista.com/statistics/194639/mlb-franchise-value-of-the-tampa-bay-rays-since-2006/ https://www.statista.com/statistics/194631/mlb-franchise-value-of-the-pittsburgh-pirates-since-2006/ https://www.statista.com/statistics/194629/mlb-franchise-value-of-the-oakland-athletics-since-2006/ https://www.statista.com/statistics/194607/mlb-franchise-value-of-the-cincinnati-reds-since-2006/ For the big boys: https://www.statista.com/statistics/194628/mlb-franchise-value-of-the-new-york-yankees-since-2006/ https://www.statista.com/statistics/194621/mlb-franchise-value-of-the-los-angeles-dodgers-since-2006/ And Toronto https://www.statista.com/statistics/194642/mlb-franchise-value-of-the-toronto-blue-jays-since-2006/
