Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted November 28, 2021 Posted November 28, 2021 What compensation do we get for this? Supplementary pic.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted November 28, 2021 Posted November 28, 2021 Semien won't be able to get to the inside fastball in 2-3 years like he is now. Crazy to give him a contract like that.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted November 28, 2021 Posted November 28, 2021 What compensation do we get for this? • If the team that loses the player does not receive revenue sharing and did not exceed the luxury-tax salary threshold the previous season, its compensatory pick will come after Competitive Balance Round B. The value of the player's contract doesn't matter in this case. The 15 teams in this category: Angels, Astros, Athletics, Blue Jays, Braves, Cardinals, Cubs, Giants, Mets, Nationals, Phillies, Rangers, Red Sox, White Sox and Yankees.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted November 28, 2021 Posted November 28, 2021 We’re all set up for Bo to slide over second and sign Correa to play Shortstop. Trade for Jose Ramirez to play Third.
xposbrad Verified Member Posted November 28, 2021 Posted November 28, 2021 I love it when teams not named the Jays get stuck with garbage contracts. But this one could end up being bad in most likely 2-3 years. 31 years old, his agent needs a medal for milking texas hard.
smg66 Verified Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 Soooo disappointed that he would be all about the money. Naive of me to think he would accept a reasonable offer with the Jays and help them to another World Series win. He and Bo worked so well together and his “lead by example” approach was priceless. Really how much money does he need to have a good life? He is a classy guy so I do wish him well but really disappointed with his choice!

Do you know roughly where that pick would be? It sucks to lose a 7.3 Win player. 91 wins with him and losing a 7 win player means what? Maybe sign the Seagar Brothers. That takes care of second and third and gives us the lefty bat. Or Apparently, Jose Berrios is the Brother-in-law of Javier Baez but I am not a fan of his kind of hitting profile - huge strikeouts and low OBP. Nor the long commitment for such a player.

They were a 99 win run differential team with him and a 92 win run differential team without him assuming they replace him with a random sucky guy from triple a. If they replace him with someone better then a replacement level moron they will lose less wins. Even if they replaced him with himself they would have lost 3 wins or so (he likely won't repeat that season). They don't have to build a 100 win team as it is unlikely bullpen and luck will be terrible every year.

Javier Baez can play every position on the diamond but catcher reasonably well. He's a great fit for the Jays IMO.

Thanks - that's an excellent point - I completely forgot about our huge run differential and it was frustrating that our pen was imploding. Our pen is much better now with Richards and Cimber and Garcia than the dregs we had to start last season (and unfortunate injuries to some of our best BP arms.

I look at him as a bit of a mixed bag - he led the NL in strikeouts - 184 against 28 walks. A .319 OBP. I wouldn't want to give him a 9 figure contract. When Atkins talked about a different kind of line-up with a different attack - Baez isn't it. Corey Seager seems exactly what Atkins was talking about - lefty bat - high OBP and better hitter overall than Baez and doesn't strike out. Granted he may cost more - quality usually does.

We'll have to see who Semien is replaced with. It will be interesting to see once the offseason is finished what the projected win total is. I'll be happy if it is around 90, I'll feel OK if it is 87 or 88, if it is below 85 I'll worry.
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 I thought a 5/125 deal was great for us but it may have taken 6/150 to get him like Springer. 7/175 is clearly the Texas penalty that only applies to them What am I missing about a Texas penalty??
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 What am I missing about a Texas penalty?? Meaning they’d have to offer more to sign there.. that’s typically something ppl say about Tor
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 What am I missing about a Texas penalty?? The team itself is pretty bad right now and likely will be in the immediate future as well.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 lol... every year, man. Not sure what this means. Was giving a reason to buddy for why some would be in a panic over Semien not returning. I'm not worried about Semien not returning.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 I don’t know what to tell those people then. Ownership has committed to spending more than last year and they’ve played at the top of the FA market the last two winters Classic example of why fans shouldn’t fall in love with specific players It's been very promising recently. Those "payroll parameter" days didn't go over well. Same owners, but it does seem that they're ready to take out their dicks and f*** now.
Key22 Verified Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 What am I missing about a Texas penalty?? In terms of money I believe Texas is a no income tax state so $175million there is a lot more money than making $175million in Toronto. And since Semien went with Boras - money is a major factor. It's funny though because Semien was talking Toronto up being a winning team and having a great workout facility etc. Then signs with a pretty bad baseball team. Although they'll be much better with Semien.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 Good for Semien. I'm happy that he got paid big dollars.
WryNGinger Verified Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 Love that Semien got his payday but it kinda seems like he is giving up winning a world series with this contract. Are the Rangers likely to be able to buy themselves into playoff contention?

BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 He is a great guy and elite player who gave us a stunning 2021, but hard pass on that deal for a 31 year old middle IF pull hitter.
hongsw84 Verified Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 7 years over the limit.. we should have offered him 3 years, but nope.
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 7 years over the limit.. we should have offered him 3 years, but nope. You know there was zero chance he'd take a 3 year deal? Unless it was something ludicrous like $50M/year, which no team (other than perhaps the Mets, who appear to be so desperate that they've completely forgotten what money actually is) would ever offer him. Jays probably had a 5 year offer on the table for him.

I think they pay taxes on money they earn while playing away games at the rate of wherever they are playing. And depending on where he lives in the off-season he might have to pay taxes for money earned over that time. Where a player actually signs probably only has something like a 25% effect on total income tax. There's probably accounting tricks the players use all the time.

Home costs/real estate taxes, etc. Texas is definitely a state your dollar goes further but I’m sure it wasn’t literally a count every penny thing

I'm not sure how this profile will hold up going into his mid-30's. Doesn't have a ton of power to spare. I would have been fine with 5 years, with the assumption that for the 5th year he wouldn't be worth his salary. https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/marcus-semien-543760?stats=statcast-r-hitting-mlb

Jays tried to extend him during season and I’m sure it was prob 4-5 years.
