The madness is just beginning. This is gonna be a whale of a 24 hours.

Is that an overpay for a league average caliber free agent outfielder nowadays?

Well, I just wouldn’t think it’d be the Marlins. Going to be crazy market looks like. Lots of buyers

Yeah I see what you mean

I guess the Marlins think they're a couple of bats shy of competing

Texas was so s*** I don’t even think they have to surrender their first round pick to sign him.

Nobody has to surrender a 1st round pick to sign someone anymore. Well except the Mets this year. You give up your 2nd highest pick. Which in the Mets case is 14th overall because they didn't sign Rocker last year so has 2 first rounders.

Team involved expect Kevin Gausman to make his choice no later than Monday. The #Mets are among many teams in pursuit.

Hearing from a couple places that Jon Gray will make his decision soon. Plus slider, the curveball is above-average outside of Coors, and the team that gets him will believe they can maybe make some changes on the fastball profile, which fit Coors. Either way, floor's super high.

Ray, Gray, Gausman, Rodon. Need to get 1 of those guys. 2 seems unlikely, but could be possible if it includes Gray.

Why is 2 unlikely. We have more than enough money to spend

4 years for Avisail Garcia is crazy IMO. He's far too inconsistent to justify a 4 year commitment (similar to Grichuk).

Agreed. Maybe no one wants to go there and they had to settle for what they can get but four years of Avisail Garcia is gross

Ray, Gausman, and Rodon probably cost 25 million each. Unless Rodon is willing to go longer term, smaller AAV. I'm expecting 1-2 years in the 20's million range for him. They've committed around 120 so far including arb raises. Even if they can go as high as 180 million payroll I don't really expect them to spend 50 of the remaining 60 on 2 starting pitchers when they need another pen arm, another starting infielder and it's possible they go after an outfielder/DH option to help rotate through because they feel unwilling to use Kirk as the DH.

If they see Biggio as the option at 2B and Moreno/Espinal good enough (baring a trade) at 3B, they can definitely get both

They're not going into the season with Espinal and Moreno as their only options at 3rd. Espinal might be able to handle it but you want to have another reasonable option, and Moreno might be that down the line, but they're clearly not looking at him that way this coming season. He's played like 4 or 5 games there between the minors and the AFL combined.

Entirely possible they go into the season with Espinal and Biggio as the primary 3B options.

I think it's entirely possible that's the 2B options. I think they're done with Biggio at 3rd though. Even in that case they'd acquire someone for 2nd. I really don't think you see both of Espinal starts at 3rd, Biggio at 2nd and your bench is something like Valera, and Smith. They're bringing in a 3rd capable potential starter and it's likely someone who can play 3rd if Espinal gets hurt or bombs out.

Mets full attention at moment is on Max Scherzer, who may make a decision tonight. While the incumbent Dodgers are perceived as the favorite, the Mets are determined and financially formidable. If Scherzer goes elsewhere, Mets are expected to pivot to Kevin Gausman.

I find it a bit odd that Ray isn't being mentioned more in the trade rumours - Gausman is mentioned everywhere. hmm.

Sources: Mets have offered Scherzer more than $40 million per year. Length unknown. Doesn’t mean he’ll sign there; that’s still unclear.

Shapiro did say the team has the ability to spend up to the Luxury Tax. Not that they will, but they can. That indicates they can if the right opportunities present themselves. $30m comes off the books in 2 years (Ryu and Grichuck) which helps.

Its possible. With potentially a FA signing as a backup infielder basically. Moreno should be playing 3B only in a winter league I believe. Its also not like converting someone to a position they have never played before. C to 3B, infielder to OF, etc. He was converted from a SS to catcher

At this I hope its the Jays getting him

I hope so too, but I am fully prepared to be disappointed. As each available free agent comes off of the board I find myself getting antsy just like I do every offseason. Gausman at 5 years/$100 million is almost certainly a much better value than what Ray will end up earning.
