connorp Old-Timey Member Posted September 16, 2021 Posted September 16, 2021 Tie breaker for WC is H2H? Like if Jays and Sox/Yanks tied for 2nd WC? Or do they play?

Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted September 16, 2021 Posted September 16, 2021 Do the jays havethetiebreak between both yanks and Sox?
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted September 16, 2021 Posted September 16, 2021 IIRC the potential mess with Detroit and Baltimore back in 2016 was that the Jays had H2H advantage so they would get the home game in any tie breaker scenario and would get a second chance on the road if they lost it. Then the O's won a coin toss and had the choice between the two road games or a one-and-done at home and of course they picked the latter. So my guess would be something similar this year. Red Sox hold the H2H over both teams and Jays over Yankees. Another reason why to cheer for the Yankees over the Red Sox when they meet (assuming Boston hasn't completely s*** the bed by then).

Key22 Verified Member Posted September 17, 2021 Posted September 17, 2021 This is the first time since 1993 where I feel like if we make the playoffs and wild card game that we have a legit shot at winning the WS - even against LA. We have a legit 1-2-3-4 rotation in a short series they can do a number on an opposing offence - and with our offence which has to be near the top in baseball and respectable enough defence, I can see why Tampa fans would not want to face us. Ray, Berrios, Manoah, Matz. Ryu in the pen. Unlike our prior run with Jose, Donaldson and EE - this offence seems more complete with guys who are willing to hit a single the opposite way where scoring runs is more important than trying to hit bombs every at-bat. If we don't make - it's been fun. Hope they keep Ray and Semien. They'll be next to impossible to replace. Cavan Biggio is not a replacement - Jays apparently have $80million available next year.
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted September 17, 2021 Posted September 17, 2021 I don't think Semien will be impossible to replace. Maybe I'm not very good at figuring this stuff out, but a full season from Springer and Kirk could potentially be enough to replace Semien's WAR. A bounce back season from a healthy Biggio likely adds another 3+ WAR as well, never mind if the Jays actually went out and signed or traded for players like Ramirez, Story or Correa. For me, getting Ray re-signed is more important. It completely solidifies the Jays rotation 1 thru 4 (Ray, Ryu, Berrios, Manoah) and then you have guys like Stripling, Pearson and Hatch battling to take the 5th spot, and that's if the Jays don't dig up another hidden gem from out of nowhere like the seem to be able to do on a whim. That's how they got Ray, Matz and Stripling to begin with. Find and fix seems to be their forte. Hell, maybe they use their track record to lure Thor back to TO on a one year show me deal and then he comes in and is a CY contender next season.

It's not the offense from Semien that realistically needs to be replaced, there's enough of that on the Jays roster even without him. Yes, you always want to add more runs if you can, that's never the wrong thing to do, but replacing his defense is key. It really is the one issue with the Jays as a team, their team defense is ... not where you would want it to be. Yeah, they can outscore anyone, but counting on those offensive outbursts in the playoffs is more risky given that you're mostly facing top end pitching and top end pen arms for the vast majority of your PAs. Doesn't matter how great your hitters are if a pitcher is dealing and you definitely don't want to give the opposition free baserunners and runs due to mistakes in the field. Semien right now is the only full-time player aside from catchers where the Jays can be truly confident in his defense, maybe Grichuk as well.

If he's replacing Semien at 2B, it's not going to be the tirefire that it was when he was learning 3B while hurt.

You're not wrong... but the point being that Semien, who's playing gold glove caliber defense; should he leave and even be replaced by Biggio (which Iagree is the likely scenario) the defense still takes a hit and the defense is already the team's collective weakness and in need of improvement.
