Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted August 14, 2021 Posted August 14, 2021 I just saw the replay with the Mariners announcers and even they were sure Valera was safe. I don’t really care what the announcers say, we have video where we can clearly see that Murphy tags the forearm for several frames when he swiped with his glove
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 14, 2021 Posted August 14, 2021 Can't believe the failures to score
Starrynova Verified Member Posted August 14, 2021 Posted August 14, 2021 I’m just speechless at the number of games pissed away this season. This is not a playoff team, not with clueless Montoyo in charge.

thatoneguy Old-Timey Member Posted August 14, 2021 Posted August 14, 2021 What an endlessly frustrating season. Shatkins has to share some of the blame here in keeping Montoyo around. This can't keep going on like this, by most reasonable metrics this should be a playoff team and yet this clueless curmudgeon keeps making dumbfounding mistakes with his pitching staff.

The glove missed. It's obvious. The way he continued his motion. We're talking about the threads of the glove hanging down, did they touch his forearm? All season long they have never overturned calls, even when they were obvious. This was was far from obvious.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted August 14, 2021 Posted August 14, 2021 https://streamable.com/t3o47x how could you look at that video and say he was out. The moment a catcher feels contact he lifts the glove to signal an out. The catcher continued to try and tag the runner....he f***ing missed him.

The glove is all over his arm. Pay attention to the strings. The strings all over the glove wrap around Valera's arm. That couldn't happen if the glove wasn't pressed up against him. He's out. It was a s***** send. That's just how it is. Blame the coaches if you want but the umps got it right.

The swipe of the glove was fractions of a second early and Valera’s arm appears to have just got under the tag as he swiped. The hanging rawhide may have brushed his arm, but not the glove. It doesn't look like his glove showed any signs of resistance if it hit his arm, unless it just barely brushed him. Bottom line is that the call on the field was safe and there is no way what we saw provided anything 100% conclusive to overturn the call on the field.
Rockhaus Verified Member Posted August 14, 2021 Posted August 14, 2021 MLB does not want the Jays in the playoffs over the RedSox of Yankees and the umpires have been on notice! Calls getting worse and worse lately toward the Jays since they got hot.

Blame the coaches if you want but the umps got it right. Why do people keep saying it was a “send”? Luis Rivera wasn’t demonstrative either way. In all likelihood it was Valera who made that decision. Also, I don’t know why people are so adamant about whether he was out or safe. I can’t tell, but some people here must have like 20/1 vision because they’re like 320% sure they’re right.

The shadow on his arm makes it a bit hard to tell, but those strings didn't move, which they would have if they'd made contact with his arm. The body of the glove definitely never touched him. If he was called safe on the field (which is what I'm gathering from reading here) that is 100% not enough information to overturn that call. And if it was overturned, it was a miss.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted August 14, 2021 Posted August 14, 2021 Let’s face it. Hand and Soria don’t really help us that much. We got Berrios and the pen is better…really just still sucks pretty much. The offence owns this too. Depressing game. Why slack Soria... game logs show good Soria? Ham and cheese not so much. I didn't slack him. He is a decent piece but just meant he doesn't move the needle enough. Neither does Hand. Soria xFIP 4.12...K rate is still ok. Meh.

There's just no consistency with approach. They overturned it in 10 seconds. It's like they watched it once in real time and made the call. They didn't slow it down or watch it multiple times. They always stick with the call on the field when it's this inconclusive. Even when it's seemingly obvious they don't overturn. We didn't get the Vlad call against New York and we had this one over turned against us. That's 2 games. We likely win one of those games if they went our way.

It's clear and obvious that the glove never touched him by the actions of the catcher. Did the tassels graze his arm? If we're down to the tassels, how can you overturn? He never stopped trying to tag the runner. This feels like some sort of psychological experiment. If you have this type of brain you saw this, if you have that type of brain you saw that.

Making as much money is the bottom line and the league will clearly make more money with the Yankees and the Red Sox in the post season.
spats Verified Member Posted August 14, 2021 Posted August 14, 2021 If the Jays had a pinch runner with some speed,he would have scored easily....someone like Johnathan Davis for example.

connorp Old-Timey Member Posted August 14, 2021 Posted August 14, 2021 Or at least whoever said, the call on the field should stand I’d agree with. Won’t find a closer play
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted August 14, 2021 Posted August 14, 2021 https://imgur.com/a/bn7I4P9 That’s not clear as day, we do know from the video that it was razer-thin close. The way that picture angle is, looks like he hit or is about to hit the fat part of the glove on him and that never happened The arm is behind the glove allowing the allusion.

vaff Verified Member Posted August 14, 2021 Posted August 14, 2021 https://imgur.com/a/bn7I4P9 Dude, the arrow I have added here is not glove/arm contact. The glove is simply in front of his arm. https://imgur.com/a/cYcO8QN
Effit Old-Timey Member Posted August 14, 2021 Posted August 14, 2021 Bottom line, given the history of our challenges and the criteria they want, it wasn’t conclusive enough to overturn and I can assure you it wouldn’t have been overturned if the roles were reversed.
