Laika Community Moderator Posted July 6, 2021 Posted July 6, 2021 They will almost certainly be tendered if they are decent enough. The only teams that go this route are cheaper orgs like the Rays who think they can allocate resources better with the extra cash. These type of relievers don't cost that much at all. Reliever salaries rise with saves since it's still such an antiquated system. Even for teams with $$$, the 40 man crunch is real.

If you're the Yankees you then also get to publicly bash your best reliever after you win your arbitration against him because he wasn't getting saves a closer and you saved a few hundred grand!
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted July 6, 2021 Posted July 6, 2021 s*** I forgot about the Jacob Barnes trade too and he seems like he's a big leaguer. So in the past couple of weeks Big Ross has added 3 middle relievers ranging from rosterable to decent, a left handed bench bat in Dickerson, and some SP depth with upside in Francis. It only cost us Rowdy Tellez, Panik, a non-prospect and the payroll increase is negligible. That's some damn fine work to get done and it's not even truly trade-deadline season yet.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted July 6, 2021 Posted July 6, 2021 Recent history would say don't expect them to be tendered all the way through arb. I know 2021 was an aberration of a year but look at some of the relievers non-tendered: https://www.mlb.com/news/list-of-non-tendered-free-agents-2020-21 Yeah it looks like there's a lot of guys with similar value to Cimber and Richards there who got non-tendered. Our bullpen sucks though so if we can't completely rehaul it we at least have the option to hang on to them should they keep producing.

He also acquired Carl's Jr., who looks less rosterable but still shows that they've been as proactive as they can be in trying to improve the team.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted July 6, 2021 Posted July 6, 2021 Rowdy going to the Brewers is like the least surprising thing ever. He was out of a spot with the Jays with Vlad at 1B so this was inevitable. Good to see Atkins add some pen help for expendable parts. Guys like Richard and Cimber should be solid out of the pen as secondary options behind Dolis late in games.
King Old-Timey Member Posted July 6, 2021 Author Posted July 6, 2021 Tellez reunited with Shaw and Vogelbach to form a great offensive line for the Packers... i mean Brewers lol. Don't forget they also used to have Justin Smoak and Eric Thames

InvincibleTiger Verified Member Posted July 6, 2021 Posted July 6, 2021 Good on Atkins, but we know Charlie will still deploy his beloved Dolis late in high leverage spots.

The Iceman Verified Member Posted July 6, 2021 Posted July 6, 2021 One new body which pushes Dolis and Chatwood down the pecking order is a win for me. Adding Bouruki, Hatch and Merryweather will bump them down another notch. And don't look now but Mighty Taco Kirk is mashing in his first week @ AAA 1.166 OPS, .474 OBP Decision time is looming.
Benito Verified Member Posted July 6, 2021 Posted July 6, 2021 I like how aggressive the FO is. It helps to show the young core that they are not going to sit back and be complacent if the team is in a position to contend. Hopefully it convinces the young core (Bichette, Vlad) to be more amenable to signing extensions. I think we need to continue to be buyers rather than sellers, even if Jays seem to be consistently hovering around .500. Make a statement to the young core and the ridiculous upcoming FA class that the FO is focused now on adding only, rather than subtracting.

Trade of a catcher this month remains likely I don't know how much longer they can juggle 5 catchers on the 40 man roster especially with Reese out of options

That's what should happened but we have Dumbtoyo. You know he's going to f*** that up.

Roll with Kirk and McGuire until Reece and hope he doesn't turn into a pumpkin at the plate.
InsideThePark Verified Member Posted July 6, 2021 Posted July 6, 2021 This is a really good trade. I like Rowdy but he had no place here anymore and might be a fringe MLB player anyway. Richards is a really solid arm with lots of team control and Francis looks intriguing as a depth arm as well. edit: They autocorrected a "really solid arm" to "really dolis arm". Hope that's not a sign of things to come
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted July 6, 2021 Posted July 6, 2021 Welcome to Toronto Trevor and your wife! Only 28 years old and greyed up quick. Hope she's worth it brother.
Bluebombers Verified Member Posted July 6, 2021 Posted July 6, 2021 Happy to see pressing needs addressed. Another bullet in the magazine,so to speak, for our bullpen. An arm we can use right now ,over rowdy,s bat,at This time. And further moves to come, shoring up our pitching , tidying things up for a big push down the stretch
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted July 6, 2021 Posted July 6, 2021 Ross Atkins is cornering the market on perfectly cromulent middle relievers This gets a Thanks for your use of the word 'cromulent'.

Benito Verified Member Posted July 6, 2021 Posted July 6, 2021 Jansen to the Pirates for Richard Rodriguez would be nice. I would wet myself if Atkins could pull this off.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted July 6, 2021 Posted July 6, 2021 I would wet myself if Atkins could pull this off. The Pirates would possibly do it for McGuire.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted July 6, 2021 Posted July 6, 2021 Would be careful with Rodriguez. He was a sticky stuff guy. Still a nice arm and doesn't walk anybody.
Benito Verified Member Posted July 6, 2021 Posted July 6, 2021 Is that statement fact or conjecture pertaining to sticking stuff contributing to Rodriguez' success? Perhaps I am overvaluing him, but McGuire or Jansen would be a steal in my books.

There is serious reason for suspicion as he has experienced a pretty dramatic drop in his spin rate in the second half of June. https://jaysfromthecouch.com/2021/07/04/blue-jays-trade-targets-richard-rodriguez-and-red-flags/
InvincibleTiger Verified Member Posted July 6, 2021 Posted July 6, 2021 So now our bullpen is comprised of: Romano Cimber Richards Mayza Barnes Castro Kay Saucedo Dolis Thornton with Merryweather, Hatch and Borucki on their way.

Just like our starting rotation, missing some top end talent. Still better than it was a week ago.
