I would have 100% traded Semien and Ray and then gone all in the offseason. Then we could have used those assets to fill in the pieces we couldn't get from free agency.

 

We also wouldn't have been handicapped 10 games in the Division and chasing only 1 wild card spot with the Yankees right there too.

Problem is you don't know who will come here or who you can get in Free agency ultimately..isn't it better to take the players when they are available? Berrios is here for next season anyway

Players play to win and if the organization does not, then most probably you are going to have some unhappy campers. And unhappy campers may not want to resign.

 

If the organization demonstrates that they believe in the players on the team by supporting them with some moves, then players like Ray and other free agents are more likely to sign.

 

If you go into free agency with the reputation of an organization that is always looking to the future collecting prospects, you will probably have a more difficult time trying to sign top tier talent that wants to win now.

You have to remember Free Agency in Toronto is not a great place. Toronto is not on a lot of players list especially now with the uncertainty of border restrictions we may not get a lot of that top tier talent even take a look at us. So it is easy to say but not that easy to execute.

 

Also i don't think i would of sold off Ray. Keep him in and try to work out a deal and not let any team talk to him yet. If we had let Ray go and didn't get Berrios we would of been left with Ryu, Manoah, and stripling. Then we are battling to fill some holes Pearson is not a for sure anymore and you can't bank on free agency. Seems like Ray likes Walker and the organization he may be our best bet to land here.

The prices being paid are ridiculous. It's almost unfathomable to think that they wouldn't trade him. If any team could screw this up it's the Rockies. They could actually not move Story and end up getting a comp pick for him instead..lol.

We were able to get Ryu, Springer and Semien in back to back offseasons. As long as we're willing to spend, they will come and you also save prospect capital to truly go after missing pieces.

I meant handicapped by being 9.5 games back from the Division race and 4.5 games back from the Wild Card race with multiple teams in front of us who all got better too.
