OMG you nailed it haha. It's infuriating and I couldn't put my finger on it before.

 

Yeah, my career is in journalism and it was my most active hobby for years before I even got my first job. The more you read and work with good writing, the more obvious it becomes when someone is just pretending to be a good journalist.

 

Barry sucked at his job (to the point where I literally can't remember his last name right now) but he was a lot more natural in this role than Hazel and Arash because he was a sideline reporter that knew he was a sideline reporter. He wasn't punching above his weight class and posing as a master storyteller.

 

A sideline reporter just needs to exist and let the story tell itself, let the players be themselves. Trying to make everything deep just makes it suck.

 

I don't blame them for doing it though. Sports is full of ******** narrative peddlers that are wildly successful. Ron Maclean is one of the most accomplished Canadian sports people of all time and I've never watched a Ron Maclean segment that didn't feel forced and awkward and actively make me uncomfortable watching it.

Grichuk has maintained his reduced K rate from last year and added a few more walks to go along with his above average power and fielding. This is probably the player Shatkins envisioned when handing him that eextension. I'm pleased that we kept him this offseason, he's been quite valuable.

Because he's a massive tryhard. He always has this slow, emphatic cadence every time he asks a question or has a talking segment, as if he's perpetually telling some Pulitzer-worthy narrative masterpiece. Hazel is exactly the same way. Most players see through that self-important ******** and it's always cringe-worthy when it happens.

What do you think of Stephen Brunt? I love the back stories he tells and narrates and think he's the best journalist around (I'll say in Canada, but obviously don't pay attention to much outside of Ontario).

Stephen Brunt is excellent. I was thinking of him while I wrote that post as one of the examples of a legitimately good journalist in Toronto.

 

Sportsnet has a lot of good people. For strictly Blue Jays content, Arden Zwelling is an excellent storyteller too. Anyone who regularly shows up in Sportsnet's "Big Reads" section is generally pretty good.

 

The Jays also have solid reporters in Davidi and BNS. It's just their consistent on-air talent that's complete ass.
