Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted April 1, 2021 Posted April 1, 2021 Report: Mets, Lindor agree to 10-year, $341M extension https://www.thescore.com/mlb/news/2144971 Discuss
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted April 1, 2021 Author Posted April 1, 2021 Good work from his agent. Yup, got an extra 16 million by realizing the Mets needed to re-sign him after trading for him. Otherwise they'd look crappy.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted April 1, 2021 Posted April 1, 2021 I don't know that I would do this in free agency, let alone give assets on top of that, but good for the Mets.
King Old-Timey Member Posted April 1, 2021 Posted April 1, 2021 This will look atrocious in a few years
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted April 1, 2021 Posted April 1, 2021 This contract should definitively end the contract crowdsourcing experiment.
Ray Verified Member Posted April 1, 2021 Posted April 1, 2021 Good for Lindor! On a side note, if that’s what it took to extend him, I’m ecstatic that we got Springer instead.
Hipfan Verified Member Posted April 1, 2021 Posted April 1, 2021 Report: Mets, Lindor agree to 10-year, $341M extension https://www.thescore.com/mlb/news/2144971 Discuss So he's owed about $363M over the next 11 years, through his age 37 year? Seems about right; the length isn't too long (at least the Mets aren't paying for his age 40 season). While I thought he'd be a good pickup for the Jays, I think the acquisition cost was a bit high, knowing what Lindor would want, and obviously received, for his extension. Good for him, hope he plays well for a really long time. From a Jays perspective, probably best not to lock into a contract like this when Bo and hopefully Vlad will get ones like that too. In context, the Springer contract looks good in comparison. Obviously totally different player, but a good fit for the team, both player wise and contractually.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted April 1, 2021 Posted April 1, 2021 It will be fascinating to see how this plays out. Lindor is such a lovable player - I hope he earns this Contract and becomes a legend in the Mets organization. I wish my man David Wright was still there playing next to him.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted April 1, 2021 Posted April 1, 2021 Kinda sets the market for Seager, Story, Correa after this season. I know Semien is not in the same tier as Lindor, but damn, what a good deal that is.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted April 1, 2021 Posted April 1, 2021 This will look atrocious in a few years First 5 years should be fine. Even if he's a zero win player in 5 years Cohen will probably spend 300 mil on payroll so they still have close to 270 to work with, which will be way more than almost all the teams in the league. We need the Mets to pile up several bad contracts..lol.

I know Semien is not in the same tier as Lindor, but damn, what a good deal that is. I'd be surprised if any of them got 300 Million. Seager I think has a monster year but even then I can't see him breaking 300. I'll say Seager gets 10/270, Correa 8/190 and Story 7/165.

I'll say Seager gets 10/270, Correa 8/190 and Story 7/165. My guess is Story gets more than that if he has another good season, albeit probably not that much more. There is an element of paying a premium for star power to these Lindor/Tatis contracts that the Story and Correa contracts just aren't going to have (Correa may not simply due to his injury history). I'd be a little surprised if Story gets more than $200M, unless a team like the Mariners/Tigers gets desperate to take the next step in their rebuilds (entirely possible).
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted April 1, 2021 Posted April 1, 2021 Good work from his agent. Same guy who messed up with Kimbrel and also signed the Albies contract

A lot riding on this year obv

I'll say Seager gets 10/270, Correa 8/190 and Story 7/165. That's not quite what I meant. Whatever teams thought they might get Seager or Story for before yesterday, it just went up. Also, Seager is projected to be better than Lindor this season. If not for his two injury plagued years, and concerns about his health going forward, he's the better player. If he is healthy this season, I would have no problem with 10/270. His skills will age better than Lindor.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted April 1, 2021 Posted April 1, 2021 Same guy who messed up with Kimbrel and also signed the Albies contract Lol damn. Is there a clause in this contract that Lindor has to give 50 million to Albies??
Laika Community Moderator Posted April 1, 2021 Posted April 1, 2021 I figured with the Mets willing to do 10/$325 there was no way a deal would not happen. Any indication that Lindor was not willing to accept 325 was posturing.

dineke Old-Timey Member Posted April 1, 2021 Posted April 1, 2021 Yeah that much money to someone who's not an elite hitter is scary
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted April 1, 2021 Posted April 1, 2021 It will be fascinating to see how this plays out. Lindor is such a lovable player I understand this, but consider Lindor got $341M/10 years between age 27 to 37 while Tatis jr's "statue contract" was $340/14 years between age 22 to 36 They're setting the bar really high for Lindor with plenty of margin for disappointment
glory Old-Timey Member Posted April 1, 2021 Posted April 1, 2021 Happy for Lindor getting his money but that's a contract that will not age well.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted April 1, 2021 Posted April 1, 2021 I understand this, but consider Lindor got $341M/10 years between age 28 to 38 while Tatis jr's "statue contract" was $340/14 years between age 22 to 36 They're setting the bar really high for Lindor with plenty of margin for disappointment And Tatis is almost certainly the better hitter by a large margin. He may be a long term elite bat which Lindor never is/was. Defensively???
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted April 1, 2021 Posted April 1, 2021 So apparently Lindor's contract includes deferrals which pays him until he's age 47 (yikes).
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted April 1, 2021 Posted April 1, 2021 So apparently Lindor's contract includes deferrals which pays him until he's age 47 (yikes). Makes it more palatable for the team. Value of money declines over time.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted April 1, 2021 Posted April 1, 2021 Makes it more palatable for the team. Value of money declines over time. I'm guessing the Mets found some money manager off of Reddit while Cohen was being trolled by the GME people. Just like they found Madoff and they figured they can invest their way out of Bobby Bonilla overpays.

Feels like he will still be a really good hitter and likely slides over to 3rd base. The injury history is why I think he gets a bit less.
