Joel Sherman: Yankees’ weaknesses exposed in Opening Day flop

The Yankees welcomed fans back to their Stadium with the familiar. A Bernie Williams ceremonial first pitch. The “Y-M-C-A” in the fifth inning. “God Bless America” after the top of the seventh.

For the home team, there also was this unfortunate familiarity: Gleyber Torres is a second baseman playing shortstop and the Yankees remain challenged to score when the ball does not clear a fence.

The optimism that greeted both Williams and Gerrit Cole delivering initial pitches in 2021 had faded nearly four hours later when what remained of the 10,856 spectators booed throughout the bottom of the 10th inning as Aaron Hicks, Giancarlo Stanton and Torres struck out to end a frustrating 3-2 loss to the Blue Jays.

Reddit maybe? The site has killed a lot of message boards which is sad because reddit is just an echochamber where every unpopular opinion is hidden at the bottom.

There are definitely worse fans in baseball, but there are no more entitled fans in baseball...

I don’t even really hate the Yankees as a team. I actually think they are quite likeable, and I’m a fan of the way Brian Cashman operates.

But Yankee fans are some of the scummiest on earth, and I’ll never not have a gigantic smile on my face every time we or any other team beat them.

Kluber is gonna come out throwing hot trash and get destroyed by the top of the order IMO. Good chance we take 2/3 from the Yankees

It was a Thursday afternoon game.

Generally, I think more and more people get their sports discussion kicks on Twitter these days. Not sure people really search out message boards that often anymore

I think you're right. But it's interesting that it worked out that way. Twitter is basically just shouting your thoughts into the ether. You rarely get anything resembling a productive conversation, which was already rare in the messaged board format.

Yeah, I guess that could be part of the reason. I booked the day off a few weeks ago. Baseball is more important than work.

I watched most of it in my office at work. Can't beat getting paid to watch opening day!

For me it was one of the new benefits of remote working!

Yeah - we're a retro option. I don't think 'kids' these days even consider a message board format. That's too bad. I credit almost all of my current knowledge about the game today to this board (in terms of how the game has changed over the past 10 years). It's an amazing resource.

I've been working remote for years now, it's definitely one of the benefits.

Its gonna suck when we have to go back. Hoping our company lets us work remotely more often even when things are back to “normal”

I imagine a lot of companies will have realized that there are major cost savings, and other benefits to having a remote workforce. Hopefully most of them will be able to get over the "If I'm not watching my employees like a hawk, they will be lazy!" mentality.

But then again... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IW3lhfVpLL4
