John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted March 14, 2022 Posted March 14, 2022 Is everyone happy with the pen as it stands now? The pen is mightier than last year, at least on paper.
InsideThePark Verified Member Posted March 14, 2022 Posted March 14, 2022 Is everyone happy with the pen as it stands now? Yes. I wouldn't say no to another arm, but pending how much money is left to spend there are a couple other ways I'd spend it first. Romano, Mayza, Cimber, Richards, Merryweather, Garcia is a pretty solid. Especially if Pearson gets some work out of the pen as well. You could upgrade on Borucki for the last spot, but it's not vital with the other guys we have in there. If a bunch of guys get injured and it goes to s*** again, oh well, I don't think that's a problem you solve by spending a lot of money on the pen itself. Just being a little more selective where you spend it.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted March 16, 2022 Posted March 16, 2022 C- Jansen 1B- Guerrero Jr. 2B- Biggio 3B- Chapman SS- Bichette LF- Gurriel Jr. CF- Springer RF- Hernandez DH- Kirk Bench: Grichuk Espinal McGuire Needs: - A LH bat that can DH part time (Rosario, Pederson?) - More outfield depth, particularly someone who can play CF. I think we're looking pretty good. Team defense has been improved and the offense is probably still the league's best.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted March 16, 2022 Author Posted March 16, 2022 Mmm yeah, that's that good s***.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted March 16, 2022 Posted March 16, 2022 Perfect world, we trade one of our catchers, Grichuk and maybe someone else to fill our remaining needs. A left handed 4th OF that can play CF when Springer is out and a top end bullpen arm are my top priorities. People keep mentioning Dickerson but forget his noodle arm out there.

You're not going to get an allstar to sign as a bench piece, so Dickerson is about where the team will likely end up (barring a trade, but at this point it seems weird to move pieces from the MLB team when it's pretty much set and is arguably the best offence in baseball as is).

Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted March 16, 2022 Posted March 16, 2022 So what's the endgame with Reese McGuire here? Try to sneak him through waivers again? He's on my opening day roster as things stand right now, with Kirk being the primary DH option.
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted March 16, 2022 Posted March 16, 2022 So what's the endgame with Reese McGuire here? Try to sneak him through waivers again? Depends how big the opening day roster is, there was talk about a larger early season roster due to the shortened spring training... They may try to sneak him through, or they may carry 3 catchers (one doing a lot of DHing...)

I can't find anywhere if rosters were confirmed to be expanded to start this season. I know that was a topic of discussion. It makes it a lot easier to carry 3 catcher in that scenario.

I thought 26 was just the default roster size now? Was that only a pandemic thing? Yep, default roster size is 26 now. https://www.marca.com/en/mlb/2022/03/07/62264aea22601d0c4e8b45cc.html

Amazing how many people were worried about the 14 wins 'lost' because of Ray and Semien, and ironically they are now projected to win more than last year. Team is pretty much where it ended last year, except now have multiple years of control over all the key players.

He'd fill in for Semien at 2B nicely. I wonder if it was a combo of both injuries and the move to 3B that threw him off.

He was wincing in pain on throws to first base early in the season and never got back to his normal self. Just one year ago, many were saying he was the best of the legacy trio.

saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted March 17, 2022 Posted March 17, 2022 We just need to replace Dickerson from last years roster that ended the season. Conforto is the man for me. Decent shot at a bounce back. Grichuk will be super pouty when he's signed but with injuries and lefties he'll still get 350+ ABs.

Also, given what Schwarber just got paid, I don't think he's in the price range we're looking at.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted March 17, 2022 Posted March 17, 2022 Conforto wouldn’t be 4th of, he’d be one of 4 regulars. Gurriel is at 1st when vlad is resting or DH, Téo and George will get plenty of DH days. Conforto would effectively get starter reps.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted March 17, 2022 Posted March 17, 2022 And that’s assuming no injuries
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted March 17, 2022 Posted March 17, 2022 Of course rather unlikely for lots of reasons including payroll at 162m
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted March 17, 2022 Posted March 17, 2022 Of course rather unlikely for lots of reasons including payroll at 162m Given some of the rumours and what's transpired my Conforto to Jays is based on Ownership's willingness to Boldly go where they have not gone before. It would seem our payroll parameters are the highest they've ever been. injuries will happen. Conforto would get plenty of ABs.
