Bird is having a pretty great spring so far. 1.261 OPS, in a short sample size obviously, but he's having good AB's and hitting the ball hard.

Maybe it's because I've always kinda liked him, but I would bring him up as the 28th man on the roster and see if we can try and capture lightning in a bottle. If the alternative is having a guy like Josh Palacios or Mallex Smith, I'd rather roll with Bird honestly. Would be quite happy if we broke camp with the following roster (assuming no one else is added):

Infielder(s)

1. Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

2. Bo Bichette

3. Santiago Espinal

4. Cavan Biggio

5. Matt Chapman

6. Greg Bird

Catcher(s)

7. Danny Jansen

8. Alejandro Kirk

9. Reese McGuire

Outfielder(s)

10. George Springer

11. Lourdes Gurriel Jr.

12. Teoscar Hernandez

13. Randal Grichuk

Starting Pitcher(s)

14. Jose Berrios

15. Kevin Gausman

16. Alek Manoah

17. Hyun Jin Ryu

18. Yusei Kikuchi

Bullpen/Rotation depth

19. Jordan Romano

20. Tim Mayza

21. Adam Cimber

22. Trevor Richards

23. Yimi Garcia

24. Julian Merryweather

25. Ryan Borucki

26. David Phelps

27. Nate Pearson

28. Ross Stripling

I’d probably swap one of the Bullpen arms for Mallex Smith or Pelacios. Probably Smith, another backup CF would be good + he can pinch run.

Palacios is on the 40 man, Smith isn't. Given that, I'd suspect Palacios would be the one coming north. I've been thinking of the past few days that he might be the lefty bench bat they wind up with... The last season where he had any real playing time (2019) he had a 134 wRC+ in AA as a 23 year old, the team obviously likes him since they've kept him on the 40 man for a while now, he's got a bit of speed (15 SBs in 2019) and he can play all three OF positions.

He's not having a very strong spring so far (at least from what I've seen), but I feel like there might be something there; at least enough to perhaps be a 4th/5th OH, LHB type.

I like it as well. Mallex/Josh p won’t have any impact in a month on the bench. Or at least not as much potentially as the extra arm as pitchers are gonna need to be building up stamina. Allows you to pull them with more ease as you have weapons behind them. Also gives a look at Pearson, merryweather, borucki, and Phelps/or Vasquez. 4 guys for 2 spots barring injuries.

I do think there's something to be said for having a bench guy with significant speed for those tight late inning games were a stolen base could be warranted or being able to score from 2B on a hard hit single to the OF. Has to be able to do more than just run though. Ya...I'm lookin' at you, Billy Hamilton.

This is kind of interesting (?). Blue Jays just added 19-year-old Angel Del Rosario to the 40-man roster. He had a .639 OPS in Rookie-League last year. Right-handed bat.

Can't for the life of my really understand that transaction.

My first shot at rosterbation for 2022!

That looks wonderful, I'd just have a high OBP guy like Biggio in the 6 spot, to set the table for the next set of hitters. Borucki's likely on a short leash, but I hope he bounces back. Damn, what a team!!!

Yeah, Borucki and Vasquez (he has one option remaining) are the two that I'm cutting when they drop to the 26 man roster, assuming neither of them just tears it up between now and then.

Barring an injury between now and then…this is likely the exact 28 guys that will be coming north for April. Can’t argue with it at all.

I think David Phelps gets one of the spots over Merryweather or Vasquez, both of whom have options.

Good point, Julian doesn't seem right so far, lots of Dingers again.

Also possible. Still 2 open spots on the 40 man roster, 1 of which would be filled by Bird in the above scenario.

I actually did replace Vasquez with Phelps on my list but I made some formatting mistakes and hit the undo button a few times, must have accidentally undid that one and didn't notice.

I'm not attached to Vasquez at all and would much prefer Phelps get a shot to see what he can do when healthy. He could be a potential difference-maker.

Who gets McGuire's roster spot?

I vote for Nathan Lukes.

I wouldn't be surprised to see an outside addition join Bird, Tapia, and Espinal on the bench. My best guess from the existing 40 man is Zack Collins himself.

Yup.

So our bench is:

Espinal

Tapia

Collins (probably)

There aren't many internal options to fill the final bench spot, but a bunch of guys are about to become available before opening day. What kind of player should we be looking for?

left handed hitting IF/CF

That's what I've been calling for. Someone who plays from the 7th inning on (in the outfield) and covers 2b-3b as well. Espinal isn't enough as infield support.
