Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2021 Posted August 27, 2021 Stats say he's a plus plus fielder. Fangraphs has him ranked 21st for Defensive Runs Saved for all OFers. While having less innings played than a lot of the people ahead of him. https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=of&stats=fld&lg=all&qual=10&type=1&season=2021&month=0&season1=2021&ind=0&team=0&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&startdate=2021-01-01&enddate=2021-12-31&sort=13,d He's just filler until Springer's back, I guess Palacios goes down now, and he'll be DFA'd when George comes back.

Hope this isn't news that Springer is going to be out longer than expected. A lot were expecting for Springer to play today.

max silver Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2021 Posted August 27, 2021 Should we give the hitting coach credit for Semien or just chalk that up to 2020 being an outlier season? I understand your point and I'm sure Walker does do good work since you never hear a bad word about him. I'm just saying why don't we hear anything about him when our bullpen has been trash the entire year or when the likes of Anderson/Roark/Garcia s*** the bed. Other than Manoah/Romano, who is the last Jays pitcher that we truly developed from the bottom to the top during Shapiro's tenure? Just playing devil's advocate here. Anderson, Roark and and Garcia were all terrible washed up pitchers by the time they pitched with the Jays. You can attempt to polish a turd but in the end up you are left with is a shiny turd. Matz is another recent success story as he has turned around his career nicely under the tutelage of Walker. You can't blame Walker for all of Yates, Merryweather and Phelps being hurt and missing most if not all of the season. Chatwood was absolutely dealing before the sticky stuff crackdown. Romano and Mayza have both been developed into great late inning pitchers under Walker. Most of the failed bullpen guys have been waiver wire retreads, not sure if the pitching coach is to blame when guys who failed under other pitching coaches and get passed around through waivers ended up failing again as Blue Jays.
jonboy71 Verified Member Posted August 28, 2021 Posted August 28, 2021 Any Jays and RUSH fans making the trek to Detroit this weekend? If so, if anyone is willing to grab some of that new RUSH beer and bring me a few cans, that would be awesome! Beer only available in Canada. I'll be driving up from Kentucky for the Sat and Sun game. And yes, I'm a Jays fan!
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted August 29, 2021 Posted August 29, 2021 Merryweather and Pearson both pitched for the Bisons tonight. Merryweather - 0.2 IP / 2 hits / 1 earned run / 1 walk / 2 Ks // Can't be good that they yanked after 2 outs I don't think, probably tweaked something knowing him. s***** outing anyways though just looking at the box score. Maybe some bloops and/or a squeezing ump? I dunno Pearson - 1.0 IP / 2 hits / 1 earned run / 0 walks 2 Ks Dolis also pitched and took the L, giving up 1 walk, 1 run, 1 hit and 1 K The bullpen sucks ass down there too. With that line up of relievers you'd think it'd be endless 0's going up
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted August 29, 2021 Posted August 29, 2021 Martinez hopefully heating up. Went 3 for 5 last night with a double and 2 for 4 so far tonight with another double. 4 game hit streak / 7 for 17 with 1 HR, 2 2B, 1 BB

Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted August 29, 2021 Posted August 29, 2021 ya no Yeah most of that info is pretty BS or overblown. People do it for the look, and “the look” comes from the fact that it was originally done for fighting dogs and hunting dogs. 99% of these dogs are just chilling in the house all day and it’s completely unnecessary.

bones10 Old-Timey Member Posted August 30, 2021 Posted August 30, 2021 Anyone else feel like this team could actually end up doing some damage in the playoffs if they could just get in. Ray, Berrios and Manoah/Ryu is a pretty solid starting rotation, and the offense is definitely much better than what they're showing now, especially with (if?) Springer back. The pen is a problem obviously, with Romano and Mayza being the only very reliable ones at the moment, would have to hope for great returns from Merryweather and Pearson.

Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted August 30, 2021 Posted August 30, 2021 This is a big week for the Jays playoff hopes. We're playing the Orioles for 3 games and then the A's Meanwhile, Boston plays 7 of their next 10 against the Rays. Also, the Mariners play 6 of 9 against Houston, although they also play 6 of 12 vs Arizona, so.... Anyway, this would be a great time for the bats to break out and fuel a 8-10 game win streak.

My nerves won't be able to handle the Jays making the playoffs. Between expecting a bone-headed infield throwing error, a head-shaking batting substitution, a relief pitcher implosion or an insanely bad route by one of the corner outfielders I think my head would explode.

They definitely could do a lot of damage. But it does sort of look like a season's worth of self-owning themselves is going to keep them from that opportunity.

It's possible, it's just not likely. So much would have to go right for the Jays to make the playoffs that it's just not a likely outcome. It's not even about the Jays possibly shooting themselves in the foot in a game, it's the fact that 3 or 4 more teams would all have to go .500 or worse while the Jays win 2 out of every 3 for the rest of the season. Could the Jays win 2 out of 3 the rest of the way? Sure, but will 4 solid teams suddenly all go .500 or worse a the same time? Nope.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted August 30, 2021 Posted August 30, 2021 5.5 games back with 3 teams to pass and 33 games to go is a huge long shot. The one positive is that over 50% of their remaining games are against Baltimore and Minnesota, but this team just laid an egg and went 5-9 in a stretch against LAA, Seattle, Washington, and Detroit this past month. Can't assume anything. They'd have go something like 14-3 against BAL/MIN the rest of the way and then 8-8 against everyone else. That would get them to 90 wins, and even then, there's no guarantee that the other teams (Boston/Oakland specifically) won't surpass that total anyway. As conflicted as I am with this team right now (wanting them to win but also not against a collapse so Buntoyo is gone), would be nice to at least have meaningful games in late September.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted August 30, 2021 Posted August 30, 2021 Well the Mariners almost certainly will. How so? Theyre 1 game better than the jays and have virtually the same scenario, just with 1 less team to catch. yes, I would agree the Mariner's making it is more likely than the Jays making it simply because they're already ahead, but either team making it is unlikely.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 30, 2021 Posted August 30, 2021 Springer is back! Blue Jays activated OF George Springer from the 10-day injured list. Manager Charlie Montoyo said he'd leave it up to Springer whether or not he'd return Monday after running the bases again pregame, and evidently the outfielder is feeling up to the task. Springer is in the designated hitter spot and leading off against the Orioles and it wouldn't be a surprise if he remains a DH for a while to ease back into things.
