I don't know, if I was him I'd be wondering why Valera is on it instead of him.

Yeah, Smith must not be seen as a utility guy by the org, although a guy going from 3B to 2B isn/t that crazy, especially when he's as athletic as Smith appears to be.

 

The only way I can see Valera getting less starts is if the FO DFA him and take him away from Montoyo like they did with Panik.

One more component is that they might want/prefer Smith to play every single day right now if they still see him as squarely within his developmental phase.

He probably would, but there'd still be a learning curve. SS and 3B is more comparable than 2B is to either. I don't think it'd be good to call up a prospect for the first time and subject him to a new position at the same time he's trying to hit MLB pitching. This sounds like a recipe for disaster, we've seen many top ranked players struggle this year to hit after their call-up. If he's going to learn 2B I'd rather it be down in the minors where he's already flourishing or next year in spring training.

There's no more waiver trade deadline (Aug 31), right? Otherwise it would make sense to be holding him as a chip for that. Kinda feel bad for him, but he'll get his shot.

Sure, I can see there being an adjustment on some of the finer details of the position, but I can't see that being a determining factor in Valera getting the call over Smith. If you believe in someone's glove at SS you have to imagine that the transition can be made on the fly. I also bet Semien would be the first to admit that many of his other qualities played up at 2B. It's so much easier to throw from 2B than it is in the hole.

Smith must be wondering what more he has to do to earn a call up. Watches Lopez come up from AA and in less than a month go straight to the bigs with lesser production.

 

Lopez is on the 40 man roster, Smith isn't. So, Smith can lobby the MLB to increase the size of the 40 man roster, or he can bust up an infielder's knee so they wind up on the 60 day IL, but outside of that, he can't do anything.

2B is absolutely easier than SS but Semien is a gold glove calibre SS who had all offseason and Spring Training to prepare for a new position.
