I don't know, if I was him I'd be wondering why Valera is on it instead of him.

Because Valera plays 2B and Smith doesn't? Hopefully we see any Valera starts replaced with Lopez anyway.

Yeah, Smith must not be seen as a utility guy by the org, although a guy going from 3B to 2B isn/t that crazy, especially when he's as athletic as Smith appears to be.

The only way I can see Valera getting less starts is if the FO DFA him and take him away from Montoyo like they did with Panik.

Yeah it is when the player you are bringing in as not expected to play every day.

One more component is that they might want/prefer Smith to play every single day right now if they still see him as squarely within his developmental phase.

That is a fair point.

They probably also wanted someone who could play 2B since that's where Valera has played half the time since getting called up.

Smith is said to be a competent or better glove at SS so I imagine he would be plus at 2B.

He probably would, but there'd still be a learning curve. SS and 3B is more comparable than 2B is to either. I don't think it'd be good to call up a prospect for the first time and subject him to a new position at the same time he's trying to hit MLB pitching. This sounds like a recipe for disaster, we've seen many top ranked players struggle this year to hit after their call-up. If he's going to learn 2B I'd rather it be down in the minors where he's already flourishing or next year in spring training.

There's no more waiver trade deadline (Aug 31), right? Otherwise it would make sense to be holding him as a chip for that. Kinda feel bad for him, but he'll get his shot.

Respectfully, I've never heard of a SS having a tough time adjusting to 2B.

But there is still an adjustment period. For some players it would be tougher than others. Quote from Semien below. Sure doesn't sound like it was an instantiate switch.

"The angle off the bat, from a righty, there's a lot more balls that slice away from you," Semien explained Monday from the club's Spring Training complex in Dunedin, Fla. "The double-play turn and double-play feed are the biggest thing for me that I will work on every day. It felt pretty natural today. I've been working on that in the offseason and now we're able to get on the field every day and do it."

Sure, I can see there being an adjustment on some of the finer details of the position, but I can't see that being a determining factor in Valera getting the call over Smith. If you believe in someone's glove at SS you have to imagine that the transition can be made on the fly. I also bet Semien would be the first to admit that many of his other qualities played up at 2B. It's so much easier to throw from 2B than it is in the hole.

hey bros its me again back with more contract offerings as per my previous lambasting from the proposed extension for Nate Pearson lmao.

Teoscar Hernandez - 2022 arb eligible, 2024 free agent. 28 years of age.

$63M for 6 years. $10.5M AAV.

1) If you're Shatkins, would you offer?

2) If you're Teoscar, would you accept?

Wow.

Smith must be wondering what more he has to do to earn a call up. Watches Lopez come up from AA and in less than a month go straight to the bigs with lesser production.

Lopez is on the 40 man roster, Smith isn't. So, Smith can lobby the MLB to increase the size of the 40 man roster, or he can bust up an infielder's knee so they wind up on the 60 day IL, but outside of that, he can't do anything.

That offer would be a slap in the face to Teo. He'll get at least Ozuna money, possibly more if he stays consistent.

Time for anything close to that was during last season. His last 600 PAs = 4+ WAR player now.

Lots of people were dumping him for a hypothetical 2nd rate SP since last year while keeping the core intact with Biggio and Jansen lol. Teo’s a stud

Basically, Springer won't play another regular season game.

2B is absolutely easier than SS but Semien is a gold glove calibre SS who had all offseason and Spring Training to prepare for a new position.

A-Rod was throwing balls into the parking lot when he first moved off of SS.

Sucks but obviously the right move. Don’t like hearing that its a knee issue now, ankle would have been better IMO. Hopefully he’s back by September but Charlie’s quote has me worried

This is feeling Tulo like...

Nah. If he spends more than 40 games on the DL next year then we can start worrying about the contract becoming Tulo-esque

Assuming he doesn't need surgery and there are no setbacks, I could see him returning with a week or two left in the season. He'll probably have to get the rehab at-bats in the majors though.

Only if the Jays are still in it. If not, Springer likely starts getting ready for 2022.
