glory Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2021 Posted August 15, 2021 Our 40 man cannot handle much more abuse... And I don't get the reason it would be PR, but I don't know anything about Smith, other than he used to be good, but sucks now. With Springer hurt, Davis on the Yankees, and Palacios MIA due to injury (unless he's come back recently), they could use the OF depth. Not that it matters though, since Buntoyo getting to play Grichuk everyday again without having to juggle the lineup is like Christmas for him.

bones10 Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2021 Posted August 16, 2021 Anyone take a peak at Teoscars BABIP, .381, Wow! Definitely a solid hitter but that average has some significant regression coming.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2021 Posted August 16, 2021 Anyone take a peak at Teoscars BABIP, .381, Wow! Definitely a solid hitter but that average has some significant regression coming. Teoscar has been on a heater in August which has inflated the BABIP numbers a fair bit, but his lowest BABIP month of the season is July where he still posted a .321 BABIP. His xWOBA and WOBA are within a few points of each other, so ultimately the high BABIP is of little concern when evaluating his offensive performance. All of Teoscar's batted ball metrics are within the upper 80-low 90 percentile rating, so his offensive stats are well earned.

AMS528 Verified Member Posted August 16, 2021 Posted August 16, 2021 That's at least a 60 grade bat flip. He hit for a sterling .050 in college though so I'm skeptical we'll ever see it in action.

He made a joke with Hazel, saying he had gap to gap power in high-school, but in college he couldn't hit water falling out of a boat, lol.

Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted August 17, 2021 Posted August 17, 2021 That Berrios trade is looking pretty bad now. ? Did something happen, just looked up Martin and Richardson and both have similar stats with their new teams. Berrios through 3 starts, 2 good, 1 bad, has exactly the same production he did before... Jays have gained 1 game on Oakland and 3 or 4 on Boston... So how on earth does the trade look bad.?? If things progressed at the same rate they have since the trade was made Jays would get a wild card.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted August 17, 2021 Posted August 17, 2021 That Berrios trade is looking pretty bad now. How is it looking any worse than it did initially? I originally wasn't a huge fan as I thought that Martin and Woods Richardson were close to untouchables, but post trade reflecting has me realizing that each guy given up had some serious warts emerging. I think Martin can still turn into a great player if he can tap into his power professionally, but there is no guarantee here. Woods Richardson was still striking out a ton of batters, so his ceiling remains very high. Like Martin there are question marks whether he will be able to reach that ceiling or not. Berrios was terrific in his first two starts with the team, and looks to be fitting in nicely so far as we can tell from the tv broadcasts. There is a very good chance the club will be able to extend him before his contract expires, and he's likely the clubs number 2 starter at worst heading into next season.

No one on this forum that has any credibility makes claims after a 3 game sample size. Delete yourself. Settle your bad s*** down. We have Berrios for all of next season. He has made 3 starts...

43211234 Verified Member Posted August 17, 2021 Posted August 17, 2021 This seems surprising. Springer must need a few days and Lopez may get some outfield reps. I guess he's on the 40-man and Kevin Smith isn't. Maybe not so surprising afterall.
Laika Community Moderator Posted August 17, 2021 Posted August 17, 2021 Cool. Very interested in seeing his exit velos and stuff. Hope he plays a bit

Or this points to Bo being hurt more then the team has let on... or its a combination of having a temporary backup for both
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted August 17, 2021 Posted August 17, 2021 Wow. Smith must be wondering what more he has to do to earn a call up. Watches Lopez come up from AA and in less than a month go straight to the bigs with lesser production.
Scion Verified Member Posted August 17, 2021 Posted August 17, 2021 I'm probably overthinking this, but apart of me wonders if maybe the Jays aren't as high on Smith as the numbers would suggest they are. I know Espinal is rolling, but I don't really understand the wisdom in not giving Smith a shot with Biggio down and now Lopez is being promoted over him.

Smith just turned 25 a month and a half ago. It's his first crack at AAA, he has a .950 OPS and a 147 wRC+ He's got 19 HR's / 16 SB's (19 tries) / 4 triples and apparently he also has a decent glove. Ah well, just keep raking Kevin. You'll get your shot. In the meantime hopefully Lopez does well with his call up. The more studs the Jays have the better.
Laika Community Moderator Posted August 17, 2021 Posted August 17, 2021 Otto Lopez is already on the 40 and has been playing some CF this year. Helps if Springer needs time off. That's it, guys. Not a knock on Kevin Smith. Lopez' skill set is also more likely to immediately translate into something that is more than a replacement level player. Smith might have major MLB growing pains given his MiLB history.

Is handedness really that big of a factor? It may be, I'm just thinking out loud.

One more component is that they might want/prefer Smith to play every single day right now if they still see him as squarely within his developmental phase.

They probably also wanted someone who could play 2B since that's where Valera has played half the time since getting called up.

Doesn't matter what level you've got him in, his numbers have stayed pretty steady with the bat. That kind of performance may speak to a pretty consistent approach. I was a bit skeptical at the start of the season, and I still am a bit given how he's always hit a lot of groundballs but it's worked for him so far. Playing at five positions this year makes him pretty much a plug and play guy as well. Sucks for Kevin Smith, but the reasoning is there.
