DigitalRock Old-Timey Member Posted May 29, 2021 Posted May 29, 2021 nice win, lets go on a winning streak.
Laika Community Moderator Posted May 29, 2021 Posted May 29, 2021 How is Statcast's Outs Above Average calculated and why does it rate Vladdy as such a poor defender? Any metric that calls Vlad a bad defender is dead to me. It's not that useful for 1B in this sample size. If you look at the leaderboard the range is only from +3 to -4 right now for qualified 1B and Vlad is -1. His percentile rank in OAA that shows on his statcast playercard (19th percentile) is misleading; he is literally one made play away from being a +1, probably, which would bump his percentile rank into 50%+. His success rate on plays is 71% and his expected success rate is 72%. Statcast OAA just looks at ball location, fielder starting location, and whether they made the play. How much the player gets a + or - on the play depends on the difficulty, i.e. how far they had to range to get to the ball. Booting a play with a 98% make probability is a big minus; making a play with a 5% make probability is a big plus. Range based metrics are iffy for first basemen anyway. That goes for all of them. OAA ignores Vlad's arm and ability to pick the ball. I actually don't think any public defensive metrics try to assign a value for a first baseman's ability to scoop the ball? Someone correct me if I'm wrong. It's a complicated thing to calculate and it probably needs a big sample size and some WOWY analysis with cohort infielders, kind of like figuring out catcher framing.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted May 29, 2021 Posted May 29, 2021 Alomar quite the horndog Yeah sounds like a major creep from that story... also this part is important: “MLB did not disclose any details about their investigation or what led Commissioner Rob Manfred to punish Alomar with the league’s most severe penalty. But according to multiple sources with knowledge of the investigation, the allegations in that case are far more serious than what is now being alleged by Verge.” Far more serious than the posted story... yeeesh.

Probably criminal, but appaently the victim does not want to press charges, as is common in these cases.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted May 29, 2021 Posted May 29, 2021 Jays game PPD. I hate rain delays! It’s not even raining. Fields probably not great and they don’t want to play in the cold and wind when it’s going to be nice tomorrow. Bullpen should be plenty rested after this week
JaysAllMighty Old-Timey Member Posted May 29, 2021 Posted May 29, 2021 7 innings good for us and our depleted bullpen.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted May 29, 2021 Posted May 29, 2021 7 innings good for us and our depleted bullpen. FIVE 7-inning games in a row. Could definitely do wonders for the bullpen.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted May 29, 2021 Posted May 29, 2021 I'm glad they got last night's game in!!!
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted May 29, 2021 Posted May 29, 2021 I'm glad they got last night's game in!!! Definitely. Also sucks for Cleveland, now they have to play 2 doubleheader days in a row
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted May 29, 2021 Posted May 29, 2021 Sorry, this 7 inning stuff is ******** for any team. Minor league s*** if you ask me. f*** you, Robbie! This has become something resembling Major League Baseball, but not actual MLB anymore. This man is an embarrassment to the sport. Funny thing is, MILB went back to 9 inning double headers this season
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted May 29, 2021 Posted May 29, 2021 Definitely. Also sucks for Cleveland, now they have to play 2 doubleheader days in a row We'll it sucks to be in Cleveland...

Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted May 30, 2021 Posted May 30, 2021 Ya, I'm not on the extend Ray train. Its great that his K/BB rate has improved so much but I don't understand how/why he gives up so many bombs. I haven't looked at the numbers but with the eye its seems like they are coming off all his pitches. Is a movement or location issue or both? He gets squared up a lot. Cue my occasional reminder that Josh Towers is third all-time in K/BB rate out of all qualified Jays pitchers.
M.E. Verified Member Posted May 30, 2021 Posted May 30, 2021 I assume the Jays are gonna break a record tomorrow by playing 5 straight 7 inning games
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted May 30, 2021 Posted May 30, 2021 Cue my occasional reminder that Josh Towers is third all-time in K/BB rate out of all qualified Jays pitchers. That's an abomination, of a sick.

Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted May 30, 2021 Posted May 30, 2021 I assume the Jays are gonna break a record tomorrow by playing 5 straight 7 inning games And Manoah will be the first pitcher in Baseball history to have his first 2 starts in regulation 7 inning games.
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted May 30, 2021 Posted May 30, 2021 Alomar quite the horndog I thought this was a semi-joke.. and then I read the article. RIP.
Virgil_Hiltz Verified Member Posted May 30, 2021 Posted May 30, 2021 It’s the fact that doubleheaders are 7 innings, amongst other awful rule changes. if it means a few scheduled doubleheaders a season then it's a "thumps up from me.....way up" ! These could be beneficial to all teams if it gives the players and especially pitchers a cpl extra days off.
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted May 30, 2021 Posted May 30, 2021 And Manoah will be the first pitcher in Baseball history to have his first 2 starts in regulation 7 inning games. Nevermind, I assumed he was pitching today, but I guess not!
